After divorcing the woman he’d been with since he was seventeen, Nick Fuller is starting over. He owns the restaurant of his dreams and he’s determined to meet new people, find new passions, and experience life to its fullest. Easier said than done—that is until he meets his new neighbor, Bryce Tanner…
Bryce is all about a good time. He plans to show Nick how it’s done, help him meet a few women, and enjoy the gift of the single life he’s been given. But things don’t go as planned, and soon they realize they’d rather be together than with anyone else.
Neither man has ever wanted another guy, but there’s a connection between them from the start—a spark they can’t deny. They find themselves navigating an unfamiliar new world and dealing with unforeseen obstacles. Physical desire isn’t enough, and now Nick and Bryce are at a crossroads. They have to decide which way to go: the easy path they’ve always followed, or the one that's determined to trip them up at every turn.
Don’t forget to pop back on release day, the 28th July, when Riley will be visiting with a guest post and giveaway. In the meantime check out my pre release review for Crossroads. Another Riley winner…I loved it!!
Nick and Bryce are straight. Not bisexual...not bi curious ...not repressed. Nope. At the start of the book these two men are completely and utterly heterosexual. They've each had relationships with women that clearly define their inherent sexuality, but for different, reasons the relationships have ended, leaving them free agents. However, nothing is as cut and dried as it seems, as the two of them are also constrained by family expectations, which in a way is stopping them both moving forward with their lives the way they should.
Thirty year old Nicks marriage broke down because his wife cheated on him, but like all relationship failures there are deeper issues involved. The main factors that lead to his divorce centre mainly around his well meaning, but overly judgemental, slightly possessive mother, who could never accept that Jillian was ever good enough for her son, (a vice versa situation with his in laws), and also his ex's belief that she’d been neglected in favour of his career as a chef and time spent building up his new restaurant.
Having only ever been with Jill, Nick is still smarting from the split; not because he feels like he’s lost the love of his life, but because the nature of her betrayal, after being a couple since they were both seventeen, hurts. He's a kind, thoughtful more introspective character and the thought of playing the field and just jumping into meaningless sex doesn't interest him at all. When he finds love again, he wants it to really mean something. He wants a forever love ...never once thinking that when he does find it, it’ll be with another man!
In the more outgoing, effervescent, Bryce's case, his dilemma lies in the fact that his mother still thinks he's romantically involved with his best buddy since childhood…the extremely likable, fun loving Christi…when in fact their short spell as a 'couple' has been over for at least two months. Still BFF's in the true sense, they've realised that although they love each other; they're not in love; making much better friends than lovers.
But the fear of upsetting his mum, who has set her heart on this hopefully being the one relationship out of all her three sons, to provide her with the grand babies she's been longing for, has decided that lying by omission is his best bet until he can finally pluck up courage to confess. Then his new neighbour moves in and a close friendship forms that overtime, as their friendship deepens into something neither of them sees coming, has Bryce not only assessing his sexual inclinations, but also the part of his character that even now in his his early thirties, has never really managed to settle to anything permanently...so is this unpredicted change of circumstances finally what he's been looking for...or is it just another phase he'll end up rejecting?
Is it a situation that could happen in real life between a couple of dyed in the wool, hetero guys? I don't know, but I'd like to think it can if people are not closed off to the fact that sometimes when love hits you out of the blue, it doesn’t always follow the so called ‘rules’. But this is pure fiction so I'm happy to embrace the concept that two straight guys could meet and fall in love despite their preconceived roles in the general scheme of things.
Riley Hart has written a lovely, heart felt—but surprisingly not too angst ridden—'gay for each other' style story, between two great characters, who discover love out of the sort of soul bond connection that doesn't always come around that often in life. A rare affinity that for most people when they find it, usually results in a close, lasting friendship that endures for life. But for Nick and Bryce that initial platonic chemistry morphs into something much deeper and totally unanticipated.
In Riley’s hands it's a feasible, well thought out friends to lovers story that worked for me, because it didn’t rush into the realms of insta attraction or insta love the moment the MC's first met, paced well, they become pals first, spend time together doing the sort of things people do when they click as buddies, and only after enjoying each other's company over a decent length of time, start to recognise that more than just friendship is developing between them as their feelings slowly but surely intensify .
Of course there are emotional roadblocks to surmount as their relevant family problems impact on them in ways that has them both engaging in a touch of soul searching, but there's also camaraderie, fun and delicious sexy times when they discover the joys of gay sex; especially the 'magic button' that gives "orgasm fucking heaven."
The sex scenes are steamy and, as you can probably imagine, pretty darn hot but at the same time they also felt realistically portrayed, as neither of them have ever dabbled in those waters before. It's a matter of Google is your friend and practice makes perfect before they're fully confident in the bedroom, as in that side of the relationship there are still conflicts to overcome…but they get there and its certainly no hardship watching them try to get it right! Lol…
Once again Riley Hart left me satisfied and smiling as she worked her magic and created a truly enjoyable, feel good love story with a touch of drama that delivered on all levels. A vibrant cast of supporting characters, help make this the enjoyable read it is and I loved it! Add this to your collection ASAP!
