Synopsis

In the year of our Lord 1040, fourteen-year-old aspiring jester Tom is en route to Bath to begin his studies in the art of being a Fool, following in the footsteps of his father, and his father before him.

Along the way he meets Malcolm, a fire-haired boy with eyes green as forest glass. A Scotsman who's escaped from the ravages of the usurper Macbeth, Malcolm elects to join Tom at school. Though the journey to Bath is hazardous, it pales in comparison to what they face at the austere and vicious Fool School, where all is not as it seems. A court jester must aim to be the lowest rung on the ladder of life, and the headmaster will not abide pride.

As they journey through life's hardships together, Tom and Malcolm find they only have each other to depend upon.

Sally: There are moments of broad slapstick humour, sharply observed satire, puns and wordplay, and funny situations turned on their heads. It’s also horrific in its depiction of a simpler age where anything unusual was blamed on gods and devils, punishments could be immediate and vile, and medical treatment could be even worse. This is probably the most exhilarating book I've read this year.

Synposis

In a future where live sex shows abound to keep a jaded population entertained, dancer Bode Martin falls for the brilliant and unstable Kilroy Ballast, who molds Bode into the star attraction of his erotic circus, the Grand Ballast. Drugged beyond any real feeling, Bode trades freedom and his once considerable pride for an illusion of tenderness—until he inadvertently rescues a young man from a rival show, and together they flee to an eccentric town in the west where love still means something.

Valen’s not an easy man to know, and Bode shed his romantic notions under Kilroy’s brutal employ. Yet their growing bond becomes a strange and dangerous salvation as they attempt to overthrow the shadows of their pasts and wade together through a world of regret, uncertainty, beauty, and terror.

But Kilroy won't let Bode go so easily. Long ago, Bode was responsible for the loss of something Kilroy held dear, and he still owes Kilroy a debt. As the three men battle toward a tangled destiny, Bode must decide if his love for Valen is worth fighting for—or if he was and always will be a pawn in the story Kilroy Ballast will never stop telling.

WARNING: Contains violence and noncon. Not a genre romance.

Macky: This month was a difficult choice because I read some awesome books in June, and to be honest there were three in particular that stood out to me (for different reasons) but in the end I decided on The Grand Ballast because quite simply it blew me away. Leaving me in awe of its dark, shocking, complex, clever story. Not an easy read by any means but OMG! I'll never forget anything about it. Beautifully written despite its dark, sometimes tummy churning nightmarish content, it's JA's best up to now in my humble opinion and is well worth pushing your boundaries for. Just...amazing!

Synopsis

Wanking with a mate isn’t gay—as long as you keep your hands to yourself.

Jez Fielding and James MacKenzie—Big Mac to his mates—are in their second year at uni. After partying too hard last year, they make a pact to rein themselves in. While their housemates are out drinking every weekend, Jez and Mac stay in to save cash and focus on their studies.

When Jez suggests watching some porn together, he isn’t expecting Mac to agree to it. One thing leads to another, and soon their arrangement becomes hands-on rather than hands-off. But falling for your straight friend can only end badly, unless there’s a chance he might feel the same.

Debra: This gay for you story had a little bit of everything as college housemates Jez and Mac tentatively explore the joys of gay sex.  Their reactions to what they were doing felt honest and real and each step forward was hotter than the last.  As bisexual Jez realizes he is actually falling for his straight friend Mac, he has to decide whether it’s worth risking their friendship and Mac’s reputation to continue or if he should just end what they are doing before things go too far.  The story was sweet and smutty fun that grabbed me from page one and didn’t let go.

Fire & Ice (A Guns & Hoses Novel) by Brenda Cothern

Synopsis

Lukas Wolf has no desire to have a partner. He doesn't need any help, especially from some young graduate with no field experience, to catch a serial arsonist who is escalating in the county.
Austin Kinsley moved to Tampa Bay to reconnect with his cousin, Thomas Flame, and to apply for an arson investigator position with the county. Of course, getting his dream job is the easy part. Working with his new partner, Lukas Wolf, and finding what he needs to satisfy his craving for pain might be more difficult.

Liza: Lukas and Austin are amazing together - yet they spend so much time in the book, not really being sure who each other was. Yes, they work together, but they are not exactly happy in that capacity. But where they truly come together is in the Woodshed, a BDSM club.

These two men sparked when together, and it is not until...yep, okay I can't tell you that bit or I will be giving too much away. Suffice to say when these two men do finally get their act together, they explode in a shower of fireworks.  A solid love story and while I had a couple of tinnie tiny issues with a couple of things in the plot there is absolutely nothing there that fans of contemporary MM stories will find upsetting.

Love Is A Stranger (More Heat Than The Sun #1) by John Wiltshire

Mark’s Review

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

Loving a total stranger can be very hard work sometimes.
How do you love someone who exists entirely in the shadows? How do you love a man who describes himself as dead? How do you get that ghost to love you back? Ex-SAS soldier Ben Rider falls in love with his enigmatic married boss Sir Nikolas Mikkelsen, but Nikolas is living a lie. A lie so profound that when the shadows are lifted, Ben realises he's in love with a very dangerous stranger. Ben has to choose between Nikolas and safety, but sometimes danger comes in a very seductive package.

Mark: This book is packed full of man-on-man action in all categories. It just left me with an adrenaline filled rush and was gripping from start to finish. Ben and Nikolas, what can I say? Their relationship develops backwards as far as the romance stakes are concerned - huh? Then let me explain - lol! It’s a relationship that is first based on nothing but gratuitous, no-strings-attached, stress-relieving sex. However, Ben does start to fall for the conundrum that is Nikolas Mikkelsen. The man is as cool as cucumber, shows no emotion whatsoever and is almost completely impossible to read. The power play between the both of them was brilliantly done. Nikolas being the superior, definitely likes to keep Ben in his place. Not only at work but also in the sack, so I was also sensing the old sub-dom vibes here too in oodles. It is definitely not your average flowery, saccharine romance and ends on note which will only compel any reader to continue on to the next book. I know I will be.

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

Most things in life come easily to eighteen-year-old Jenner Parrish, who’s on track to inherit the family business, and is popular, well-liked and good looking. He has everything he could want, except when it comes to love, and sex. Closeted, lonely and desperate, he acquires an invitation to an event at a nearby private gay club, Manse. Feeling out of his element and for the first time quite shy, Jenner is unable to play the wallflower when he captures the attention of the suave, seductive owner of Manse, David Davenport. David is used to getting what he wants, and what he wants is gorgeous young Jenner, who begins to realize every fantasy and wild desire could be his for the taking, if only he dares to ask and obediently serve.

Note from the author: M/M BDSM Romance novella. It’s part of the Society of Masters and a prequel to Bound by Lies, though it can be read as a standalone story! It also introduces the characters David and Shea from my next novel release, Loving the Master, also coming very soon!

Monique: This is an excellent example of Lynn Kelling’s brilliant writing and I loved it! It’s a classy BDSM novella. A powerful, yet subtle seduction, with erotic undertones that create an air of sexual tension that literally had me tingling all over! I’m not kidding… I was tingling!

This novella is the prequel to the already published Bound by Lies, which was a five star read for me and gives us a glimpse at Jenner’s introduction into the lifestyle and the two people that were instrumental in guiding him: David and Shea. David and Shea’s story is the next book due for publication in this series… And I have to tell you, after reading this, I can’t wait!!! Because, there was a moment in this book when it finally hits Jenner what it is to be a true Dom, that actually made my eyes sting… it was so heartfelt. So honest. So beautiful. I love David and Shea already and I haven’t even read their story yet!

I urge you to read this book, so you too can get drawn into this fabulous series and the worlds in which they all connect.

Alan’s Hot Pick

Cronin’s Key II by N.R. Walker

Rating: 5 Stars

Alan’s Review

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

History isn’t always what it seems.
With the battle of Egypt behind them, Alec and Cronin are enjoying the thrill of new love. Though fate doesn’t wait long before throwing them back into the world of weird.

They know Alec’s blood is special, though its true purpose still eludes them. And given Alec’s inability to be changed into a vampire, Cronin is free to drink from him at will. But the ramifications of drinking such powerful blood starts a ripple effect.

With the help of Jorge, a disturbing vampire-child with the gift of foresight, Alec and Cronin face a new kind of war. This time their investigations lead them to the borders of China and Mongolia—but it’s not what lies in the pits beneath that worries Alec.

It’s the creator behind it all.

In the underground depths of China, amidst a war with the Terracotta Army, they will find out just what the Key is, and what Alec means to the vampire world.

Alan: N.R. Walker is one of the very best. At the top of her game and working in that rarefied air where the truly gifted and dedicated writers dwell. I first met her when I chanced across the Red Dirt Heart series which blew me away.

The premise of Cronin’s Key II, the souls of the characters, all of it, was as dramatic as it was gentle. There are two notable things I particularly loved about this book (among many). The first is the way Ms. Walker treats their growing love. Normally, even vampire “fated” relationships wane a bit, after a while, as human relationships do. They start out with intense love, and then level off to respect, admiration and affection. Not these two. Every day, they become closer; every day it gets harder for them to be apart for even a moment; every day their lust tries to consume them; and every day both their powers grow, as they can hear each other’s thoughts without speaking and feel each other’s proximity or distance without touching or seeing. They are actually becoming one. Alec is showing growing vampire skills, though he remains doggedly human. The love between these two characters grows so huge and so intense throughout this book that it virtually rises up from the page and into the reader’s heart. Stunning - and sexy as hell.

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

Liam Davis is a man without a past. That’s what he wants everyone to believe, anyway. Hell-bent on erasing any memories of his previous life, he knows that starting over is all he can do. Hiding who he is, where he’s from, why he’s running, and especially who he’s left behind, Liam has run away from everything he’s ever known. His plan works perfectly until one day when Parker Ryan threatens to expose his carefully concealed world.

Parker Ryan is a man without a future. Sure, he’s a partner in one of New York’s most prestigious law firms, but he’ll never be more than a failure in the eyes of his boss, his father. Rather than break away from his father’s standards, he finds himself mindlessly pursuing them, in turn sacrificing anything that would actually make him happy.

When Liam’s and Parker’s lives collide, the ugly truth about who they really are, and who they hope to become reveals itself when they least expect it. As both of their lives become wrecked beyond all belief, they’ll learn how to rely on each other in their journey to become Repaired.

Lisa: Repaired is the newest stand-alone M/M romance by Melissa Collins. I now have a few books by this author under my belt and I readily admit that she is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books are so heartfelt, passionate and real. This latest story is no exception. Both men in this tale are in desperate need of love, understanding and acceptance. Can they find their way to a life of happiness that seems so far out of reach?
This book is yet another example of why I love this author and her beautifully intricate romances. Ms. Collins never fails to capture my attention and my heart with her emotional, effortless and poignant writing style. I love how she took these two men from different worlds and showed us how even when our lives seem to be a mess and heading in a direction that you may never have expected, even when there are twists and turns you may not see coming, love can show us the way.
