Synopsis

Will Osborne couldn’t wait to put the roller coaster ride of his public education behind him. Having suffered bullying and harassment since grade school, he planned a senior year that would be simple and quiet before going away to college and starting fresh. But when a reform school transfer student struts into his first class, Will realizes that the thrill ride has only just begun.

Lennox McAvoy is an avalanche. He’s crude, flirtatious, and the most insufferable, beautiful person Will’s ever met. From his ankle monitor to his dull smile, Lennox appears irredeemable.
But when Will’s father falls seriously ill, Will discovers that there is more to Lennox than meets

Monique: I just love it when I read a book from a debut author and it’s really something to get excited about… and this is one of those books! Zane Riley effortlessly captured my heart with his characters and …the writing… it’s stunning. But not in a lyrical, flowery way. The words just flowed so smoothly over the page, enticing me in, so much so, that reading this felt like time just stopped; with heart-breaking moments of poignancy that just made me pause for thought. I was completely absorbed in the story of these two boys… and this isn’t a short book at 326 pages, but my kindle didn’t leave my hands for a minute.

When Teyth was but a child, a cruel prince took over his village, building a great granite tower to rule over the folk. Greedy and capricious, the man will be the bane of Teyth’s existence as an adult, but as a boy, Teyth is too busy escaping his stepfather to worry about his ruler.

Sold into apprenticeship to the local blacksmith, Teyth finds that what was meant as a punishment is actually his salvation. Cairsten, the smith, and Diarmuid, his adopted son, are kind, and the smithy is the prosperous heart of a thriving village. As Teyth grows in the craft of metalwork, he also grows in love for Diarmuid, the gentle, clever young man who introduces him to smithing.

Their prince wants Diarmuid too. As the tyrant inflicts loss upon loss on Teyth and Diarmuid, Teyth's passion for his craft twists into obsession. By the time Teyth resurfaces from his quest to create immortality, he’s nearly lost the love that makes being human worth the pain. Teyth was born to sculpt his emotion into metal, and Diarmuid was born to lead. Together, can they keep their village safe and sustain the love that will make them immortal?

Macky: I'm almost at a loss of how to put in words how jaw droppingly good a read this was! Throughout the tale, Amy Lane took me to places that touched me. Keeping me in an emotional maelstrom that at times gently moved me but when it reached its epicentre broke my heart as I watched the two men who had endearingly made me fall in in love with everything about them suffer humiliation, physical harm and degradation, overwhelming grief and the near loss of a passionate, soul bonded love that luckily managed to transcend the trials thrown at them. But as heartrending as this was, interwoven among the darkness was always the underlying sense of light, love, hope and redemption which in itself was poignant and tender. . A book that made me feel...made me live every emotional onslaught these men suffered! Bravo Amy Lane and thank you for giving me an unputdownable, gold star read I won't forget. It's an old chestnut but this story blew me away!

Synopsis

Determined to help the war effort, Frankie Norris joins the US Air Force in 1943. Braving intimidating drill sergeants and unending marches, Frankie struggles to hide his secret—he’s queer. But having passed basic training, he’s not going to risk an undesirable discharge or any of his fellow recruits finding out. Then he receives word that he’s been granted a position flying the plane he loves, the P-51 Mustang.

But as Frankie finds his wings in the sky, feelings of isolation may keep him grounded. Slowly making friends among his squadron, Frankie realizes he may not be as alone or as abnormal as he thinks. Other queer men have formed a community in the Armed Forces to offer support. Then Frankie meets his crew chief, Jim Morrow. Initially antagonistic, they slowly become friends and a mutual attraction develops as they join the Eighth Air Force in Britain. Confessing their feelings, snatching what time they can together, and wary of discovery, Frankie and Jim are there for each other through dangerous missions and the loss of friends. It’s a long war with enemies on both sides. All they can hope for is to survive long enough for a chance at something more.

Mark: My May Hotpick I read and reviewed with Sally together. We both love our historical M/M and what a gem this one turned out to be. A new to us author, we took the chance and was squeeing with delight over the discovery. Frankie has to hide his true identity from everyone as this would only lead to a whole heap of trouble. I loved the way that R.A. Thorn portrays this, the crush he has on his first best friend he makes but can’t tell anyone the way he feels. He almost gives up on the fact that he will be able to find what he craves and therefore has to live a clandestine life. However, there are also others like himself and through coded language finds the friends he needs to make his existence in the USAF more bearable. A superb M/M story set in WWII and portrays the love, anguish and fears of the men and women who did so many brave things without considering themselves as courageous at all. But just doing what needed to be done and at a time when finding love was even more important I guess then it ever was or has been.

Claiming His Cub (RCMP: Pride Book 1) by Kayleigh Malcolm

Liza’s Review

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

Dary, an officer with the Paranormal Research Intelligence Discipline and Education (PRIDE) department of the RCMP, has little time to pursue his personal interests outside of his job. As a dominent bear shapeshifter in his prime, and a taste for slim, trim boy-toys, his preference has brought him to a crossroad—his desire to find a partner to share his life with is overcast by immature males who don’t share his interests When he learns about the 1Night Stand service and Madame Eve’s incredible track record for successful matches, he utilizes a rare weekend away from his job to indulge in some much-needed fantasy.
Rhudaii is a unique man in every imaginable way. With an unusually youthful appearance and a little known inherent bombshell of his own, he longs for a deeper connection with a man than just instant gratification. Being an avid romance junkie, Rhoo plans a getaway to a book convention in Ottawa, except surrounded by hundreds of women isn’t what he’s looking for. Instead, he arranges a date through the 1Night Stand service.
When the men meet sparks fly and the sexual tension soars. Each of them has a secret that could make or break any potential long-term relationship. But, what if they have more in common than they thought?

Liza: Although this is book one in a new shifter series, it is also a One Night Stand story and I totally adore those books.  This one features a bear of a man, Dary, who works for PRIDE.  Most of his life is taken up with his work, but that doesn't mean he isn't looking for love.  So he contacts Madame Eve and arranged a weekend getaway.  His date - a man named Rhudaii, commonly known as Rhoo.

Rhoo is totally delightful and Dary ticks all of his boxes in a prospective long term lover. But as with any blind date, Rhoo has secrets and so does Dary - that was a twist I didn't see coming. Dary was a little harder to read, but then that was the nature of the man - their partnership worked and it was true credit to the author that I missed them when I put the book down, finished.  Definitely in my favorite pile for a re-read in the near future.

Delivered Fast (Portland Heat #3) by Annabeth Albert

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

Portland, Oregon, aka Hotlandia, where the coffee shops, restaurants, and bakeries are ready to serve everything piping hot, fresh, and ready to go—like the hard-working, hard-bodied men behind the counters—with no reservations…

Sure, Chris O’Neal has problems. His restaurant is still co-owned by his ex. His flannel-and-tattoos style is making him accidentally trendy. He can’t remember the last time he went out and had fun. But he’s not lonely, he’s driven. And the hot bakery delivery boy is not his problem, no matter how sweet his buns.

Chris is old enough to know Lance Degrassi’s sculpted good looks and clever double entendres spell nothing but trouble. Lance is still in college—he should be hitting the clubs and the books, chasing guys his own age, not pursuing some gruff motorcycle-riding workaholic. Especially when he’ll be leaving for grad school in a few months. But Lance keeps hanging around, lending a hand, charming Chris to distraction. Maybe some steaming hot no-strings indulgence won’t hurt.
Then again, maybe it will…

Lisa: Delivered Fast by Annabeth Albert is the third book in her Portland Heat series. I am a huge fan of this author with her fun and heart-warming books that leave you clenching your heart and happily sighing. This book was no exception. From the first page I was hooked and wanted to see just how things would play out between the surly restaurateur and the sexy bakery delivery guy with a personality and bubbly butt that were both hard to ignore. This turned out to be my favorite book in the series!

Alan’s Hot Pick

Beneath The Stain by Amy Lane

Rating: 5 Stars

Alan’s Review

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

In a town as small as Tyson, CA, everybody knew the four brothers with the four different fathers-- and their penchant for making good music when they weren't getting into trouble. For Mackey Sanders, playing in Outbreak Monkey with his brothers and their friends—especially Grant Adams--made Tyson bearable. But Grant has plans for getting Mackey and the Sanders boys out of Tyson, even if that means staying behind.

Between the heartbreak of leaving Grant and the terrifying, glamorous life of rock stardom, Mackey is adrift and sinking fast. When he's hit rock bottom, Trav Ford shows up, courtesy of their record company and a producer who wants to see what Mackey can do if he doesn't flame out first. But cleaning up his act means coming clean about Grant, and that's not easy to do or say. Mackey might make it with Trav's help--but Trav's not sure he's going to survive falling in love with Mackey.

Mackey James Sanders comes with a whole lot of messy, painful baggage, and law-and-order Trav doesn't do messy or painful. And just when Trav thinks they may have mastered every demon in Mackey's past, the biggest, baddest demon of all comes knocking.

Alan: My May Hotpick has to be Beneath the Stain as it almost defies description. I’ve been a sometime-fan of Ms. Lane’s work. Some of it I really like; some I could live without. But this book simply and plainly blew me away. In fact, when I realized I’d neglected to write a review when I’d first read the book, I took a quick look to refresh my memory, and broke my cardinal rule – I read it for a second time, cover to cover, word for word. I hate reruns, but this time I made an exception, and I’m oh so glad I did.

If you’re looking for a moving, exciting experience with some attractive, innocent, na├»ve, but truly talented musicians - if you’re looking for a great read, top-flight prose, perfectly believable dialogue and a unique and special reading experience - if you’re looking for a truly beautiful book, you must not miss Beneath the Stain.

A Pride of Poppies ~ Anthology

Rating: 4 Stars

Sally’s & Mark’s Review

Amazon Buy Link

GRbuttonhotpicks11834315

Synopsis

Ten authors – in thirteen stories – explore the experiences of GLBTQI people during World War I. In what ways were their lives the same as or different from those of other people?

A London pub, an English village, a shell-hole on the Front, the outskirts of Thai Nguyen city, a ship in heavy weather off Zeebrugge, a civilian internment camp … Loves and griefs that must remain unspoken, unexpected freedoms, the tensions between individuality and duty, and every now and then the relief of recognition. You’ll find both heartaches and joys in this astonishing range of thought-provoking stories.

Sally: I found this anthology deeply satisfying to read. I don't think one single story struck an off note and some really scaled the heights. While I enjoyed them all I particularly loved Hallowed Ground by Charlie Cochrane for the compassionate and matter of fact tone of it and At The Gate by Jay Lewis Taylor for the immediacy of the sense of place and the lovely laconic language. Very highly recommended.
