A Word from Posy Roberts
Thanks for hosting me today. I’m excited to be here to talk about my new book, Silver Scars.
Nearly everything I’ve written about Silver Scars so far is about Gil, the main character who shares his story with us. Part of that is because I’m afraid if I write about Keith, I’m going to give away a spoiler about him, and I hate spoilers. Here I go, attempting to tell you a little about Keith without ruining the story.
First impressions. They can be informative, but at times they say more about us than about the person we are measuring up and trying to get a read on. When Gil first meets Keith, he’s blown away by Keith’s looks. He seems perfect, impeccably dressed, handsome, and his only imperfection that Gil sees is his nose, which looks like it had been broken in the past. Of course, that makes Keith all the more handsome in Gil’s estimation, because he’s very self conscious about his own scars.
Keith’s first impressions of Gil are not shown in the book, but I’d like to think his mind went here.
When I finally crawl out from the knee well of my desk and stand with my long lost manuscript finally found, I’m grateful. It’s been a bad day all around because I should’ve asked for help moving into my new office, but then I look up and see the most handsome stranger standing next to Paul. Paul introduces him as Gil and I start talking, rambling really because I’m struck by Gil’s brown eyes. He looks vulnerable when I first look, but then he quickly throws up a shield, his eyes closing off.
I know that look and when I finally realize I’ve been shaking his hand for far longer than is appropriate, I see why. Or at least I think I do. Scars cover his shaved scalp as well as part of his forehead. Some look like they were cuts but a few have the appearance of burns.
He’s ashamed of them, fearful of stares and questions he might have to answer. That’s what his eyes tell me. I understand that. Plenty of both have come my way over recent years.
And then he’s gone, leaving me in my messy office before I’ve had a chance to get to know more about him. I want to know more about this man. I must. I’ll ask around and put the bug in everyone’s ear that if Gil is going to be at tonight’s happy hour, I want them to save the seat next to him for me.
What I hope readers learn from this tiny glimpse into Keith’s mind is that he is an empathetic man who understands suffering. He’s not afraid to put himself out there either. He’s also very in-tuned with himself and what he wants out of life. And moments after meeting Gil, he wants to get to know Gil even better.
Gil’s first impression let us know how insecure he in. Even Keith saw that. Thank goodness Keith is willing to go out on a limb and get that chair beside Gil reserved. But one thing these two men do pretty early on is balance each other out. There’s great give and take, and I think their initial meeting demonstrated that.
Have you met someone you initially didn’t like but then came to like them? How about the other way around? What changed it for you?

You need people to love you, especially when you shove them away.
A bomb destroyed high-powered lawyer Gil Lemieux’s seemingly perfect life, and PTSD has ruled every decision since the explosion that left him scarred inside and outside. Moving home with his mom is meant to be a temporary measure, just like proofreading for a medical editorial firm is meant to be a stopgap. But two years after taking on the wrong court case, he’s still living in fear.
Keith Kramer might be based 1,500 miles away from Gil, but their shared work brings them together—a chance meeting that’s life-changing. Gil is drawn to Keith’s good looks and intelligence, but it’s his innate understanding that Gil is more than the scars on his skin that is truly attractive. He’s everything Gil used to be and more. It blows Gil’s mind that his attraction might be returned.
Only doubt could widen the distance between them. Keith’s hopefulness, borne out of surviving some tough challenges of his own, isn’t enough to bridge the distance alone. Gil will need to believe he has as much to offer as Keith if they’re to build a life together.
