Kickass Moms in MM Romance

Both of us have been reading MM for years and when we started reading we remember thinking how many of the female characters we came across who were truly awful people. There were a plethora of storylines that revolved around gay men who were abandoned, disowned, and had really horrible families.

But we both knew from personal experience that this trope, while based in real experiences as well, left out the just-as-interesting female side characters who are supportive of the LGBTQI people in their life, or, at the very least, on a journey to become more supportive.

Wanting to explore these type of female characters is why Jo made Mac’s mom kickass in Beyond Duty and It’s why Sam gave Kerry his mom in An Immoveable Solitude. We both wanted to include a mom as a strong supportive character who the MC could look up to and rely on.

It was Mother’s Day in the US last Sunday, so we want to celebrate those kickass moms in MM romance that you love. Who is your favorite mom from MM? Leave a comment and one random commenter will win an ebook copy of Beyond Duty and another will win an ebook copy of An Immoveable Solitude!

Meet Sam McAuley

Sam sleeps little, reads a lot. Happiest in a foreign country. Twitchy when not mentally in motion. Send her a picture and a song and she's bound to write a story about it. And yes, that's an invitation.

Meet Jo Peterson

SJD Peterson, better known as Jo, hails from Michigan. Not the best place to live for someone who hates the cold and snow. When not reading or writing, Jo can be found close to the heater checking out NHL stats and watching the Red Wings kick a little butt. Can't cook, misses the clothes hamper nine out of ten tries, but is handy with power tools.

  1. Unfortunately, I do not recall many kickass women in M/M romance... And as you say, moms seem more a source of distress than a real support for the characters. But I do love Heliable in the Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk. She is fiercely supportive despite her illness and weakness.

  2. Two books come to mind Whyborne & Griffin, Heliable and Christine, the other books are the Cambridge Fellows Mysteries by Charlie Cochrane Jonty's mother and sister know and accept Jonty and Orlando even finding them a house and a housekeeper and helping them solve crimes.

  3. Not exactly a mom because he's an orphan, but Dave Taylor's best friend in The Butterfly Hunter by Julie Bozza was pretty supportive! And I really liked Mason Alexander's mother in Pretend (Blackcreek #3) by Riley Hart.
    Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  4. I don't remember the name but in the Sinner series by Rhys Ford, the mother of the Morgan clan is a mother hen with everyone but specially with Miki, Damien and Forest.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  5. I can't even recall a mother who played an active role in any m/m books I have read. I'm sure there have been some supportive mothers, but none that stood out.

  6. Reading Axel's Pup now so I will go with Bayden's mom Miriam. She is supportive of Bayden and only wants his happiness.

  7. Heliabel from the Whyborne & Griffin series by Jordan L Hawk is a favorite of mine, and that series has another great female character in Christine too. Kane's mom in Rhys Ford's Sinners series is pretty terrific and in her Cole McGinnis series, Claudia is wonderful too - she isn't Cole's biological mom but she's definitely a mom to him.

  8. If a grandma counts, Mary Beth in Tara Lain's HEARTS AND FLOUR is really awesome (and also fights ageist stereotypes in one cool swoop)!

  11. I know I have read many books with great Mom's in them, but I am not remembering right now. The two that come to mind are Whyborne's mom from the Whyborne & Griffin series and Claudia from the Cole McGinnis series.

    Thanks for the post!

  16. The only Mom I can think of is in Tameness of the Wolf - the Madison Mom. I do like her.

  17. I can only think of 2 Moms that were supportive from the m/m books I've read ... Cole Renzo's Mom from A Restored Man by Jaime Reese and Gage Sinclair's Mom from A Current Between Us by Kindle Alexander. They both are fiercely protective of their family and just want their sons to be happy.

  18. My favorite mom in an MM book would be from Rhys Ford's Dirty Series. Claudia is Cole's receptionist who has 10-11 kids of her own with numerous grandkids but has also taken on the role of mother for Cole and his friends. She always gives love and support but also slaps him upside the back of his head if he's being a fool! She's great!

  19. My favorite mom comes from one of my favorite M/M books. Paul Auster's mom Matty (and his father Larry) are two of the funniest parent characters in M/M romance. They totally support Paul in every way.

One of the best exchanges between the two of them as they try to cheer him up.

    "The best"

  20. I don't think I've read many M/M with prominent mom figures. I do remember really liking Regina Kane from A Matter of Time by Mary Calmes.
