Monique & Macky Review
Macky: Shiver me timbers...time to get piratey again Monique me hearty! Let's splice the mainbrace and get this review rolling!!
Monique: Aye, aye Captain ...I know we’ve gushed nonstop since picking up Caged, especially about how epically superb this visually stunning series is and how it deserves a multitude of accolades. It’s become a living breathing part of us, a marvel to behold. I can’t seem to get over how much this author and his words have connected us so intimately to these characters that have stolen our hearts, and the world in which they live. We have laughed, teared up, had our phones burning up with foul language and plenty of ‘Oh noes! OMG! WTF!’ and ‘I can’t believe he just did that!’ As well as the unpredictability of the events that transpire, which only further increased the anxious knots in our stomachs, with that horrible feeling of trepidation, leaving us on pins until we got to the end... and finally, felt we could breath again.
Macky: Damn girl! Let's just admit it, we're hooked on these bloody pirates and everything about their vivid, exciting, adventurous existence. Sacrificed didn't disappoint us one bit, in fact it exceeded our expectations. I loved how Bey cleverly used flashbacks to follow on exactly from where Caged ended. By using teasing hints of what happened between the trio six weeks after they were reunited, it set the tone of the story to come perfectly. Talk about intriguing. There's no doubt, Bey is the king of keeping you tantalized and enticed. Once again it was a matter of love at first sentence!
Monique: Absolutely! Another voyage into the unknown for us as readers and the characters themselves… I did have to wonder though Macky at Baltsaros’s motives for taking them on this quest in the first place. I know we were both pissed off with him on several occasions, with more than a few expletives passing in the ether between us with regards to the Captain. But I think thats where Bey Deckard excels because you really have no clue, no idea, where this author is taking us on this journey. You always feel as though you hit a calm before the storm and then those ominously dark clouds start forming overhead, as the twists and turns build in intensity. I know the pair of us were glued to this book as much as Caged.
Macky: Glued is an understatement! More like we were cemented to this book Monique; the plotting of Sacrificed was brilliant. I think with Jon’s prophetic dreams and Tom's tattooed, mapped body, it was a foregone conclusion they would have to face the dangers that awaited them on this complex voyage. It was some of Baltasors's decisions regarding the men in his life that had us wanting to slap him one minute then hug him the next. The reasons behind his compulsion to take the three of them on such a perilous crossing, into the uncharted waters of Devils Isles, brought on new sets of questions, but it also gave us much needed answers to threads that were left hanging in Caged.
Monique: Yes! Exactly!… Whilst still leaving some of those unanswered threads dangling, propelling the adventure forward. It was amazing watching this story unfold as we delve deeper into the mindset of these men and the world they live in. Learning more of their most feared secrets as the layers are peeled away, with more layers added, all whilst they also start to accept the truths about themselves… it’s not pretty to watch, it’s ugly and brutal, masked and overlayed with intense fear.
Macky: Monique, it's like a car crash waiting to happen. You don't want to watch but you're compelled not to look away.
Monique: And their relationship, MY GOD! So hot and intense, and totally fucked up! These three men each needing the other… desperately, at the same time uncertain of the role they play in each others affections. There is no denying the fact, even if they can’t see it, the love they have for each other is profound, yet distorted, like you can’t quite get a clear view of it, fractured and disconnected like they don’t quite fit. My heart was always on the edge of heartbreak with them even when I felt like I should be happy, I felt sad at all that was unresolved.
Macky: This is a true love triangle. Full of misunderstandings and confusion, the three of them trying to fit into each other's lives but not always getting it right. Mainly due to the selfish, perverted view Baltsaros holds about sharing Jon with Tom and vice versa. He wants them both but under his own rules and those rules don't always allow his lovers to indulge their own passion.
Monique: There is no doubt Macky, this is something that festers within him. The Captain is definitely a contradiction, a cold hearted bastard one minute and and then sensitive and vulnerable the next, it’s the subtleties that belie the facade. Only for him to balls everything up all over again because he can’t seem to control his anger and obsession with cleansing his soul. We sooOoo had a love hate relationship going on with this epitome of an anti hero.
Macky: Yes, we did... but I think the love overrode the hate as however monstrous he appears to be at times, there's just something about Captain Baltsaros that makes you love the contrary bastard. Enigmatic and sexy as hell, he's the bad boy that every woman, and of course man, fantasises about but beware getting on his bad side...and after the revelations in this episode, I think I'll definitely be 'giving' my heart to someone a bit safer...and you know what I mean about that Monique?
Monique: Oh yes! I know exactly where you’re going with that Macky! ...And what about Jon? Still the gentle soul we met in Caged but what a firecracker when poked! And not only in the Stateroom! It seems like our Jon has definitely been absorbing some of that dark and deviant nature that was alluded to in book #1.
Macky: OMG! Jon surprised the hell out of me. Significant traits evolved, changing him from the guileless, innocent virgin, into a strong, confident member of the crew over the course of the two books. In a way his metamorphosis is the most obvious but when you look back to Caged, there's no doubt, the person who played our emotions the most is our beloved Tom. What is it about that man Monique?
Monique: Oh Tom… he broke my heart over and over, yet again, all tough and full of bravado on the outside, yet such a sensitive soul on the inside. I don’t know about you Macky, but it felt to me like the time Tom had spent away from Baals Heart, he kind of grew up or perhaps gained perspective on a situation he was too close to, yet still vulnerable and frightened of rejection, which makes me wonder exactly what's in store for us in the final book of the series Fated. I’m desperate to read it Macky but at the same time, I really don’t want this adventure to end.
Macky: END!!!! Nooooo...this has to go on forever Monique! We can't not have these pirates in our life...what will we do! Seriously though, I know exactly what you mean. This is one of those compulsive reading experiences that gets under your skin and makes you remember what it was like when you first discovered the joy of reading. It's exciting and addictive. Thank goodness we do have another book to fuel our obsession!
