A Word from Thianna D
Most books dealing with BDSM, D/s, or spanking on the romance fiction market are focused on two things: fantasy and sex. Let’s face it – sex sells, right? And don’t get me wrong, sex is fun, hopefully passion filled, and helps the mind come up with all sorts of things. I’m okay with that. As a lifestyle submissive, I know there are more aspects to everything BDSM encompasses than anyone could ever count or be interested in (No, nobody enjoys every aspect of BDSM, just the parts that work for them). However, I find most of the fictional work revolving around the above subjects lacking – for the most part – in depth.
What kind of depth? The dominant/submissive relationship. That is far removed from the bondage, discipline, or sadomasochistic practices people include in their novellas or novels. The D/s relationship I am talking about is the one removed from sex. It is the relationship based upon the fact that one member does better being in charge and taking control and the other member is happier giving up certain control and letting someone else be in charge. Outside of the bedroom.
I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise that I love to bring in that facet into my books. What makes the dom/top/[insert your chosen word here] tick? Why does he or she feel the need to protect, cherish, and keep their sub/bottom/[insert your chosen word here] happy? What makes the sub part of the equation need certain things from his or her dom?
In my All They Ever Needed series, I approached a relationship that people who only read about this kind of lifestyle and haven’t actively participated are usually surprised about: The fact that who one is psychologically may not be who one is sexually. What I am talking about is someone who is the top in the bedroom might actually be the sub outside of it. Or the bottom in the bedroom might be the dominant in the relationship.
It might sound odd at first – especially since so many people fantasize about the perfect alpha male who takes charge in everything. And if someone is a submissive bottom (raises hand) wherein he or she is submissive both sexually and psychologically, the alpha male or female is the desired need to complete them. But think in terms of how many men, I’m talking CEOs, powerful men who submit sexually. It’s not an oxymoron. It makes sense that in their world, they need that dichotomy. Staying in control all the time must get tiring.
In All They Ever Needed, Logan is a submissive top. He doesn’t realize that at first. He just assumes he will be the top in the domestic discipline(DD) relationship he hopes to have one day. Meeting a man who is a sexual bottom who he is attracted to sets him on his path. Since Christian, after he comes to terms with things that happened to him before the books began, becomes a dominant bottom, their relationship goes in a way that surprises some readers.
But if you think about it. Logan gets what he needs: to top sexually and to be taken care of by Christian. In that way, he is able to stay the happy, content man he is. And Christian gains both of his desires: to take care of the man he loves and still enjoy the act of being spanked. Logan has a bit of me in him and I tried to paint it rather realistically in the third book, though I doubt I did it justice. For some submissives (like me), we aren’t into degradation or humiliation. Discipline is something we need, not because we act out, because we don’t act out on purpose. It’s the fact that something becomes too much emotionally, we try to hide it, and it takes us over to the point where our top/dom needs to take us in hand and help us through those emotions. If you read book three, you’ll find the scene I mean. It’s the one that solidifies Christian and Logan’s DD relationship.
So, while you will find some wonderful erotic scenes in my books, I truly do love to focus on that D/s dynamic that for me, truly makes a relationship zing. Just one girl living out her dreams via her pen and a piece of paper.
All They Ever Needed Series
As Natural As Breathing (Book #1)
For Christian Darringer, life isn’t worth living. Just back from the Middle East; scarred and with permanent damage to one leg, he does not think anyone will want him for anything. Meeting a gorgeous man he finds himself thinking about constantly is not in his plans. Pulled toward the startling younger man with striking blue eyes, he begins to question a lot of things – especially his sexuality. Not one to hide from a challenge, he plunges ahead only to find himself more than just attracted to Logan who is full of life and joy, he finds himself head over heels in love.
Logan Mannette has almost everything he ever wanted: loving parents, happiness, friends and security. The only thing missing is finding the love of his life, a love that is just like his parents’. When he meets Christian at a party, everything changes. Instantly attracted, he does his best to help this sad man and quickly finds himself feeling more than he has ever felt before. Raised in a domestic discipline household, he holds that ideal as what he wants but his interest in spanking became a fetish and when Christian admits that he wants to be spanked, Logan believes he might have found the perfect man.
Just as everything begins for them, Christian’s past intercedes and one of his brothers makes waves about him dating a man. If it weren’t for Logan’s support, he might fold; but with the love of one amazing man, Christian finds that living his life rather than just existing is as natural as breathing.
Took My Breath Away (Book #2)
Sometimes taking control is what you need to do and sometimes the best thing you can do is give that control up.
In the summer between Logan's junior and senior years of college, these two will find out more about each other and themselves than they imagined.
While unhappy to be missing four weeks of Christian's company, Logan is thrilled to spend a month with his father's relatives in New York. A naturally gregarious individual, he is used to winning people over and getting things right. Unfortunately, the Mannettes are not what he expects and for the first time in his life, he finds himself seriously doubting who he is.
Christian has regained some of his old self-esteem and is taking on new challenges. Besides growing in the relationship he has with Logan, he takes the time his boyfriend is away to learn more about domestic discipline. He learns a little online but it is actually Gregory, Logan's father, where he gains most of his information. Including the fact that his natural strength puts him in a leadership position he isn't expecting.
When Logan returns to a strong, self-assured Christian, it is with complete relief. As discussions turn to domestic discipline and they realize their true roles within their current and future relationship, both of them are able to let their inhibitions go and together their connection grows surprising Logan to an epiphany.
Breathe Each Other In (Book #3)
While the outside world might try to undermine them, Logan and Christian’s relationship just grows stronger. In this, the final part of the All They Ever Needed trilogy, their lives take an unexpected turn.
Christian takes to heart everything he learns from Logan’s father and as he and Logan go forward in their DD relationship, he finds that he is willing to not just take on the mantle of Head of House, but to embrace it. With Logan graduating from college, Christian takes the next logical step and asks his boyfriend to move in.
Even with the stress of student teaching and trying to figure out what to do after graduation, Logan leaps at the chance to live with the man he loves. As the pressure of graduation begins to get to him, the only thing to keep him grounded is the amazing man at his side.
Those closest to them make huge changes in their own lives and when an unexpected job offer lands in Logan’s lap, the two have to make a life altering decision. No matter which way they go, they need to give something up. Play it safe and stay home or accept the job and move away from their families? When it comes to decision time, there is one thing they are not willing to part with. That one thing makes all the difference in the world.
