Survival of the fittest? Not when chaos rules.
Rivvie does his best as beta, but he’s lonely and secretly nursing a broken heart. He fell for Matthew instantly, to no avail. Matt was too busy screwing every female in sight. He didn’t give one whit about Rivvie. Well, he told Rivvie he wasn’t interested. Rivvie just didn’t think he meant it.
Matt’s whole life has changed. He was the good son, the village hero, and the village stud. Now he’s just a man in a pack full of exceptional men. He’s a human—smaller, weaker and slower than the shifter males he lives with. External chaos has nothing on the internal crap he deals with every day.
When Rivvie and Matt are paired together for a task, sparks fly. It’s just possible that there’s more to sex—and more to Rivvie—than Matt ever suspected.
While Rivvie is dancing around an attraction to a certain human male, his brother, Valen is trying to lead his pack and take care of his own mate, Aaron. Just when he thinks he’s got everything under control, that very control is yanked from him by a powerful series of natural disasters, and soon Valen’s leading his pack on an exodus he’d never expected.
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of BDSM, spanking, CBT and biting
In the first book in this series we met Valen and his human mate Aaron. At the end of that book Valen agreed to take in Aaron's family and other members of his village into his own pack so that they could all help keep each other safe. This book picks up from there.
Rivvie is Valen's brother. When Valen gets a new idea to help the humans and shifters of his pack learn to work together more cohesively, he pairs Rivvie with Matthew - a human. Rivvie doesn't like the idea at all. In fact he gets quite vocal about it.
"I am not scared of that twig. He's just obnoxious and not in the fun way like I am. He's the conceited kind of obnoxious, and he has to have the last word on everything. He's a know-it-all and I'm going to end up mudding him in between the walls if I have to work with him."
Matthew is Aaron's brother, which doesn't help. It also doesn't help that Matthew is more than a little besotted with Revvie, although he is so busy having sex with women, it might seem that he isn't. But when Rivvie confronts him about it Matthew doesn't know what to say or do.
Matt wanted to run. He wanted to snap and snarl and make Rivvie yell at him. He wanted Rivvie to flirty with him again, and not give up on his when Matt did something stupid. But he knew none of that would happen.
But this story isn't all about Rivvie and Matthew. Valen has been having taking care of his pack, then a natural disaster forces all of them off the land the wolves had lived on for decades. The pack are hunted by humans who carry a sickness and the stench of death and there is a very real fear that the humans in Valen's pack, including Matthew, might get it.
Bailey Bradford has created such a unique world here, that although this book could be read as a standalone, I strongly recommend you read book one first. It will give you a better understanding of the people in this book and their relationships to each other, and to the world that the shifters and the few remaining humans inhabit. The love that develops between Matthew and Rivvie are just a small part of this riveting book and I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.
