BDSM and Wolf Shifters – Masters of Domination and Submission

At first glance you would think that a place like the Bound and Bonded club, home to the Washington wolf pack, would be full of fighting, brawling wolves, all vying for dominance in a BDSM environment. But in fact it all works out really well, as Pearson, the Alpha of the pack and owner of the club will attest to.

“As wolf shifters, we all understand the need for hierarchy and our place in the pack. That translates really well into the club situation because there are those wolves that seek the protection of a more dominant male. On the other hand, dominant wolves are more settled when they have someone smaller and physically weaker to care for.”

From my observations of the club, it would seem that the whole concept does have a type of symmetry to it. Yin and Yang. Pearson doesn’t allow non-pack members into the club, especially humans who are oblivious to the paranormals that inhabit their world. Wolf shifters, even the smaller ones, are stronger and more able to take pain and other punishments usually considered too severe for even the most devout pain slut in the human environment. Keeping non-pack members out of the club also allows any shifter, to shift if they need to, which is apparently useful for healing purposes.

That doesn’t mean that the club is full of blood and screams however. Dominance and submission takes many forms, and wolves are by nature caring creatures. No shifter in the Bound and Bonded club is allowed to just declare themselves a Dominant and start laying into submissive wolves. Pearson is adamant that everyone who has access to the club has proven training, or is prepared to be trained both in Dominance and submission. His strict application policy weeds out most undesirables.

“It’s like any human situation,” Pearson explains. “You have good shifters and not so good shifters. When it comes down to it, we are as much governed by our human selves, as our animal nature. There is evil in every species.”

But I wondered were the lines between domination and submission so clear cut? What happened, as in the case of Ace and his vampire mate Devin, when both were strong in terms of power and strength? Who became the submissive one in that relationship?

“I had similar problems with my own mate,” Pearson said with a smile. “He was a Dominant as well, and his wolf was almost as strong as mine. But Fate pairs us up for a reason, and in my case, and Ace’s as well, we found ways to compromise.”

As in the human world, the Bound and Bonded club meets the needs of the predominantly wolf shifter members by allowing each individual to be themselves. The scenes might be more intense, the passion that much hotter, but wolf shifters are a natural fit in the BDSM lifestyle. The Bound and Bonded club is a good example of how well it can work for those involved.

Book Four Bound and Bonded Series
(Can be read as standalone)
Ace is on a mission. On the run from his old pack, the enforcer is determined that cat shifter Teric must die. In his head it's the only way he can regain his place in the Washington pack and the Bound and Bonded club. In an effort to meet his needs for Domination in the human world, Ace visits Whips, a predominantly human BDSM club and gets the shock of his life.
Devin is a five hundred year old vampire who has been searching for his one and only for the longest time. Working as a house sub at Whips was fine until one Master over steps his boundaries and Devin is left with time on his hands. Deciding on a whim to track down the delicious wolf shifter he had smelled at the club, Devin soon tracks down Ace...and then promptly wishes he hadn't. Ace is a wolfist and refuses to accept Devin as his mate.
Misunderstandings are just one hurdle these two need to overcome, if they are ever to have their HEA. The enforcers from the Washington Pack are still looking for Ace, and when they find him it might prove the end for both Devin and Ace.
Warnings; this is a gay erotic romance about a wolf shifter and a vampire. The book includes graphic sex scenes between men, BDSM elements and coarse language.

Macky’s Review

The primary mate pairing in this sexy novella is 'fur and fangs', so if you're into wolves and vamps with a touch of kink, then you're going to love this. This is only my second Lisa Oliver but both have been really enjoyable. I like how she portrays her characters, the chemistry pops, the stories are hot and her writing style is very easy on the eye. This particular series is set around a pack of shifters who own a BDSM club called Bound and Bonded and each story has centred on one of the pack members finding his mate.

Wolf shifter and Dom: Ace Tarlton is hard to get a handle on to begin with. He's a purist who believes that wolves are superior to other supernatural species and should only mate within their own race. His animosity towards feline shifter Teric, who not only humiliated him but got him banished from his old pack, is palpable. Still seething, all he has on his mind is revenge. Not thinking straight, he wants the cat responsible for ruining his life dead, hoping (deludedly) that he'll regain his place among his old pack members once the deed is done. But with an over protective mate in the shape of head enforcer Kyle in the picture; getting close to Teric is no easy task and all he succeeds in doing is separating himself even further from his former pack 'brothers', putting himself (and others in the long run) in physical danger.

Disgraced and now without a pack, Ace has to get his particular sexual needs filled at a seedy BDSM club owned and populated by humans...something else that goes against his beliefs, but at this point he has no other choice. What he doesn't expect to find there, is what looks to be a beautiful young human doing a scene with a nasty, uncaring Dom...only when he sees a flash of red in the captivating blonde's striking violet eyes, he realises the sub is not human at all...he's a vampire, and if the delicious, enticing smell around him is anything to go by...Ace has found his mate...big shock!! So what does he do? He runs!

Devin, is actually a five hundred year old vampire who keeps his power and blood lust at bay by using pain and rough sex to suppress his urges. Passing himself off as a human sub he can get it on a regular basis, and by moving around, no one gets too close to notice how quickly he heals after a scene. For hundreds of years Devin has longed to meet his mate or amorata, and as soon as he locks eyes with the lone wolf shifter, he knows straight away that he's finally found the one he's waited so long for. But with his tunnel visioned views and dire need for retribution, stubborn Ace is not an easy catch.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ace and Devin's love story. It takes a while to get around the way Ace acts at the start but as you get to know more about him and see the protective side of him emerging under all the aggression, the more you come to love him. And Devin is just gorgeous. He's a bit of a dark horse and not everything about him is cut and dried so there are a few surprises in store for Ace when it comes to his adorable little sub.

Considering its 'stubborn shifter' theme, Fighting Fangs isn't too over the top in the angst department; although there were times when I wanted give both Ace and Kyle a slap upside their heads for being so damn mulish, not always taking into consideration how their enmity could have negative repercussions on their mates and relationships. Especially Kyle who surprisingly turned out to be UBER obstinate! The BDSM elements aren't hard core but there's still some yummy hot kink in there, so if you like your sex steamy and a bit more adventurous you won't be disappointed because Lisa writes really great sex scenes, and even if BDSM isn't your scene I think this will still work for most m/m romance readers.

Not having read any of the others, I didn't know anything about the world Lisa Oliver created for this series and even though it can be read as a standalone, personally I wish now I'd read them in order before jumping in at book four. Whatever happened in the previous story, between Ace, Kyle and Teric had a big influence on why Ace is so angry when this book opens and I think if I'd had prior knowledge of exactly what went down in that book, it would have given me a much better understanding of the dynamics between everyone in the book...especially between Ace and Kyle. Plus in a series like this, where couples from the previous books pop in and out of each other's stories, I always think it's good to grow with regular characters from the onset. But overall this is still a satisfying reading experience and I've gained another author to add to my ever growing TBR shelf...I see a Bound and Bonded catch up session on the horizon!

“This is not a scene. Not this time. This is us, together. Mate. Amatus. No rules. No restrictions. Just two men who will be together for a lifetime.”

Devin’s eyes flashed a brilliant red, the sight almost shocking Ace with its intensity and then it was gone just as quickly.

“I want that,” Devin said softly, as his hands came up from where they had been resting on the bed and gripped Ace’s biceps. “I want that a lot,” his voice finishing on a growl that set Ace’s wolf on edge as though not sure whether to challenge or submit. But that growl left Ace in no doubt that the man underneath him was as much a predator as he was.

  1. Neither wins they are both strong. They should combine their strengths.

  2. Neither wins they are both strong. They should combine their strengths.

  3. Vampires of Course! Vampires are able to disappear and re-appear! (Can't they??!?)

  4. It ultimately depends upon which author is setting the rules *grin*. I think vampires win because of the traditional mind control abilities (I'm speaking of folklore from various cultures in which vampires are popular, NOT whatever the flavor of the week may be in modern vampire fiction). Where vampires and wolves/werewolves exist together, vampires are traditionally in a position of power over wolves, often leading armies of wolves. So regardless of which species I may prefer, I'd have to go with vampires being more powerful.

  5. A werewolf if he attacks when a vampire is weakest.

  6. They are both smart enough to know they'd be better together
