Months after being forced to leave his lover and mate Ari Jannsen behind, Hunter Devin settles into his role as Enforcer for the newly formed Deagan Clan under the rule of his new Alpha and best friend Tristan ‘Trip’ Hagan. Along with Hunter’s brother Boone, their nephews, sister, and mother, Hunter finally has the family he’s always wanted, but without his little rebel Ari, his heart is incomplete.
The Hagan Clan is unable to accept the Deagan Clan’s betrayal for walking away and taking the clan’s pups with them. War looms. As both clans plan their attack, a greater enemy plots against them. But Hunter is determined to get his Ari back. Bonds are put to the test and unexpected alliances are made as Hunter and his clan set out to protect their own and end the spreading heartache.
Ari couldn’t run anymore. His body was in agony, his throat burned, and his nose was so very cold. He’d lost track of how many hours he’d been at it. For the last few hours he’d been following his nose and his instincts. The trees had begun to blur, the forest looking the same no matter where he was. His exhaustion threatened to take over, but he pushed onward, refusing to give his mother the satisfaction. They would kill him if he stopped longer than a few heartbeats. He’d never get to be with Hunter. Never get to be in his arms again. Never taste his lips or hear his throaty voice. His heart beat wildly, demanding he push harder. Hunter would never give up on him. Ari wouldn’t give up either. Being a smaller husky allowed him to fit through spaces Koschei and his pack couldn’t, which in turn helped keep him one step ahead. But even his kind needed to rest at some point. He understood the Deagan Clan’s need to get as far away from Perin and the Hagan Clan as possible, but did they have to pick a town all the way across St. Veles?
In desperate need of a rest, Ari listened to the sounds of the forest and the air around him. He couldn’t tell where Kristoff and his pack were, but he should be able to rest for a minute or two. Tongue hanging out, he crawled into a small collection of shrubs, the sound of his panting meeting his ears. He lay on the cool grass, his ears listening for any signs of his pursuers. His blood felt as though it were boiling, his skin was hot, and his paws ached. The grass and dirt helped bring his body temperature down a bit. When his pounding heart slowed, he perked his ears up as he listened. Feeling it was safe, he crawled out from the shrubs. He could really do with a longer rest, but he couldn’t afford to take such a risk.
Twigs snapped somewhere close by, and Ari jumped. In a panic, he took off without looking ahead of him, and a thick root snagged his paw. He yelped at the sting before he stumbled down the side of a hill and landed painfully in a prickly bush.
