Synopsis

As the landlord of The Dragon’s Lair and leader of The Black Dragons Motorcycle Club, Axel Carmichael has seen it all and done it all. He’s a respected and experienced dom. Nothing shocks him any more, and nobody catches him off guard.
When Bayden rides up to The Dragon’s Lair on a bike worth more than most men earn in a year, and immediately demonstrates that he has far more attitude than sense, it’s easy for Axel to write him off as a silly little rich boy who’s about to get himself killed.
But, there’s more to Bayden than meets the eye. He’s no silly little boy, rich or otherwise, and werewolves aren’t easy to kill.

Liza’s Review

Bayden walks into Axel's bar, claiming not to be looking for trouble. Within minutes he's been challenged to a fight. Seems trouble follows the little wolf shifter whether he wants it or not. Bayden wins, that's a given, but there is something in the small wolf that triggers something in Axel, and he invites him to come back to the bar anytime.

Bayden is closed mouthed and holds a lot of secrets. He knows that Axel pegs him as some sort of silly little rich boy, but that is so far from the truth it's not funny. Baden has learned to lie about where he is from and what he does - but he's trying to survive.

Three times Bayden comes in, sits quietly, gets goaded into fighting for money and comes out with the money in his pocket. Each time Axel patches up his face, holds his money and then gives it to him when Bayden leaves. Then Axel invites Bayden to come and play with him - because yes this is a BDSM book and Axel is a Dom. But is Bayden a sub?

I can play just as well as I fight.

Unfortunately it didn't come to that. It seems, in the first part of the book at least that every idiot that ever went into Axel's bar was out to prove they could better a wolf shifter.

In this intriguing story wolves are known to humans but there are many draconian laws (human laws) that prevent shifters from getting ahead, or even living a decent life among them. Like the no-pack law where no more than two adult shifters can live in a house together. I found that so sad, because wolves by nature are a pack animal. But Braydon's nature is an important part of this story. He recognizes Axel as an Alpha even though the man is human. By doing that, it is in Braydon's instinct to do whatever Axel wants him to.

Axel was the king of the world. All he had to do was make sure his one and only subject was never given a reason to want to turn it into a republic.

But Axel has rules of his own, and they stop the two men getting together for the longest time. Apparently the idea of baiting wolves is common in this world of Ms. Dare's but humans are only allowed to do it under the guise of a bet. It is a strange system, but it is how Bayden makes his money, so he doesn't see anything wrong with it. Axel, being human, sees a lot wrong with it, especially as he is the one who has to patch Bayden up when he has been hurt.

Bayden has only two other people important in his life - his mother and his grandfather. They both have differing ideas on how a wolf shifter should act. Bayden's dead father had different ideas as well and these three viewpoints don't help Bayden in his relationship with Axel. One of the things I loved about Axel was when he tried to learn to see things from a wolf's perspective. He knew if he wanted to keep Bayden permanently then he had to understand how to relate to him in wolf form as well.

This is, by far, one of the most unusual and yet amazing books I have read in a long time. The world building was excellent, Axel and Bayden were so deliciously mixed up at times it was either funny, or it made me cry. There were a couple of times I thought that Bayden came across more like a child than an adult male, but Bayden's life (before he met Axel) justified that. The secondary characters, especially other members of the Dragons, all played their part and overall this is a book I will read over and over again.

  6. The second class status of weres reminds me a bit of Jennifer Ashley's shifter series, but nothing else does, of course. She writes much tamer m/f books.
