What Would You Do if You Realized You Were Second Place in Someone’s Life?

I’ve been thinking about this quite a lot recently. I don’t think it’s sexist to say that our culture has traditionally expected wives to take second place to the husband’s needs. However life is changing albeit slowly and thankfully the definition of marriage is expanding. Stay at home dads aren’t as unusual as they used to be, especially in cases when the wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend earns more than the man, nor is moving because of their job.

So here I’m thinking about the one moment Shae realised that his own desires would always take second place to Morgan’s. I’m not going to describe what happens next (please buy my book – yes that’s my plug). Oh God, my brain just went off into thinking about butt plugs. Focus, Sue.

What would you have done at that moment? I think it must be very hard to be a young man on the cusp of venturing into your adult life and realise you’ll take second place to your loved one, possibly for the rest of your life. It’s a hard thing to ask of anyone.

Have you ever been in that position? Did it bother you at the time? I gave up my business to look after our kids. We weren’t in a position to do anything different. Only now do I think that maybe sharing the main parental role would have benefited us both.

By mutual agreement they headed for the beach for a walk before bedtime.

“Why did our relationship go wrong?” he asked, stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to look down at Shae.

Shae frowned. “You stuck your cock in Olivia Atherstone.”

“I don’t mean then. I mean beforehand. We were going wrong before that, and you know it.”

He saw the conflict in Shae’s eyes, the need to blame everything on Morgan’s one stupid action even though their relationship had been on rocky ground for over a year.

He watched Shae wander over to the rail and look out to sea. It was early evening and there were still plenty of people around. The beach wasn’t really the place for an in-depth heart-to-heart.

Shae turned around, resting his back against the rail, and said, “Do you remember the day you told me Xander wanted you to come and work for him after college?”

Morgan tried to remember. “Not really. Was that before I worked on The Last Resort?”

“Yeah. You were so excited. You picked me up from class, do you remember? We went for a drive along the coast and you talked about the start of your new career. You talked for hours about it. How that film was the most exciting thing you’d ever done and it was the launch pad to your whole world.”

Morgan had vague memories of the conversation—snatches of him rambling on about how that one movie was the start of their life together. “You ended it by saying our lives would be right here in LA. We would never need to move away from the sunshine.”

Shae snorted lightly and turned to face the sea again. There was something he wasn’t able to see, something important to Shae, to their old relationship.

Morgan touched Shae’s shoulder gently. “Tell me what I’m missing.”

“That was the day I knew I was secondary to your career.”
