After an attack by the Coalition leaves THIRDS Team Leader Sloane Brodie critically injured, agent Dexter J. Daley swears to make Beck Hogan pay for what he’s done. But Dex’s plans for retribution are short-lived. With Ash still on leave with his own injuries, Sloane in the hospital, and Destructive Delta in the Coalition’s crosshairs, Lieutenant Sparks isn’t taking any chances. Dex’s team is pulled from the case, with the investigation handed to Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs. Dex refuses to stand by while another team goes after Hogan, and decides to put his old HPF detective skills to work to find Hogan before Theta Destructive, no matter the cost.
With a lengthy and painful recovery ahead of him, the last thing Sloane needs is his partner out scouring the city, especially when the lies—however well-intentioned—begin to spiral out of control. Sloane is all too familiar with the desire to retaliate, but some things are more important, like the man who’s pledged to stand beside him. As Dex starts down a dark path, it’s up to Sloane to show him what’s at stake, and finally put a name to what’s in his heart.
I can't believe I've just finished book four of the THIRDS series, because it doesn't seem like five minutes since these fantastic guys burst on the scene and took us all by storm. For the last three books, although we've been given hints of what's to come for the other main couples, the focus has really been on Dex and Sloane and of course if you've been following the series, which I'm pretty sure most of you have, then you'll have been left like I was; absolutely desperate to get your hands on this book after that nail biting, hair tearing, shock horror cliffy at the end of Rack & Ruin! OMG! I can't tell you how much my heart was left thumping in my chest at that finale...so just how do you follow that?
Well, you follow it with another delightfully entertaining episode, that picks up exactly where it left off; taking the guys in the THIRDS on another rip roaring ride until our fave tall dark and handsome, hot jaguar shifter and his endearingly sexy, wise cracking fella, finally get the wrap up they deserve...and considering what they've had to go through it's a really satisfying one!
Not just that, this time around it gave me a bit more of everything I've been waiting (greedily) to see since the series began. More focus on the actual shifting, a little more of the emotional side of the Therian's, deeper insights into their animal traits and (YAY) more of the other major relationships unfolding in the background. Without getting too spoilery, if you've been on pins waiting to see some 'action' between certain people <winks> instead of just the more-ish sexual tension that's been keeping us invested up to now...then you're in for a treat. Just enough to hook us in, but not too much to spoil the anticipation of what's to come. A clever move I think because I have to be honest, as much as I love Dex and Sloane as a couple, I've been wondering whether the decision to keep us waiting for the other main characters romances, has drawn the wait out a little too long. If I hadn't had these bones thrown to me during this story then I'm not sure it would have worked quite as well, but despite saying that I can't deny I still came away loving this one a lot!
The blurb is informative enough so I'm not going to rehash it, but obviously you'll get the idea there's going to be more than a few moments of exasperation and contention happening between everyone involved as Dex takes it upon himself to go out there on his own without the aid of a safety net, so to speak, while Destructive Delta is out of the loop and Sloane out of action. Which means Dex has to call on outside aid to help him achieve his ultimate goal; to eliminate the big bad Tiger Therian: Hogan, so that means we get to see more of the cheeky, sneaky, cheetah: Austen Payne, who we met in book #3. I love his character and would like to see Charlie pair him up with someone worthy of his Dex like personality. How the rest of the story pans out is something I think you should just sit back and discover for yourselves because that's the joy of reading these books. But if for some reason you've not discovered THIRDS yet, do yourselves a massive favour and start from the very beginning. That's a must!
I have to give it to Charlie Cochet. She never fails to give us pure unadulterated entertainment with her THIRDS series. The whole cast of characters are larger than life, lovable to the extreme and addictive because of it, making it compulsive reading and you just have to come back for more. In a way the actual stories take a back seat to the personalities themselves because personally it's the guys that I find myself coming come back to see again and again...what they get up to is definitely a big part of the draw but it's not all about the action and excitement. Some of the best scenes for me have been the normal, everyday interactions and banter between them. I've said it before, it makes you want to be in 'their gang' and part of the camaraderie that cements them as a team. So what! There might be moments of predictability and the odd cliche thrown in here and there but what the hell? If it's not broke don't fix it and Charlie Cochet hasn't broken a thing!
Then there's the chemistry...whatever explosive action is happening in the background, the connection and sexual tension is always pitched perfectly. In Dex and Sloane's case it's been a fantastic journey, watching them grow closer on an emotional level, as well as sexual, as they’ve fall in love, plus like always the love scenes are hot, steamy and sensual as well as romantic. SIGH!!! I admit to more than a few gooey, sappy moments where I came over all melty again. And even though there are serious spells because of the emotional content, there's still plenty laugh out loud Dex moments which keeps that integral fun feel to the whole package. It's witty, sexy, exciting and diverting. Now I really am wired up for book five because we get to go through it all again with a couple whose story I've been dying to read. So bring on that grumpy Lion and his smitten little Cheetah, because I have a feeling that's going to be a PURRRRFECT match!
Oh and get ready for Sloane doing something very un-Sloane like...yep, I said Sloane! Hahaha... One Republic anyone?
