Successful lawyer Santi Herrera couldn’t be happier with the direction his life is taking. Not only is he on track to becoming a partner in his law firm, but he’s planning his wedding to Hank Burton, a south Texas contractor who has made a name for himself despite his humble beginnings. The introverted lone wolf Santi and the friendly, outgoing Hank complement each other perfectly. From the moment they laid eyes on each other, they were hooked, and as far as Santi and Hank are concerned, a happily ever after is their destiny.
But fate deals them a devastating new hand.
A construction accident leaves Hank with severe head trauma and brings him precariously close to death. When he finally awakens, Hank doesn’t remember Santi or the love they shared for the past three years. Santi faces the greatest challenge of his life. Can he respark a flame his lover can’t recall? And can he stop the diverging paths that fickle fate charts between them?
Santi has faith in the love he and Hank shared and in the words his father once spoke to him: “It’s never too late to fall in love. All over again.”

This is my first Jacob Z. Flores book and ya know what? It was really good! I was intrigued by the blurb because of the amnesia theme. It's a phenomenon that both fascinates and horrifies me because try as I might I just can't imagine what it would be like to wake up one day and completely forget your life, not even recognizing the people you deeply love. Or, on the opposite scale of things, become a complete stranger to someone who you've loved, and lived beside for years. It really is a horrible and frightening thought on both counts, and one I hope I never have to experience. But that's exactly what happens to Santi Herrera and the love of his life Hank Burton; when Texan contractor Hank falls from a building at his latest construction site, causing a serious, amnesia inducing, head trauma. A cruel twist of fate that within a matter of minutes, alters both their lives dramatically. From then on it’s a hard fight for Santi; who loves his man more than life itself, to get them both back on the (many times rocky) road to rediscovering their once unconditional love for each other.
What hurts Santi the most is that the majority of Hanks past memories are still intact, the only years missing are the three deliriously happy one's they've spent together. He remembers everything prior to them, including family, friends and unfortunately Karl: the partner he was involved and in love with before Santi. A man he’d split from when their relationship failed due to Karl's unhealthy lifestyle choices. So in effect he thinks he's still in love with his ex boyfriend, leaving poor Santi having to start over from scratch, to get the man he's still crazy about to fall in love with him all over again. It was practically love at first sight the moment they originally met, so surely that will happen again when Hank is back at home with Santi again...won't it???
"Can you tell me who this man behind me is?"......
"I've never seen him before in my life."
So really you end up with two separate love stories for the price of one because initially we see how they first meet and fall in love…and that really is a fairy tale romance… then we get the hard fought for journey to love again, which is as far away from their original romance as you can get! Santi's fairly tale romance becomes the stuff of nightmares the second time around, bless him, but giving up isn't an option. And that's what makes Santi the complete sweetie that he is.
Love or lust at first sight? Make you're own mind up about that, but in the beginning these two guys just can't get enough of each other. Practically inseparable from the moment they lay eyes, and hands, on each other they're a match made in heaven. In fact they're so much in love it's almost saccharine! They have pet names for each other, feel lost when they're not in each other's company and have hot, hot, hot, passionate sex that's made all the more perfect because it's like they know each other's needs and bodies inside out.
"I could never forget you Santi Herrera. The man who entranced me with his dazzling smile and his hot body. You're one sexy fucker, you know that?"
It's a relationship that's almost too good to be true...which is clever planning because when the shock fall out from the accident happens and suddenly they're back to being strangers, it really makes the rest of the story all the more compelling, as it takes what starts out as something fairly light and fluffy, into more emotional waters.
The build up to it was great, but the amnesia segment was my favourite part. What I loved was that Jacob didn’t give them an easy ride. He doesn’t make it cliched or predictable by having Hank suddenly start remembering odd 'flashes' of their life together, neither does he have Hank harbouring feelings of attraction for Santi within minutes of them being in each other's company again, which tends to be the case in this type of romantic trope. OH NO! From the word go, he's wary, agitated and skittish around this stranger who everyone keeps insisting is the person he's meant to be with. Pushing him to jump back into their life together hoping it will jog his memory, it just causes him to pull even further away from Santi emotionally. He's not the man he was before so there's no insta love or lust this time around...only confusion, discomfort, upset and the need to be with the only man he can remember having feelings for, and that's Karl. What a predicament! Their second time round courtship is slow going and not an easy journey for either of them but what will be, will be and with patience, a whole lot of heart and an undying sense of love that never wanes for Santi, he hangs in there, ever hopeful that he'll get his old Hank back.
Considering its plot, this is still an upbeat, sweet, sexy novel that does have its underlying sad, poignant moments, but ultimately is very much a feel good, warm and fuzzies type of story. The sort that will definitely leave you feeling contented and satisfied with its outcome. There are some extremely likable supporting characters amongst both their friends, and Santi and Hank are so endearing, that like me I think you'll just end up loving them to bits. A well thought out love story with a great twist and one that's definitely put Mr Flores on my radar, so I'm off to check out more books of his. Very enjoyable and highly recommended...liked this a lot.

Meet Jacob Z. Flores
Jacob Z. Flores lives a double life. During the day, he is a respected college English professor and mid-level administrator. At night and during his summer vacation, he loosens the tie and tosses aside the trendy sports coat to write man on man fiction, where the hard ass assessor of freshmen level composition turns his attention to the firm posteriors and other rigid appendages of the characters in his fictional world.
Summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, provide Jacob with inspiration for his fiction. The abundance of barely clothed man flesh and daily debauchery stimulates his personal muse. When he isn’t stroking the keyboard, Jacob spends time with his daughter. They both represent a bright blue blip in an otherwise predominantly red swath in south Texas.
