With his brother away at a conference, alpha wolf shifter Shadow finds himself paired with IT analyst Mace, the one man he can't stand. Stuck with the partnership due to his pack leader's order, Shadow can only count down the days until his life returns to normal. He's a loner. Period. No matter how much his inner beast protests.
Mace isn't thrilled either, but can't resist the temptation to push all the surly alpha's buttons, even as he fantasizes about what could be. Flirting with danger, he's determined to make the best of the situation, if he can only get Shadow to give in to both their desires.
Unfortunately, a twisted revenge-seeker has other plans. A series of events rocks the entire pack, leaving innocent people hurt and fear running rampant. Both men are thrust into the chaos, working tirelessly to track down the culprit before someone winds up dead. The pressure of trying to stay a jump ahead, with absolutely no clues, pushes them to the brink. Add in a burning hunger for each other, and their world begins to crumble around them. With no other choice, they have to trust and depend on one another in order to have a chance at solving the mystery and saving lives.
Shadow and Mace - Oil and Water - Shadow hates Mace with...an unnatural intensity. However when the Alpha tells Shadow he has to work with Mace for a few days while his regular partner is busy elsewhere, Shadow grits his teeth determined to hate every minute.
"I thought I was here to keep you from going apeshit crazy." Mace managed to keep a straight face. "Although, I think I'm fighting a losing battle."
Both men belong to the Clear Sky Pack, so yes, the two men are wolf shifters. But this isn’t an insta-mate type of story. In Ms. Meadow's world mates are chosen rather than predestined. Both men secretly find the other one attractive but neither of them really know why. Mace is snarky and as a beta wolf really grates on Shadow's Alphaness. Shadow prefers submissive men, and Mace is anything but.
The attraction between them isn't the only thing that Shadow and Mace have to worry about. A series of seemingly unrelated incidences targeting lower ranked pack members has both men trying to find a connection and a cause. Shadow took the attacks on pack members personally and his stress levels were rising to astronomical levels. Mace wanted to help but he didn't know how - well he did, but Shadow wouldn't take the bait. When he finally did, both men found what they were looking for in more ways than one.
Both men remained true to their roles within the wolf pack - Shadow as an Alpha and Mace as a Beta wolf. Consequently Shadow spent most of the book snarling and snapping at everyone including Mace. The readers were allowed to see Mace's feelings and how they grew into love for the grumpy Alpha, but Shadow's weren't explored as much and that bothered me a bit.
By the time the two men did get together it felt like there was just a tiny bit missing out of the story. The couple of lines towards the end of the book didn't do justice to the huge shift Shadow made from hating Mace, to loving him. Otherwise it was a perfect book full of hot scenes and an intriguing mystery as well.
