Alpha wolf shifter Detective Dax Steel is hip deep in homicide cases, all bear shifters who seemingly died in of natural causes in their prime. To make matters worse, the murders throw him back in contact with his ex-lover, Adin.
Adin shares the same genetics as the victims and a healthy appetite for the sexy and addictive Dax. A two week blazing hot affair between them fell apart almost as quickly as it started, leaving Adin longing but hesitant to risk his heart once more.
Can Dax track down the killer before Adin lands in his crosshairs? Will they come together as a team and find love is lasting after all?
Dax is a wolf shifter, Alpha, on a mission to find out who has been singling out and killing bear shifters in his town. As a Detective this is more than just a job to him, and he takes the threat on the bear shifting community seriously. So seriously, that he decides to call in the help of his ex-lover, Adin, another bear shifter, who he had a brief affair with years before.
The killer in this story is an enigma right to the end of the book. The reader is introduced to her, yes the killer is female, and some back story is shared, but you are not told who she is until the very end. Dax is running around trying to get leads, and work out what is going on because he doesn't want Adin to be the next target. Adin, well he's just trying to be the bear he's always been - solitary and trying not to get his heart tangled up in Dax again. Neither one of them have an easy job of it.
The problems that plagued Adin and Dax three years previously are still evident when the two men come together again and this is unusual in shifter stories. There is no fated mates in this book, just two men who happen to be shifters, and who have problems in their relationship, just like us humans. But the shifter elements are there as well and this is something I think the author did beautifully. Too often in shifter books the men are so perfect and they have this instant love, which I adore, don't get me wrong. But this book is unique amongst MM Shifter stories, not only because of the problems the two men shared, but because so many of the secondary characters were shifters as well – hyenas, foxes, and a grizzly bear who hates all other types of bears. It was funny in parts, clever in others and I was kept guessing about the identity of the killer right up until she revealed herself.
