“If you love someone, set him free.”
“If he doesn’t come back, hunt him down and kill him.”
One to Leave is the fifth book in Tia Louise’s One to Hold series. I am a fan of this series and have been highly anticipating this book. Stuart has had this mysterious presence throughout the series, particularly in the last book, so I was very curious to see just what he was about and what his road to a happy forever would look like. This sexy cowboy has a dark past that incessantly haunts him. He’s on a path of destruction until a pair of hazel eyes stops him in his tracks.
“I was born to serve and protect, and they’d sent me home to join the faceless millions.”
Stuart Knight (a.k.a. Captain Asshat) spent years serving his country as a marine. He is strong, authoritative and commands respect. When an injury to his spinal column prevents him from continuing active duty, the physical and emotional pain he experiences leads Stuart down a very dark path. His battle takes him to his uncle’s ranch in Montana, a place where he can somehow attempt to make sense of all that his life has become and fight his inner demons. Stuart is determined to get back overseas and continue to serve and protect his country. He is willing to sacrifice everything to get back to his dream and that includes keeping his family and any chance at love at bay.
“Stuart Knight had locked his heart up tight, but I was determined to break in and steal it.”
Mariska Heron meets Stuart very briefly when he comes into the gym she works at to speak with Kenny (someone in Stuart’s brother’s life). When certain events occur, Mariska decides to listen to her inner voice and heads to Montana in search of the sexy marine who made an impression. She understands that what she is doing is crazy but she can’t help but follow what her gut is telling her to do. Mariska somehow weaves her way in and stays at the ranch where Stuart also is. The problem is that Mariska has not revealed the truth as to why she came to Montana and the closer her and Stuart become the more everything can blow up in her face.
“Don’t set your sites on me, Mariska.” Hazel eyes burned into mine. “When the time comes, I will leave.”
I really liked Mariska. She may be young but Stuart’s tortured soul calls to her and she can’t help but want to be the person that helps him heal. She wants desperately to break through and show Stuart that he can find new dreams to pursue and have a promising future. Stuart is stubborn and despite his deep connection with the beautiful brunette, he is set upon leaving once he heals enough to return to active duty. Can Mariska lead him down a different path, one where he embraces love and forgets his duty to his country? With lies and a whole lot of emotional turmoil between them, is the pair doomed before they even begin?
Tia Louise has written another book that had me happily smiling and rooting for the characters. One to Leave was a lot of fun to read despite some more serious undertones. I am definitely looking forward to more and to seeing what else this author has cooking in that brain of hers.

If you asked where this sudden surge of bravery came from, I’d have to be honest. I had no fucking idea. Stuart rode into the barn looking like sex on two legs… very tired sex on two legs, but sex on two legs all the same, and I made up my mind. After the way he kissed me yesterday, I didn’t care what type of bullshit line he tried to spin, Stuart Knight was in the same space as me. He was fighting hard, but he wanted this.
Now I was in his bedroom ordering him around, and he was actually allowing it. Humoring me, more like it. Not for one minute was I suffering from the delusion that this man took orders from anyone. Still, for whatever reason, exhaustion or simple curiosity, he let me take the lead.
Once his shirt was off, I couldn’t hide the hitch in my breath at the site of his lined torso. Ridges crossed his abdomen, lines stretched across his broad shoulders and down his arms. He lay on his stomach across the mattress, and it was all I could do not to run my tongue over every inch of his beautiful body. Instead, I quickly took off my boots, and for increased mobility (yes, that was my excuse), I removed my denim shorts.
Lightly I smoothed my palm across his lower back, trying to remember the touches I’d learned in the few massage therapy classes I’d taken. Why hadn’t I taken more? Kneading a little harder, I knew I had to get lower, down into the pelvic area to give him relief.
“Do you mind if I remove your boxers?” My voice was breathless and trembling. Those snug, dark briefs didn’t hide much, but I knew once I saw that ass, I’d be a goner.
One word. He’d sounded almost as cautious as me when he said it. Closing my eyes, I shook myself. Now was the time. This was my man. If I was going to make it happen, if I was going to make any of this make sense, from the day I left Bayville to this moment, I had to go for it. Fate had dropped this opportunity straight in my lap.
Inhaling a quiet breath, I gently pulled the waistband out and lowered it down his legs. I knew what was on the other side, pressed between his pelvis and the mattress, and I didn’t want to hurt him. Miraculously, I got his underwear off, and
Square and tight, with palm-sized indentations on each side… For a moment, I could only stare at his backside. Perfect and golden as the rest of him.
Climbing back onto my knees, I took the quietest deep breath in the history of recorded time. It trembled going in, and my hand trembled reaching out. I touched him. He seemed to breathe at that exact moment as well—almost as if he’d been holding his breath, too.
