Blood: Book One
Adrien Gilbert has spent several lifetimes searching for the love he lost. Born in the 1800s into a clan of fabled vampire hunters, Adrien once wanted nothing more than to tend his family’s vineyard in southern France or read a good book. But Adrien’s peaceful existence ends abruptly when his older brother, François, is murdered. Bound by his hunter’s oath, Adrien sets out on a path that will forever change his life when he agrees to execute his brother’s killer, the vampire Charles Duvalier.
After months chasing the elusive Charles, Adrien reluctantly makes a bargain with Nicolas Lambert, an ancient vampire. Adrien will escort Nicolas to Paris for his marriage to a rival clanswoman, and Nicolas will help Adrien find Charles. Nicolas’s quiet strength and gentle heart soon convince Adrien that Nicolas is nothing like the vampires he has sworn to destroy. As the wedding date draws nearer, a force intent on destroying the fragile peace between the vampire clans threatens to tear apart both the vampire realm and the world of the hunters. To secure both past and future for those he loves, Adrien must find a way to stop the looming war between hunters and vampires. But first he’ll have to let Nicolas go.

The Thing I Don’t Know I Don’t Know by Brent Hartinger

Buy from Amazon –>

"I guess this was what they meant by a loss of innocence. Who knew?"
Russel Middlebrook is twenty-three years old, gay, and living in trendy Seattle, but life isn't keeping up with the hype. Most of his friends have a direction in life—either ruthlessly pursuing their careers or passionately embracing their own aimlessness. But Russel is stuck in place. All he knows is that crappy jobs, horrible dates, and pointless hook-ups just aren't cutting it anymore.
What's the secret? What does everyone else know that he doesn't?
Enter Kevin, Russel's perfect high school boyfriend. Could rekindling an old flame be the thing Russel needs to get his life back on track? Or maybe the answer lies in a new friend, an eccentric screenwriter named Vernie Rose, who seems plenty wise. Or what the hell? Maybe Russel will find some answers by joining his best friend Gunnar's crazy search for the legendary Bigfoot!
One way or another, Russel is determined to learn the all-important secret to life, even if it's a thing he doesn't even know he doesn't know.
Author Brent Hartinger first made a splash writing books for teens. The Thing I Didn't Know I Didn't Know, Hartinger's first book for older readers, is just as much of a page-turner as his earlier works, with plenty of his trademark irreverent humor. But now his books have grown up along with his readers, exploring the issues of new adults, especially the complicated matter of love and sex.

Our Review –>

Every New Year’s Eve since 1946, Nate Meyer has ventured alone to Times Square to listen for the ghostly church bells he and his long-lost wartime lover vowed to hear together. This year, however, his grandson Blaine is pushing Nate through the Manhattan streets, revealing his secrets to his silent, stroke-stricken grandfather.
When Blaine introduces his boyfriend to his beloved grandfather, he has no idea that Nate holds a similar secret. As they endure the chilly death of the old year, Nate is drawn back in memory to a much earlier time . . . and to Walter.
Long before, in a peace carefully crafted in the heart of wartime tumult, Nate and Walter forged a loving home in the midst of violence and chaos. But nothing in war is permanent, and now all Nate has is memories of a man his family never knew existed. And a hope that he’ll finally hear the church bells that will unite everybody—including the lovers who hid the best and most sacred parts of their hearts.

  1. Thank you so much for including Fire and Water

  2. Painted Faces by L.H. Cosway (free when I purchased it) was a 5 stars read for me. I also really liked Arouse (Sprial of Bliss #1) by Nina Lane, and it's still free ;-)

  3. I'm not a fan of short stories but after I read the first book, I fell in love with Straight Guys series by Alessandra Hazard.

  4. Best freebie - Waiting, Hoping, Wishing by Nic Starr

    1. Still need to read NR Walker's new freebie :)

  5. I really loved The Last Cannoli by Tali Spencer. It didn't help with my cravings though!

  6. The Arroyo (a Love's Landscapes read)

  7. Thanks for putting "Blood and Rain" on the list!

  8. Prisoner 374215 by Angel Martinez (published last year, but I read it this year)

  9. Kaje Harpers The Family We're Born with.

  10. I'm going with books that were free for everyone, not the ones I got during Dreamspinners Tweetaways or others that were only free for a short period of time....I really enjoyed The Lodestar of Ys by Amy Rae Durreson. It was part of GoodReads 2013 Don't Read In The Closet event, but I didn't download it until February of this year.

    Trix, vitajex(at)Aol(Dot)com

  12. It is impossible to remember which of the hundreds of books I downloaded this year were free. :-o
psshepherd ( at) earthlink (dot) net

  13. Also a Love's Landscape Story: His by Jack L. Pyke

  14. Five Dates by Amy Jo Cousins

  17. I've read so many this year! I can't remember which were free.

  18. I'm pretty sure it was one of the freebies from Jay Northcote and Cardeno C.

  20. Remnant by Jordan L Hawk and KJ Charles

  21. Count Your Blessings by Amelia Mann. That one just stands out the most to me but I really enjoyed pretty much every single story in the Goodreads Don't Read In The Dark event this year. Lots of really really great stories in the bunch!!

  22. I really enjoyed Consorting With Dragons by Sera Trevor, Too Pretty by Ren Stjerne, and Starlight and Constellation: Gemini by Alexis Woods. I'm really sorry that Alexis Woods' story didn't reach a wider audience, because it was such an excellent story. Unlike most of the Love's Landscapes stories, it was only available directly from the author (because the content was very controversial). There were a lot of amazing free reads this year, for which I am truly grateful.

  23. Like one of the other commenters, I've read so many I can't possibly remember what was free & what I've purchased, but I've enjoyed all the Love's Landscapes stories I've read so far.
