We are delighted to welcome Hayley B. James to Sinfully today. As someone who has a great appreciation for music, I love to hear how music inspires some authors. Read on to find out which tunes had a significant impact on Hayley B. James when writing Undercover Addiction.
A Word from Hayley B. James
Thank you for hosting the Undercover Addiction release tour! Today I’m going to discuss some songs that were on my playlist during most of the writing sessions for this novel. Any art can be influenced by another form of art. Music can inspire authors and help shape a manuscript.
While coming up with Connor’s character, "This Is Gospel" by. Panic! At The Disco had just come out and helped shape my early version of Connor. Some of the influence remained. During the course of the story, Connor begins to lose his grasp on his cover alias. The smallest slip could expose him and get him killed. Throughout the novel Connor is aware that his relationship with Riley shouldn’t happen and has no chance of lasting anyway. Riley is a wanted criminal, and as a detective, Connor could never fall in love with Riley...and if he does, he’d lie.
“If you love me let me go
‘Cause these words are knives that often leave scars
The fear of falling apart
And truth be told, I never was yours”
Another song I’d need to include on an Undercover Addiction soundtrack is “Nicotine” also by Panic! At The Disco. This song influenced a line from Riley about addiction and Connor so it’s fitting to include it, but also it has a fantastic view on being the first to leave a failing relationship—which someone does try to do at one point. Connor and Riley are drawn together despite Connor’s constant reminding that their relationship shouldn’t have started. It’s something Connor knows is bad for him, but he wants Riley regardless.
“I taste you on my lips and I can't get rid of you
So I say damn your kiss and the awful things you do
It's better to burn than to fade away
It's better to leave than to be replaced
I'm losing to you, baby, I'm no match
Just one more hit and then we're through ‘cause you could never love me back
Cut every tie I have to you ‘cause your love's a fucking drag
But I need it so bad”
The last one I’ll mention is "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic. This one is pretty self-explanatory since Connor struggles about his enjoyment of undercover work—about how he almost prefers it to his regular life.
“I feel something so right by doing the wrong thing
And I feel something so wrong by doing the right thing
I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive”
Music is a big part of my writing routine. I enjoy silence as well, but sometimes the muses need that extra push of listening to one song a hundred times during a writing period. It isn’t always about the lyrics—often the feeling from the music itself can open new thoughts about a character or plotline.
If you’ve read Undercover Addiction, do you agree with the songs I’ve chosen? Do you have any recommendations for me? Leave a comment here or tweet me: https://twitter.com/HayleyB_James

Working Vice for the Seattle PD, Connor Bishop’s favorite part of the job is going undercover. His current assignment is to get close to Riley Drapeau, a human trafficker backed into a corner by the FBI and turned informant. Connor needs to milk him for information on his organization, but while doing so, sees an entirely different Riley than he expected.
Caught off balance, Connor relies heavily on Lucas, his outside man and only link to the real world, but he gets sucked in by Riley and his attempt to clear his name and prove his partners fabricated evidence to frame him.
Up to his eyeballs in the dark world of trafficking, Connor finds it easier to believe Riley than what the FBI is saying, especially when a leak is uncovered within the Bureau. The choices Connor has to make become even more difficult when Lucas admits he has feelings for him and promises a safe life far from harm. But Connor can’t deny the only man he wants to be with is Riley. Which forces him to decide if his addiction to the dangerous side of life can include loving a criminal.

Connor’s eyes had adjusted to the lighting. There wasn’t enough to make out many details, but he could see Riley’s lips pulled up into a relaxed smile. Connor put his hand over Riley’s on the back of the couch and smoothed his touch up Riley’s arm to the collar of his white shirt.
Riley was a monster. He admitted to viewing humans as things to be bought, sold, and used. His soul was blackened by the cruelty he believed to be normal. Connor knew it was in his best interest to keep his distance, but he couldn’t fight the urge to touch the darkness Riley harbored.
Curling his fingers around the expensive fabric, Connor forced Riley to bend down. He found Riley’s mouth and kissed him. The initial slight resistance immediately vanished. Riley held the back of Connor’s head and leaned into the embrace.
Desire raced through Connor. It was different from the times before. Connor knew what Riley was now, and being far from help placed him at Riley’s mercy. Sex shouldn’t have been on his mind, and Connor knew he knew better, but the thrill of playing with danger mixed with his lust and created an undeniable thirst.
Riley climbed over the back of the couch and straddled Connor, without parting too far from his lips. Connor moved with him, reclining when Riley pressed him down. Riley slipped his hand beneath Connor’s shirt and up his chest and used his other hand to thumb open his jeans.
“I want you,” Riley whispered against his neck.
