New York City’s streets are more dangerous than ever with the leaderless Order of Adrasteia and the Ikelos Coalition, a newly immerged Therian group, at war. Innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire and although the THIRDS round up more and more members of the Order in the hopes of keeping the volatile group from reorganizing, the members of the Coalition continue to escape and wreak havoc in the name of vigilante justice.
Worse yet, someone inside the THIRDS has been feeding the Coalition information. It’s up to Destructive Delta to draw out the mole and put an end to the war before anyone else gets hurt. But to get the job done, the team will have to work through the aftereffects of the Therian Youth Center bombing. A skirmish with Coalition members leads Agent Dexter J. Daley to a shocking discovery and suddenly it becomes clear that the random violence isn’t so random. There’s more going on than Dex and Sloane originally believed, and their fiery partnership is put to the test. As the case takes an explosive turn, Dex and Sloane are in danger of losing more than their relationship.

Macky’s Review

Rack & Ruin

Finally! The much anticipated book three of the 'Thirds' series and it's still motoring along with its mix of laugh out loud humour, all out action and steamingly sexy romance, all thanks to its cast of extremely loveable characters, Charlie Cochet's very easy writing style (she could write the phone book and make it entertaining) and those edge of your seat 'to be continued' endings that have you salivating for more. Warning! prepared for a huge "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!" moment at the end of this one, because Charlie's done it again; left us hanging on a nail biting finale and some highly emotional threads that are going to majorly influence all our favourite couples in the THIRDS unit...Dex and Sloane, Ash and Cael and Calvin and Hobbs.

The conflict between the humans and Therians, thats been playing out over the course of the series as its connecting thread, is still raging on in the background. The vigilante Therians who have formed 'The Ikelos Coalition' are still fighting the remaining members of 'The Order of Adrasteia': a league of humans dead set against the Humanitherian community, and things are hotting up even more in that area, as unfortunately it's come to the THIRDS attention that there's a mole in their ranks. Someone close to them is passing important info to the Coalition, which gets even more problematic in this instalment as some killings they're sent to investigate lead them to yet another organised gang of humans, whose heinous activities against the Therians in the far past, end up putting Destructive Delta and all the other THIRDS units in even more danger than usual!

But as important as all that is to the story, this particular book for me was definitely all about the feels! The general plotting, world building and ongoing storyline are all cleverly utilised and keep the interest going, but there's no doubt the real stars of this series are as always its main characters who we've all grown to love because of their vibrancy on page and massive likeability factor. The camaraderie and affection that Charlie manages to portray so convincingly between them, pulls you into their world ...making you wish you were part of it all. The banter, the good natured teasing, the jokey's all so engaging you can tangibly feel the closeness they share as a crack team, and the chemistry they share, not just as separate couples but as a 'totally committed to the cause' unit, and that's what personally brings me back for more.

As the main love interest couple, Dex and Sloane get centre stage again and even though Sloane has a few skittish moments, I loved the progression they make in this, as we get to see a softer, more loving side to their partnership. The sex is still as hot and passionate as ever but you can see that even though it's an important part of their relationship, it's not just a sexual attraction any more; emotionally they're much closer and their connection as partners now, both in the unit and a couple outside of it, is strengthened because of it.

Of course we also have the other guys relationships playing out alongside theirs, but things aren't quite so harmonious in either of those two camps. Like I said; this is all about the feels, and emotions are running high all round when the book opens. While Sloane and Dex's romance is getting stronger and more solid, the other two couples seem to be suffering a setback. Something is going on between Calvin and Hobbs relationship, there's tension and we don't know why? But the biggest change is between Cael and the man he has feelings for—Ash—who is being a total dick with the young Cheetah Therian. The dynamics between those two have really been mouth-wateringly good, especially since it's not clear where Ash's true sexual leaning lies. Cael wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to the grumpy lion shifter and generally seems to be the only one (apart from Sloane his best friend) who Ash shows any genuine affection for...or that used to be case! Now it's as if that 'friendship' had never happened and poor Cael is left uncertain where he stands with the stupid, stubborn SOB! Omg! I want their story so bad: especially after seeing how their relationship is left hanging at the end of Rack & Ruin! Why? You'll find out when you get pulled back into the lives and loves of Destructive Delta...and if you've not met any of these guys yet; WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!? Hahahaha....

I felt so sorry for Cael, as there's no explanation for Ash's obtuse behaviour. In fact non of the gang can figure out why he's even more moody and snappy than before—not even his bestie Sloane, the one person he confides in, whose poignant, past history with Ash connects them as closely as if they were brothers, and because we get a deeper look into their past at the facility it gave me a better insight into why sometimes they both act the way they do and why for both of them, giving themselves fully in a relationship isn't always an easy option. Didn't stop me wanting to slap a certain person though!

The first half of the story seemed to be more about establishing the emotional highs and lows between the guys, then in the second half the action kicked in and it went into high gear again. What happens from then on becomes a mixture of the two. While investigating the mole and dealing with the Coalitions goings-on; revelations come to light that have a huge impact on everyone on the team in more ways than one and we're back in that edge of the seat situation that Charlie always manages to slot in...the one that leads into the calm before the storm finish. And boy what a storm we're left feeling battered by!

I have to be honest, even though the very ending did leave me reeling, I did see certain things coming and that took away from some of the bombshell moments a tad for me. Plus, even though we see them in Therian form, I still wish we had a bit more shifter action, I sometimes think that side is a little underused, although there's one scene involving one 'not so cocky' bad guy and a set of big, growly, angry cats, that had me fist pumping and we do get to meet another really cool character though, who I liked a lot, Austen Payne: a cheeky Cheetah, Dex-like character, who has a crush on Sloane. If Charlie does give us more of him, I can see Austen becoming a bit of a favourite, and if his reluctant pairing gets expanded in future books with Osmond 'Zach' Zachary: the bear shifter from Alpha Sleuth in Beta Unit, who had Dex dangling from his ankles during Cheesy- Doodlegate, there might be another romance on the horizon? I sort of hope so because I can see that being an interesting hook up.

So, wrapping up I can't deny I had a fabulous time reading Rack & Ruin. And that's what it's all about. I love these guys because it's pure, unadulterated entertainment with such an easy style that time flies by without realising, it's the sort of series that becomes addictive because, let's be honest, it's never a chore reading about kick ass, shifter hotties and the lucky guys who catch them. You get grabbed by the short and curlies and that's it...unless there's a pesky plague of locusts....or kindle hating Martians decide to's hard to put these books down, and if it stays that way for the rest of the series then I'm definitely in for the ride, right to the very end. Another THIRDS winner!
