In the frozen expanses of remote Alaska, Dixon Rowe is a good man and a good cop who keeps finding himself in bed with the enemy. After he picks up a young ex-con named Jaye Larson for stealing food, Dixon gets seduced by the possibility of helping someone truly in need. Though he tells himself he’s assisting young Jaye out of the goodness of his heart, not because of how sexy Jaye is under all of the tattoos and defiance, the temptations of sin entangle them as their hostile environment threatens. Both of their pasts are filled with malicious ghosts that haunt every step, and while Jaye’s demons are less tangible that Dixon’s, they are all powerful enough to put both of their lives in danger. (M/M)
“You regret driving me home, don’t you?” Jaye observed without inflection. It sounded too tired, too worn-out to be coming from someone barely out of their teens. It made Dixon really fucking sad. “You wish you’d never laid eyes on me. I can see it in your face. Every bit of it. It’s okay. I actually get that a lot.”
Dixon never knew, really, why he did it. Maybe it was guilt, or the pathetic sight of those canned peas and potato chip bags lying on muddy snow. Maybe it was the absence of youth or happiness in that awful smile. Maybe it was pheromones or loneliness. Or maybe it was the ache of his recently broken heart and the raw wound brought of being left behind to suffer, time and time again, only to finally try to break free and wind up with not much else besides fear of being pursued to keep him warm at night. Maybe it was a lot of things, or none of them at all.
Before Jaye could anticipate it, Dixon was kissing him. With a small, hungry grunt, Dixon caught those dark, luscious lips that tasted so sweet and salty, too. Jaye’s mouth was warmer and softer than Dixon imagined it would be. Once he was kissing it, he didn’t want to stop. He licked the taste of French fries from the silky flesh, weaving his fingers greedily through touchable long hair, liking the small, firm, lithe feel of Jaye in his arms.
Gathering Jaye up with a hand to his lower back, Dixon pressed down for more. All he knew was the hot, wet, supple willingness of Jaye’s lips and tongue as he opened up without any fight at all and took Dixon right in. One moment Dixon’s tongue was sliding over Jaye’s sinful, suckable lips and twisting with his tongue—Jaye who, not an hour earlier, Dixon thought was a teenager and was wearing his handcuffs.
The next moment, Dixon was breaking off all contact between them as cleanly, precisely, and cold as the blade that seemed to have speared right through Jaye’s side.
The rejection in the action made hurt flare up so strong and powerfully in Jaye’s expression he bowed his head to hide instantly threatening tears. They shone wet on his dark eyelashes. He pushed his hands back into his pants pockets. Dixon watched him close up. Shoulders hunched, Jaye waited there like he was bracing for the sound of the door slamming, the receding crunch of footsteps, and the starting of the Expedition’s engine.
Dixon didn’t give him that. He didn’t leave, or make it easy like he could have and should have.
“I’m sorry about that. That was… completely out of line.”
Jaye ignored it and took a couple of limping steps sideways so he could take hold of the door’s edge, ready to close it on Dixon and the biting arctic air he brought in with him. Wishing Jaye would look up, knowing pride wouldn’t let him, Dixon stared helplessly at someone so seemingly abandoned by the world that it made Dixon furious.
