4 “The Darkness Within” Stars
The Scars That Define Us is book two in M.N. Forgy’s The Devil’s Dust series and it is also the continuation of Dani and Shadow’s turbulent tale of betrayal, lust and love. These two broken and skewed individuals continue fighting against their own inner turmoil and are haunted by their tragic pasts which ultimately caused their downfall. With no trust there, how can you move forward? Sometimes what our hearts long for the most are the things that we must fight for the hardest.
“I realize why I can’t have Prince Charming; I’ve fallen in love with the villain.”
After being betrayed by her mother and ending up in her venomous clutches, Dani is finally able to break free. The problem is she now has nowhere to go. Realizing that she may be walking into the hands of people who want her dead, she returns to the Devil’s Dust MC, the only place that has ever felt like home for her. Despite the fact that her father is the President, Dani is not exactly welcomed back with open arms. She is questioned and essentially shunned by the people she once considered her friends and family. Dani’s heart longs for Shadow but she is not holding on to any hope of ever rekindling the flame that once burned bright between them. Dani is in a dark and lonely place but she is determined to prove herself and embrace the darkness that continuously threatens to consume her soul. She is determined to prove her loyalty to the Devil’s Dust, her father and Shadow.
“I’ve never understood forgiveness, never cared if someone trusted me, never needed to, until her.”
Ever since Dani left betraying him and his MC brethren, Shadow has been drowning. His only solace is consuming copious amounts of drugs and trying to lose himself in women. Nothing seems to be working to calm the inner turmoil and rage he feels. The only person that has been able to do this is a green-eyed beauty who betrayed him. When Dani comes back into the Devil’s Dust MC fold Shadow is unsure how long he will be able to keep her at a distance. Can they both find their way to forgiveness? Will they be able to push forward and forge a new path into the future? Can they take a chance on each other once again? With so much standing in their way such as more danger and more betrayals, will falling into each other’s arms again be the trigger for their destruction or absolution?
This second book about Dani and Shadow was definitely an enjoyable read. Like the first book, it had a bite of edginess to it that added to setting the scene for a dark and violent biker world. I did love how Shadow and Dani found their way back to one another against all odds. They both are not exactly poster-children for the sane and the healthy-minded. Despite the fact that they are both more than a little messed up, they somehow seem to balance each other out and find peace in one another. They once again find themselves taking a risk on one another which only endeared them further to me. It may be a rough road when it comes to trusting one another again; however, they both are willing to admit that what they feel for each other is profound and something worth fighting for. This author once again throws a few surprises at us, some of which I saw coming while others were indeed a shocking revelation.
All in all, The Scars That Define Us is a great second novel by M.N. Forgy in this series. I was a little unsure whether a second book about Dani and Shadow was even necessary and whether the entirety of their story could have been told in one book. When a second book about a same couple comes into the mix I often find it filled with superfluous and unnecessary ramblings. This was not the case with this book. I think this author does a wonderful job continuing the story of Dani and Shadow and also gives us something new and fresh. A wonderful read overall. Again, M.N. Forgy has written a fantastic book for lovers of the biker MC genre.
“Mine and Dani’s relationship is no love story with some happily ever after. What we have is real. It’s dark and it hurts.”
