She may have her own dangerous secrets, but she can’t ignore the urgent heat between them any more than he can. As a killer’s quest for vengeance explodes into violence, Adam is tempted to lose himself in the delicious promise of her body—until he realizes he’ll risk anything if she’ll give him her heart…in Sweeter than Sin by Shiloh Walker.
Sweeter Than Sin is book two in Shiloh Walker’s Secrets & Shadows series. The first book in this series marked my first venture into the literary world of this author and it was a book that I enjoyed very much. This book continues the intricate story that this author seems to be weaving in this series. I would highly recommend reading this series in order. Like its predecessor, this book is a complex and multi-layered romantic suspense novel set in a picturesque small town. Since old skeletal remains were found and some dark secrets came into the light the small Ohio town has been turned inside-out and shattered. With an unexpected return and a killer who is out for vengeance running loose, the town of Madison continues to be upturned. I once again thoroughly enjoyed this suspense-filled book and Ms. Walker does a phenomenal job keeping her reader guessing. I was thoroughly enthralled as more layers surrounding the said mystery are slowly peeled away leaving some further shocking truths out in the open and more dead bodies.
Adam Bruscam began a downward spiral when his friend, Lana, disappeared long ago leaving him to discern what her last two puzzling phone calls actually meant. Adam is a tortured soul plagued by his past and questions that remain unanswered. For a while this caused him to turn to the bottle to help him cope as well as turn to any willing woman who could help him chase away his demons and the pain, even if it was only for a few forgettable hours. Adam has long stopped turning to the bottle as the answer to all of his problems but his lust for women has yet to be curbed. Well, until recently that is. His mind seems to be on the shocking revelations that have come to light in his home town of Madison as well as his recent close call with death. When a mysterious woman comes into his bar one evening, Adam is unprepared for the return of the one person he has been unable to forget, even after twenty long years.
Lana Rossi left the town of Madison twenty years ago after discovering some dark and twisted secrets taking place in there. The details of her last night in Madison are murky and unclear; however, she left thinking that the horrors being committed would be stopped. After reading some recent headlines in the newspaper, Lana discovers that nothing actually ended after she left. She realizes that she has to return. Lana needs to make sense of all that has happened and hopes to bring justice to those who deserve it. Upon her return Lana comes face to face with Adam, the best friend she had to leave behind. Someone who still makes her heart skip a beat
And who now makes her skin burn with desire.
“But then again, some part of her had always belonged to Adam. He’d been her first crush. He’d been her confidant. He’d been her closest friend, for the longest time.”
“Lana was his weakness, his drug, his cure, his strength. His poison.
As Lana attempts to put together all the missing pieces from her last moments in Madison, her and Adam move into the unchartered territory of lust and desire, something both of them are having a hard time ignoring. However, there is a killer on a rampage, an explosion of violence and it is becoming increasingly clearer that more secrets are waiting to be exposed. There is no denying that Lana and Adam had a profound, deeply rooted connection going back to when they were teens. With this being stated, I will note that this book (and this series thus far) is very focused on the suspense and mystery. Due to this, the romantic storyline does often take a back seat to the overall story arc. At times I would have liked to see a little more romance in this book. After all, I am a romance loving junkie. I did, however, find myself completely immersed in the mystery storyline and fascinated with how this was all going to turn out for our hero and heroine. There was so much going on that the author obviously had to spend copious amounts of time setting up all the elements that formulated the nail-biting suspense story arc. Because of this, I do think that the romance lacked a little. I still loved Adam and Lana and definitely wanted them to get their HEA; however, I will say that I was more invested in discovering what the heck was going on more.
All in all, Sweeter Than Sin is another wonderfully dark and suspenseful tale in this series that takes you into the sleepy hallow of Madison, Ohio. This is a town cloaked in dangerous and dark secrets and there is more to come. So many questions remain unanswered. The next book, Darker Than Desire, is due to be released in March 2015. I am most definitely looking forward to what else this author has in store for her reader.
“I think right now the one thing you need to do is sleep, darlin’.” He nuzzled her neck, pressing his lips where it curved into her shoulder. “It’s late and you never look like you sleep as well as you should. Tomorrow is soon enough for you to worry about how somebody else’s tragedy has to ruin your life.”
“It’s already ruined mine.” Slowly, she turned around and lifted her hands, curling them in the soft, worn material of his shirt, pressing her head against his chest. The smell of him flooded her head. Warm man, something spicy—the soap he wore or aftershave—she liked it. Rubbing her cheek against him, she murmured, “It’s ruined my life for years and I’m tired of it. I don’t want to let it ruin my life anymore. That’s why I’m trying to figure out what to do next.”
“I already told you. Sleep.” He rubbed his lips against hers and then said quietly, a thread of steel in his voice, “Tomorrow, we find answers. For now, though…”
He slid his hands down her back, cupped them around her hips. He boosted her up and when she twined her legs around him, it was a sweet, sweet bliss. “Maybe the answer to that is think about you. You’ve lived your life day by day, always thinking about keeping your secrets. We need to figure out how you can reclaim your life, but you can’t do that in the dead of night. So for now…think about you. What you need.”
He dipped his head and caught her lower lip between his, bit her lightly.
“What do you need?”
A slow shudder wracked her body and he decided he liked it. As he lifted his head to peer down into her eyes, she stared up at him, her eyes cloudy and heated. “Are you suggesting that maybe the answer to this lies in getting naked?”
