♥ Synopsis ♥
The calm before the storm…
I lived in the quiet stillness.
I felt the wind rustle, warning me, telling me to get out of its path.
But I didn’t.
I never stood a chance.
A series of weather and road mishaps leaves me trapped in the middle of a blizzard with a complete stranger. In the back of a pickup truck. For forty-eight freakin’ hours.
A stranger with long hair, tattoos, and rippling with muscle.
A stranger with an insanely sexy voice and a wicked smile that turned my insides to jelly.
A stranger who held me in his arms, calmed me, and then set a fire in me that I couldn’t put out.
Storm lives up to his name. Beautiful. Dangerously inviting. Tumultuous. Dark. A clash of hot and cold.
He’s used to getting everything he wants.
And now he wants me.
Some people chase storms for the beautiful thrill. What happens when the storm chases you?
♥ Lisa’s Review ♥
"Sometimes, the right person comes along at the wrong time, and you have to just trust fate and hope it leads you in the right direction and it all evens out."
Storm by Carian Cole is book one in her series entitled Ashes & Embers. This is a great debut novel that had me smiling, frustrated, giddy and happily sighing. It’s about taking a chance, stepping out of your comfort zone and no longer playing it safe. Sometimes it takes a tumultuous storm to rip us from the safe bubble of comfort we have grown accustomed to. It is then up to us to determine whether you seek shelter once again or begin to dance in the rain.
Evelyn is on her way to a business meeting having to drive through a snowy blizzard when she loses control of her vehicle and ends up crashing into an embankment. With no cell service and no way of determining exactly where she is, Evelyn is stranded. That is until a mysterious and huge stranger with long-hair comes to her rescue. She is reluctant to accept any help from him despite his assurance that he can get her safely out of the blizzard and into a warm shelter seeing that his cabin is close and he was on his way there. Unfortunately, they never make it to the cabin, at least not right away. The pair get into another accident leaving them stranded in the blizzard with nothing but a blanket, a big goofy dog and some food. All they can do is wait it out.
Storm Valentine is on his way to his cabin for a much needed reprieve from his crazy life. He wants to a break, even if it will only be for a few days. When the car in front of him slides off the road and crashes, Storm can’t just drive by without going to the person’s aid. What he did not expect was a sassy, spit-fire who has no idea who he is and is giving him attitude despite the fact that he is rescuing her. Fate has other plans and the two of them end up stuck in his truck riding out the snow storm. Storm and Evelyn spend a couple of days together often goading one another but also opening up and letting the other in. When it is time for Evelyn to return home, Storm can’t help but want more with her. They both feel a strong connection to one another. The question becomes whether Evelyn is willing to give Storm a chance?
The first part of the book, being stranded in the snow storm, was great. Evelyn’s reaction to Storm was so comical.
“Excuse me…Are you wearing eyeliner?”
He rolls his eyes and shrugs. “Never mind that. Let’s just go already.” He puts his sunglasses back on.
I can’t let it go. “Are you some kind of cross-dresser or something?”
“Fuck to the no.”
“Maybe he’s a Twilight fan? Good lord, I hope not.”
After Evelyn goes back to her real life and Storm returns to his they continue to be friends even though Storm wants so much more. At this point Evelyn did grate on my nerves. She was so hesitant about everything and I hated how she was so blind to the truth. I did understand her reluctance to get involved with Storm at first, especially once she discovered who he truly was. However, Storm proves himself over and over again and Evelyn still ends up doubting his feelings and his intentions toward her. I did want to drop-kick her a few times.
"I just knew, sitting in the truck with you in my lap, that this was it. I figured we were either going to die together back there or get out and be together forever. I don't question feelings like that."
Storm was a wonderful character that had me swooning right from the get go. He knew what he wanted and he was very honest and direct. I loved that. I also admired the fact that he let Evelyn get there on her own. Sure there were moments where he had to nudge her in the right direction and show her just how profound their attraction was for one another (“I want to fuck you stupid and watch you come undone and then fuck you back together again.”); but, Storm did leave the decision in Evelyn’s hands. She ultimately had to be the one to decide if she would take a chance on a relationship with him.
"How can you have a beautiful ending without making beautiful mistakes?"
This entire book is told from Evelyn’s POV. I did enjoy that but I would have loved to get a few chapters in Storm’s POV. He was such an intriguing character and I would have enjoyed getting into his head. Also, going into this book I had no idea that “an obstacle” in her way when it came to being with Storm. I did not mind this angle; however, I wish that the resolution would have occurred much sooner in this book. I would have loved to see Storm and Evelyn together for a lot longer. It definitely would have cemented their relationship in my mind a lot more.
All in all, Storm was definitely a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am excited about the rest of this series. Carian Cole introduced some very intriguing characters and I can’t wait to see them get their story. I would certainly recommend this book!

The snow is supposed to stop tonight or tomorrow. I can’t wait to get out of here, and take a
nice hot shower, sleep in a nice warm bed, eat some real food and see Michael and Halo.
Storm thinks a plow truck will come by tomorrow at some point, and he plans to chase after
it when he hears it. I’m a little bit nervous about that. What if the plow doesn’t come?
According to Storm, not many people even drive on this road. The plow guy could put off
doing this road for a day or two.
“Storm? Is anyone looking for you?”
He pushes his hair out of his face and stares at me. “Why would someone be looking for
“Because you’re missing? Duh.”
“I’m not missing, Evie. I’m hiding.”
I turn in the seat to face him. “Hiding? What do you mean?”
“I told you. I was coming up to my cabin to get away from everyone. They all know not
to bother me. They know I won’t answer my phone. So no one knows I’m stranded in the
“What? Are you serious? We could die out here, Storm. What if the truck doesn’t come
I burst into tears before I can stop myself. He scoots over and puts his arm around me,
puts his hand on my head, guiding me to rest on his shoulder. “Shh... it’s gonna be okay. I
promise. You’re just tired and a little stir crazy. I promise I’ll get us out of here. Don’t cry.”
He pulls my head up and wipes my tears away with his thumbs. Holy damn, his eyes are
green like a cat. “Evelyn, I know it’s hard but we have to keep our shit together, okay? I’ll get
us out of here. Just trust me.” I nod, mesmerized by his eyes. I can barely hear him speaking.
“Your eyes are amazing.”
He laughs and hands me a tissue. “Well, thanks. Are you okay? Don’t be having a fucking
meltdown on me, okay?”
I blow my nose a little and wipe at my eyes. “I’m sorry. I just want to go home.”
“We’ll get you home soon. I’m sure your family and Michael are missing you a lot. And
I blink back the tears and shake my head at him. “I don’t have any family, Storm. Just
Michael and Halo.”
“All right, baby. I get it.” He keeps his arm around me, and I rest my head on his
shoulder again. I soon fall asleep listening to the rhythm of his heartbeat.
