♥ Synopsis ♥
The New York Times and USA Today bestselling Marked Men series continues with this sizzling, sexy story of love, heartbreak, fate, and second chances.
After the only girl he ever loved told him that he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and set out to live up to his nickname. A good ol’ boy looking for good times and good friends, Rowdy refuses to take anything too seriously, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Burned by love once, he isn’t going to let himself trust a woman again. But that’s before his new co-worker arrives, a ghost from the past who’s suddenly making him question every lesson he ever learned.
Salem Cruz grew up in house with too many rules and too little fun—a world of unhappiness she couldn’t wait to forget. But one nice thing from childhood has stayed with her; the memory of the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been head over heels in love with her little sister.
Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.
Cora interviewing Rome
Cora: Are you staring at my boobs?
Rome: Is that your first question, because you know I am.
Cora with a major eye roll in his direction: You are such a guy.
Rome with a grunt: I wouldn’t be much use to you if I wasn’t. Let’s get this over and done with I have shit to do today.
Cora narrows her eyes at him: Do you have to suck the fun out of everything? Captain No-Fun in full effect.
Now he has to grin at her: So that’s question number 2 right? And no I don’t have to suck the fun out of everything…I just think my idea of fun and your idea of fun are different. Mine involves you and whole lot less clothing…and you would enjoy any opportunity you got to ask me a million questions I don’t particularly want to answer.
Cora holding up her hand: 5 questions Big Guy, not a million and it won’t kill you to play along.
Rome leaning back in his chair behind the desk that separates them in his office: It might. I know how sneaky you can be when you want to.
Cora lifts and eyebrow in appreciation when he lifts his arms up and stacks his hands behind his head: Okay so if you had to pick which color my eyes were, either the brown or the blue which one would you choose?
His eyebrows dip down pulling on that scar that stands out white on his forehead: I wouldn’t. To me you are all the colors, all the brightness, all the good things in my world. I wouldn’t want to change anything about you. I like that I can tell what’s going on in that crafty mind of yours by looking in your eyes. The blue one is always clear and honest and the brown one always lets me know when you’re up to no good.
She smiles at him and leans forward in the chair a little automatically making his eyes track the way her shirt tightens over her admittedly growing chest: See, you’re super good at this game, Rome. So does my job bother you? Does it every rub you the wrong way? I work with super-hot guys covered in ink all day and that part of what I do means I have to make random dudes drop their drawers every now and then?
Rome: Nope. You had that guy and he isn’t here, I am, so in the long run you didn’t want that. As for having to handle other men’s junk…is that my favorite…no fucking way, but it’s what you do and it doesn’t bother you so I refuse to let it bother me. I mean I could ask you the same thing, would it bother you that one of the old requirements of my job in the Army was to get shot at on a daily basis? (She stiffens automatically because anything having to do with him getting hurt is still a sore subject) Of course it would bug you, but it was my job and it had to get done.
She sighs a little and gets up and braces her hands on the desk so that she is leaning towards him: I kind of hate that you are turning out to be so good at this game just so you know. (His eyes are def. locked on the gap her position has shifted her shirt into. So she smirks at him,) It’s nice to know after some time and a kid you still look at me that way.
Cora: Sooooo…where do you see us in the next few years, Big Guy? What’s our future look like to you?
Rome gets to his feet and leans over the desk so that he can put a hand around the back of her neck and pull her closer: We look like this. Happy, in love, making babies, having a family that keeps growing. We’ll get married, we’ll buy a house, we’ll watch all of our friends and family do the same…including Asa even if I have to hold him down and force what is right in front of him down his throat. Our future is me and you and whatever we want from it, Half-Pint.
She laughs a little and lets him pull her forward for a kiss that is def. more fun than asking each other questions.
Cora: Rome for the win.
Rome: Absolutely. I ended up with you didn’t I?
