We are delighted to welcome Jude Dunn to the blog today… he has very kindly popped in to tell about the inspiration behind his latest novel One Thing Leads.
I’m Jude Dunn, and One Thing Leads my new novel, is rather dark. That’s an understatement, really. Dion, the main character, is led away from his lover down a path that ends in enslavement in a literal sense. Can you imagine being faced with blackmail that can only be avoided by signing your life away as a prostitute, your body sold nightly for the profit of a man you thought was your friend? Where in the world does the inspiration for such a tale come from?
First things first. Here’s a synopsis, after which I’ll answer the question of inspiration, which may be kind of questionable (you’ll see what I mean). Below that you’ll find a bio of yours truly and some linkage for your viewing pleasure (including the requisite excerpt, and freebies, and “please buy me!” clickables).

What makes a young man go further than he ever thought he would?
Dion Bellamy is twenty-seven and studying social work at the University of Chicago. He has lived with Kenji Okamura, a construction worker, for a year and a half. Dion loves Kenji and passionately hopes Kenji feels the same, but he has never said the three big words. Then Grayson Sinclair, Dion’s schoolmate and a vivacious, oversexed playboy, comes between them.
One step at a time, barely aware where his steps are leading, Dion descends the slippery slope into a life of depravity. First, Grayson ensures Kenji is out of the way. Then he entices Dion to go clubbing with him, gets Dion drunk and high, and then takes him to a sex club, where he films Dion giving blow jobs to multiple men. He threatens to put the video online unless Dion signs a contract to work as a prostitute. Though he hardly understands how he reached this point, Dion must now figure out how to escape his fate and save himself

Be Still, My Beating Heart
One Thing Leads by Jude Dunn will take your heart on a roller coaster ride.
You call that inspiration?
I question the idea that One Thing Leads is inspired only because the subject matter is on the depravity side of life. We tend to think of inspiration as related to good things, not bad. Webster’s tells us that “inspiration” is all about divine influence that qualifies special people to receive sacred revelations. Inspired people move the emotions, and we usually think of that in a good, not bad, way. So where did the idea for One Thing Leads come from?
In this case, I like the word “fascination” rather than inspiration. I’m a geek-nerd, and that means I’m fascinated with what makes us humans do the things we do. Why in the world would you let someone take you down a road that might end in a trap? What blinds a person to where that next step could lead?
Don’t interpret my refusal to use the term “inspiration” to mean there’s no emotional power in One Thing Leads There’s plenty of that, more than enough to get your heart and other vital body parts pumping strong.
If you're fascinated with what draws a person down a dark road and how love can pull them back, then One Thing Leads is a must-read. But hang onto your heart. It's in for a roller coaster of a ride full of sex, intrigue, and love.
