Under a Crescent Moon by Mercy Celeste
Rating ~ 5 Stars
Murder, mystery, sex and magic. It’s just another typical night under a crescent moon…
New Orleans Police Detective Taylor Campbell has done his best to leave Xander Cooper alone. Years ago, he joined the Army to get away from the temptation of the younger man. But a series of murders around Xander’s restaurant has Taylor running scared. And when he happens upon Xander holding off a group of thugs, his honour is forgotten.
Xander Cooper fell in love with Taylor when he was a teen. Now an adult, he’s waited and watched and hoped that Taylor would one day see him as more than a little kid meant to be avoided. He didn’t expect murder to bring Taylor to his bed. For Xander, giving Taylor his heart is easy. Letting him in on the family secret is another thing all together.
He didn’t expect that Taylor would have secrets of his own. Secrets that make a little thing like Xander being a witch seem tame…
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of violence, rough sex, mild BDSM, dubious consent and cheating.
Macky’s Quick Bite
Full of angst, misunderstands and more dark, delicious drama than you can shake a stick at. I was totally gripped in this story of witches, cops, magic and dark family secrets! Set in New Orleans with a slightly different paranormal slant to it, it suited the atmosphere of the story perfectly! Mercy Celeste threw me into a plot that included dub con, violence, BDSM, murder, secrets and lies and whatever else you can chuck in that would make this as far away from your common or garden, sweet romance as you could get!
And I ABSOLUTELY loved it!! There was a magnetic pull between its MC's Xander and Taylor that oozed chemistry, and sizzled with yummy sexual tension and that in turn created some hot, passionate, lust filled love scenes... something Ms Celeste is soooo good at. I can guarantee that there will be times when the actions of both MC's will have you tearing your hair out, stomping your feet and wanting to throw your Kindle in exasperation, but that didn't stop me from wanting the two of them to make it together...warts an' all. I practically snorted this book when I read it in one interrupted sitting. I guess in retrospect it's a book that you will either love or you won't, but it's made its way into my keepers with a promise of many a re-read to come. It's love all the way for me!!
Fire Horse by Mickie B. Ashling
Rating ~ 5 Stars
Preston Fawkes is ten the first time he meets fifteen-year-old Konrad Schnell at the San Antonio Polo Club. Captivated by the mystique surrounding the sport of kings, Pres vows to learn the game at the hands of his newly acquired friend and mentor. The hero worship soon grows into something deeper, but the friends are separated when Preston goes off to boarding school in England.
The relationship that follows is riddled with challenges―their age gap, physical distance, and parental pressure taking precedence over feelings yet to be explored. Although their bond goes deep, they deal with the reality of their situation differently: Preston is open and fearless while Konrad is reticent and all too aware of the social implications of making a public stand.
Their paths intersect and twine, binding them as tightly as a cowboy’s lasso, but fate may alter their plans. How will love overcome the divots in the turf as they gallop toward the future—one where obstacles no longer stand in their way?
Monique’s Quick Bite
This is a love story that transcends time, a first love that can never be forgotten, a love that was extinguished before it had been explored to fruition… leaving a man that was bitter and angry at life, and despite his search for the last 27 years, life had never given him what he had touched so briefly as an adolescent in an affair with the boy that still held his heart.
The heart of this book is the relationship between Preston and Konrad which takes place between 1976 ~ 1983 when both boys were adolescents so if you have issues about the sexual exploration of teenagers then this book is not for you, I must say it is not crude or degrading in any way… these two boys loved each other and that is the crux of the story, it is both beautiful and heartbreaking. They both also share a love of polo but in truth, the story doesn’t revolve around the sport.
Through his teenage years I came to understand Preston’s attitude and Konrad’s reluctance and both men, although flawed had loved each other, I could sit here and say it could have been done this way or that, and criticise the actions of the characters but this is their story, they made mistakes they fucked up and got on with it and I loved their story.
Counter Point: Dylan’s Story
Rating ~ 4 Stars
At eighteen Dylan Rutledge has one obsession: music. He believes his destiny is to be the greatest composer of the rapidly approaching twentieth century. Only Laurence Northcliff, a young history master at The Venerable Bede School for Young Gentlemen, believes in Dylan's talent and encourages his dream, not realizing Dylan is in love with him. But Dylan's passion and belief in his future come at a high price. They will alienate him from his family and lead him on a rocky path fraught with disappointment, rejection, and devastating loss that kills his dream. A forbidden love could bring the dream back to life and rescue Dylan from despair and bitterness, but does he have the courage to reach out and take it? Will he deny the music that rules his soul?
Mark’s Quick Bite
Counterpoint is the musical relationship of melodic lines playing independently but forming a harmonic whole. There couldn't be a more fitting title for this book. A story with many independent tales, but coming together in one grand finale. A truly enjoyable read.
It was very difficult to review this story due to it's complexity and length which is by no means a criticism but a complement as it stands out from the normal trope of m/m stories. Intricate, complex, intriguing, thought provoking and well balanced. Just like a musical score itself. This book is incredibly multi-facetted and I loved it on many levels. First the time it was set in causing a whole set of problems that we don't even consider today. Having to be totally secret about your relationship or when some people knew they really had be close and trusted friends. You don’t need to be a musical genius to enjoy this book nor is a knowledge of music necessary. Just sit back and be prepared to be taken on Dylan’s journey of trials ad tribulations where love wins in the end despite the period of history.
