Two stories so deeply intertwined, you’ll think you know how they intersect…but you’ll be wrong….
The day I met Emily Bennett my whole world changed. Sure, we were just kids, but I was old enough to know my life would never be the same. She was my best friend. My destiny. My fate. I wasn’t wrong…I just didn’t know how twisted fate could be.
After the death of my mother, moving from my dark and dreary trailer park to sunny California, I was focused on one thing – finding a sister I’d only just learned existed. Falling in love with him wasn’t part of the plan. But he filled a void I never knew was possible to fill. He had to be my fate. My destiny. Until the day I finally found out who my sister was…and how twisted fate could be.
4 “Twisted Fate” Stars!
“Maybe, just maybe, fate brought us together for a reason. To fix each other, not obliterate our already wounded hearts.”
Left Behind is a stand-alone young adult romance written by Vi Keeland and Dylan Scott. I really had no expectations going into this book. I have yet to read anything by either author so this was truly unchartered territory for me. I must say, I very much enjoyed this tale of young love. Two individuals whose lives intertwined before they ever met. When their paths finally do intersect, they both discover how twisted fate can truly be.
“How come I’m the one that got left behind?”
Growing up with a mother with bipolar disorder as well as health issues, Nikki Fallon has not exactly had an average and easygoing life. She has had to take on more responsibilities than anyone her age. However, Nikki loved her mother fiercely and her death was a tragic loss that she is having a hard time with. Not quite eighteen years of age, Nikki knows that she is going to have to deal with the foster care system until she can go out and venture on her own. When an aunt she never even knew existed appears and is willing to take her to her home in California, Nikki is more than willing to go. She has her own hidden reasons for wanting to leave Texas and go to California. She discovered a letter in her mother’s belongings that changes everything. She has a fraternal twin sister that she never knew about. Now Nikki is determined to find out the answers to her many questions and hopefully find her long lost sister.
Zach Martin is your all American gorgeous athlete who met the girl he knew he would love when he was only nine years old when she moved next door and let him ride her yellow bike. Eight years have since passed and Zach is still with Emily despite the fact that she no longer resembles the young and carefree girl he fell in love with. One night changes Zach’s life irrevocably. After months of isolating himself from everyone who cares about him, Zach meets a girl who makes him feel again. Someone who makes him see past his grief and guilt.
Nikki and Zach both spark something deep within each other. They slowly begin to bond through their mutual love of jogging and a fragile friendship develops from there soon turning into something so much more. They both understand one another. They both understand loss. As Nikki and Zach spend more time with each other, they begin to let go of pieces of their past and they both begin to fall. Fall deeply. However, Nikki is in California for a reason. She has to discover where her sister is and find the answers to all the mysteries surrounding her mother that plague her. But when the truth is finally revealed, will Nikki be prepared? Can Nikki and Zach survive when they discover just how twisted and cruel fate can truly be?
This book was definitely easy to lose myself in. Nikki and Zach were characters that were likable and easy to root for. The twists and turns in this story were not surprising to me but that does not mean I did not enjoy seeing everything play out. Told in dual POV’s, I loved watching how Nikki and Zach went from strangers to two individuals whose lives intersected so intricately and profoundly. As the story unfolded it was hard not to fall in love with these two characters who had both lost so much and yet they were still standing and trying to reach for a happy forever.
All in all, Left Behind was a romantically sweet coming of age young adult read. I do not tend to read young adult too often but this book certainly shines. Nikki and Zach experienced pain so deep that it could have irreparably crushed them; but, they pushed through and came out on the other side much stronger individuals. Sometimes life has a way of throwing a few overwhelming blows at us. In the darkness and pain is where you can often discover the light that will see you through to the other side. You can find a love that you did not even know could exist. You can find a home.
“I always knew home wasn’t a place, I just didn’t know I could find it with a person who would be so deeply raveled in my life before we ever met.”
He looks up and I watch his eyes take me in. Slowly. They rake over me, dropping from my eyes to my glossed lips down to my exposed shoulders. Taking his time, he follows the neckline of my simple, yet body contouring sundress, lingering when he reaches my full breasts. I’m sufficiently covered, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t aware that the dress showed off my assets well. Tight around my chest, gathering snuggly at the waist, with a scant amount of cleavage. Just enough coverage to still leave something for him to imagine. And I watch his face change as his imagination takes off running.
His eyes drift down my legs, tanned now from the eternal California sun. Momentarily he’s lost in what he sees and doesn’t even notice I’m watching him leer. Totally worth the extra effort getting ready tonight, I couldn’t be happier at the reaction I get. Eventually, his eyes make their way back up to mine and I arch one eyebrow, letting him know he’s been caught. A normal reaction might be to look embarrassed or perhaps even flustered a little. But not Zack. Instead, he flashes me a wicked grin. “You look incredible.” He’s the one doing the leering, yet I’m the one who ends up blushing.

About The Authors
Vi Keeland is a native New Yorker with three children that occupy most of her free time, which she complains about often, but wouldn't change for the world. She is a bookworm and has been known to read her kindle at stop lights, while styling her hair, cleaning, walking, during sporting events, and frequently while pretending to work. She is a boring attorney by day, and an exciting smut author by night!
Dylan Scott is a New York trial attorney, wife and mother of four. She believes her job as a trial attorney is a subcategory to the field of entertainment more than law. With a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature she believed teaching English was a destined career choice until she realized her life long talent of "argument" could actually be her job. A recent, fairly boring, midlife crisis resulted in a brief stint as a middle school English teacher which confirmed that she wasn't ready to give up the law. Dylan has also taught legal courses at the college level and worked with at-risk inner city youth in the roles of mentor and coach. She is co-author Vi Keeland's biggest fan.
