Title: Lay It Down (Desert Dogs, #1)
Author: Cara McKenna
Genre: Biker Romance
Release Date: August 5 2014
Backbreaking days, wild nights, and the hard hum of steel between your thighs...
That’s a life well lived, according to the Desert Dogs—four friends who call Fortuity, Nevada, their badlands home.
Vince Grossier is the self-crowned outlaw king around here. But when Fortuity’s slick new mayor invites a casino development to town, greed isn’t far behind—and it claims Vince’s good friend as its first casualty. With the law turning a blind eye to the mysterious death, Vince must seek his own brand of justice. The pretty photographer hired by the developers might be the key to uncovering the truth. And she’s a temptation too good to pass up.
Finally free of a controlling ex, Kim Paget’s not looking to be taken for a ride—not on the back of some tattooed roughneck’s bike and definitely not in his bed. But when she uncovers evidence supporting Vince’s suspicions of murder, Kim must entrust her safety to a man whose body threatens danger of a whole different kind.
4.5 “Desert Dogs” Stars!
“In a town as small as Fortuity, Nevada, nobody’s demons stayed private for long.”
Lay It Down is book one in Cara McKenna’s new series entitled Desert Dogs. I am a huge fan of this author. Essentially, anything she writes I am all over like a cheap hooker. LOL! This book marks the start of a fantastic romantic suspense series. Set in Fortuity, Nevada, this picturesque and rundown small town becomes the backdrop to death, drama and intrigue forever changing its landscape.
“Used to be I was the shadiest person in Fortuity. I’m really starting to miss those days.”
“A thug? Probably. A criminal, frequently. A caveman at times. But so big, so comfortable in who he was, a person who knew himself inside out. A force, larger than life.”
Vince Grossier, along with his younger brother and two friends (the Desert Dogs), was born and raised in Fortuity and this dilapidated small town is where he is going to stay. He may be a little rough around the edges and has served some jail time; however, when it comes the new casino development threatening to change Fortuity and its residents, Vince is not exactly happy camper. Like many of Fortuity’s native habitants, Vince would rather see the casinos of Nevada left in Las Vegas. The new casino development may bring more employment opportunities and money to Fortuity; but, it will also bring much greed and a whole lot of trouble that the town simply does not need.
When one of Vince’s good friends is found dead, Vince does not believe that the death was an accident. But, no one is taking heed to what Vince has to say about his friend’s mysterious death, Vince knows that he must take the law into his own hands and seek out the answers himself. This is easier said than done. That is, until a beautiful photographer blows into town, hired by the developers to take pictures of the construction and the town. She may be Vince’s way in to uncovering the truth about his friend.
“You’re a very unusual man.”
“You’re a very attractive woman.”
“I want you to know, you’re the most obnoxious man I’ve ever met.”
He nodded thoughtfully, looking not at all surprised. “That’s why I dialed back my usual wooing tactics.”
Kim Paget in in Fortuity not only to do the job she has been hired to do, but to also get out from under the thumb of her ass-hat of an ex-boyfriend. The last thing she needs is a gorgeous, tattooed, bad-ass eyeing her up and hitting on her. However, the more time she spends with Vince, the more she sees beneath his hard exterior and discovers a man that is not only loyal but fiercely protective of those he loves. When she discovers evidence supporting Vince’s suspicions about his friend’s death, Kim knows that she needs to help uncover the truth and trust her safety to this hard-edged biker. As matters get more intense and dangerous, so do her feelings for Vince.
“I love you.” His fingertips stroked her cheeks. “No more maybes.”
“Is overprotective Vince much different that pushy Vince, or possessive Vince?”
“Oh, he’s way worse,” he promised with a soft clap on her back and a grim smile. “But he’s real good in bed.”
The budding romance between Kim and Vince is interwoven nicely with the suspenseful plot. There is no denying that this couple felt a strong, passionate and true connection, one they wanted to explore and dive into head first (albeit cautiously at first). Kim and Vince are unable to walk away from their profound connection and find themselves hanging on to what they feel for one another with both hands. Their romance came at an inopportune time for both of them but there is no stopping matters of the heart when they begin to take hold. I found myself completely immersed in the mystery storyline and, simultaneously, also found myself rooting for a happy forever for Vince and Kim. There was so much going on that the author obviously had to spend copious amounts of time setting up all the elements that formulated the nail-biting suspense story arc but this did not hinder the romantic side of the tale at all. There was a wonderful balance of both.
All in all, Lay It Down was an amazing start to this promising series set in a distinctive small town. This book is definitely worth the read for lovers of romantic suspense. Cara McKenna does a phenomenal job providing her reader with a suspense-filled mystery and I was thoroughly enthralled as the layers surrounding the said mystery are slowly peeled away leaving some shocking truths out in the open for the first time and even more questions to be answered. I can’t wait for more!
