Lisa’s Review

5 “Sexy Grumpy Surfer” Stars

It’s in His Kiss is book ten in Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor series. I am a huge fan of this author and reading her books always feels like coming home, particularly this series. This time we are back in the quirky town of Lucky Harbor revisiting the lovable and eccentric habitants. This author seems to follow a familiar formula with many of her books; however, it is a formula that works and keeps me engrossed with the story and her beautifully developed characters. Jill Shalvis writes fantastically hilarious and witty tales, swoony romances and hot and sexy times that leave you all hot and bothered. This book is no exception. Another heart-warming gem about learning to trust in that someone special and learning to trust in love.

“Once a peeper….”

Becca Thorpe has escaped big city living and found herself in the small town of Lucky Harbor. Becca knows that she is fleeing from the pressures put on her by her family and all the stress she is dealing with, but she needs to regroup and take time for herself even if it means living in a dilapidated warehouse that has been converted to have a few living spaces. She is writing jingles for feminine hygiene products, erectile dysfunction medication and toilet paper to make ends meet and dealing with the fact that her “muse” has somehow fled. What Becca wants to do, though, is live in the moment. She wants to be carefree for once in her life even if it is temporary. When Becca meets a sexy surfer with a broody and dark demeanor, she ends up thinking she may just settle in for a while.

“You’re going to be the death of me,” he whispered against her lips.

Sam Brody is as intense and focused as they come. He did not have it easy growing up and any success he now has can be attributed to his determination and hard work. Running a boat chartering business with his two best friends and investing smartly has left Sam in a good place financially but that does not mean he is all put together when it comes to his emotional well-being. Sam has been shaped by his upbringing and his trust issues run deep. When he meets the new Lucky Harbor resident, Sam can’t help but be drawn to the beautiful brunette.

Sam and Becca share one hot, passionate and sizzling night; however, when Becca starts working for Sam’s chartering business as the receptionist and office helper, Sam is determined to stay away. He is unwilling to mix business with pleasure no matter how tempting (and willing) Becca may be. As the pair spend more and more time together, their connection only becomes stronger and they both can’t help falling for one another. When Sam’s father and Becca’s family come to Lucky Harbor, Sam and Becca are put to the test. Can Sam let go of his past enough to let love in? Will Becca be strong enough to stand up against her family and stay in Lucky Harbor instead of running back to them and trying to be the savior they have all come to depend on?

“…you came out of nowhere. I didn’t expect you, Becca.”

I loved this romantic love story. I absolutely loved Becca. She may have had issues with her family and playing music in front of others, but when it came to Sam and how she felt about him she was fearless. She was the perfect blend of feisty, smart and sweet that Sam needed to allow him to finally open up and allow someone in. Sam had this strong and broody thing going for him, but damn if it was hard not to fall head over heels for the “sexy grumpy surfer” right along with Becca. Despite his hesitations to enter into the world of love, he was so supportive and caring when it came to Becca. I adored watching these two find their way to each other in such a way that can only come from Jill Shalvis. For me, she is the queen of penning light-hearted, funny and sexy romances that have me swooning and laughing out loud. Sam and Becca’s road to happiness was real and sweet and had me transported to my happy place, somewhere only a great romance novel can take me.

All in all, It’s in His Kiss is a wonderfully executed romance by an author who has yet to let me down. This book is not bogged down with unnecessary over-the-top angst and drama. That is definitely not how Jill Shalvis books work. What you get is a sweet, fun and light-hearted love story that will leave you happily sighing and seeking out a sexy surfer of your own. Two more books left in this beloved series. So bitter sweet and yet I am anxiously awaiting to find out how Sam’s two best friends meet their match.

“I’ll be yours. And that makes you mine as well, you know. You ready for that?”

He grinned. “It’s all I ever wanted.”
