Title ~ Embracing His Syn
Author ~ A.E. Via
Published ~ 30th July 2014
Genre ~ M/M Contemporary Romance
(This story contains characters from previously published novel 'Nothing Special' but Embracing His Syn is a stand-alone novel.)
Sergeant Corbin 'Syn' Sydney transferred from the Philadelphia Police Department as soon as he'd heard there was going to be an opening on Lieutenant Cashel Godfrey and Lieutenant Leonidis Day's Atlanta Narcotics Task Force. Syn’s primary goal in his life has been to be a great cop. There has been no time for relationships, romance, or especially love.
Syn was dedicated to his new force, focused and ready to back up God and Day as their third in command, but what he wasn't ready for was the feelings he got from seeing the love they had for each other.
Syn's all prepared to accept his lonely fate until he walks into a small pub and meets long-haired,
tattooed, bartender, Furious Barkley. Before he can even understand why, Syn's feeling things he barely recognizes: passion, yearning, cravings; and if the dark, lustful gazes are anything to go by, Furious might be feeling the same things for him.
Just one thing needs to happen before Furi and Syn can give each other what’s been missing from their lives for so long...
Syn needs to allow happiness into his world and Furi needs to learn to open his heart and trust again.
God, Day, Ronowski, and Johnson are still as entertaining as ever...
You'll swoon over God's massive take-charge attitude...
You'll laugh hysterically at Day's never-ending wit...
You'll fall in love with Furious' mysterious, sexy demeanor...
You'll embrace Syn...
Disclaimer: This book DOES NOT contain scenes of polygamous sexual pairings.
So first came came God and Day, (swoon), and now we have Syn and Furious or Furi, (more swooning) in a follow up steamingly sexy tale of gruff alpha cops, their scorching hot lovers and another action based crime/murder mystery tying them altogether very nicely indeed. Throw in a jealous, abusive soon to be ex husband and his sadistic brother, drug related murders, a Lesbian extremist group, some crazy ass women porn stars and that flash of 'Day' style humour, that if you read 'Nothing Special' you'll be hard pushed not to remember without a big smile on your face, and you've got another A.E. Via sizzling special that definitely isn't a nothing!
I suppose it all breaks down to personal opinion but there's just something about her larger than life alpha men that hits my spot every time, and yes I'm including that spot, LOL, because however you feel about sex in your romances, I find that A.E really pulls off the tummy churning chemistry that triggers some awesomely memorable scenes in the sack...or against a wall...or in a back alley...or over the phone...or...well I think you get where I'm going with this train of thought, haha, but she really does tick my own boxes on that front. Yes they're sort of exaggerated, in that growly possessive "MINE!!!!" sort of way, and I guess for some they can come over a bit cheesy, with their pet names for each other—their "Baby's" "Beautiful's" and their "Darlin's", but for me it's that yummy cheese that you can't get enough of. The sort you keep going back and pinching a corner off because that last piece tasted soooo good! And then there's the dirty talk....*goes off into a daydream for a moment*
Aaaaand.... back in the room!
In a roundabout way, the underlying story for me was almost secondary really to the relationship of Syn and Furi. Don't get me wrong there's plenty going on and it's constantly unfolding in the background, becoming pretty exciting towards the end of the story when things hot up with the ex husband and I don't mean hot up in the sexy way, but my star of the show was definitely the on page antics and sexually charged anticipation between the two MC's. Right from the moment when Syn walked into the bar and made eye contact with the gorgeously lush, long haired, sexily tattooed, slim bodied hottie behind the bar (OMG! That Furious is delish!!! Got my heart pumping faster too) and the eyeballing became mutual. Then the addictive, irresistible sexual tension started....
"Say it," Syn snapped suddenly. Furious turned to look at him from the stairs of the bus. "Say what?" "My name damnit." "Why?" Furious almost whispered. "Because I want to hear it from your mouth." Syn's voice had gone gravelly. He was being honest. He did want to hear it. Now. Later. And ten octaves higher. Ricocheting off his bedroom walls. Hell.
"No," Furious replied, turned and got on the bus.
The thing is that once again, like God in the first book, Syn is a character who's sexuality really is ambiguous. He definitely isn't straight. We know that by the feelings we're told he's had for an ex male roommate, who even though they never acted physically on their attraction for each other was definitely the closest thing to an emotionally based relationship he'd ever had, but there had been women too, even though they'd been few and far between and never in a relationship sense; just a scratch to satisfy the odd itch. He'd always been totally focused on his job, brought up in a family of cops where everything has been about the job, career and work ethics with nothing outside of it. No fun or enjoyment, just work. So when he sets eyes on this gorgeous guy and things spark between them from the get go, those pushed back feelings start to creep up on him again and even though he's still a tad confused he begins to actively pursue Furi, who plays hard to get at the beginning, because as much as he's extremely attracted to the stunning cop, he's still ultra wary of him because of his problematic past with an abusive husband who he's now in hiding from and trying to divorce, expecting the same sort of treatment from Syn if he gives in and lets the 'straight' police Sergeant, as he thinks at first, into his complicated life.
Syn did want to feel; feel good, feel cared for. His whole life he'd been going through the motions of life like a damn robot. 'Be a good cop' was his mantra. It's all he'd fucking known his entire life.
But they do give into their attraction (of course) and the heat level starts to rise as Furi introduces gay sex virgin Syn, into the deeelites of man lovin' and let me just tell you, there's more than a few surprises in the horizontal mambo department as it turns out that our big and tough, husky, kick ass cop, who is definitely the big Kahuna when they're dealing with all the crime stuff that dogs poor trouble magnet Furi in his everyday life, becomes a total bottom and extremely submissive in the bedroom, making our beautiful Furi, a VERY dominant top! YUM!!! Cue some lip, smacking sexaay kink. This is not BDSM, far from it, but the dynamics in their sex life definitely shows who's the boss in the bedroom...and it certainly ain't Syn! In fact it's Furi's 'Toppiness' that sparked his husband (who's a real, cruel and egotistical, arrogant bastard) to turn on Furi, as you'll find out when you read the book.
Syn's chest expanded with his inhale and fell evenly as he slowly placed his hands on the wall. Furi inwardly pumped his fist in victory. This big, bad Sergeant was his to control. Even though Patrick had wanted Furi to top him, he'd never allowed Furi to top him like this, to top the way he wanted to.
Obviously this isn't all about sex and it's unfair not to give big kudos to AE for her ability to write a fabulously entertaining story that I'll be honest about, isn't one to stop and try to analyze too closely because this is all about pure enjoyment and entertainment, in the sense that you just want to sit back and let it take you outside the hum drum of everyday existence, and by that I'm harking back to my last review of God and Days story. I said then reading Ms Via's books is like watching one of those cop films or TV series where you do have to suspend a bit of belief at their capers because the fun comes from being taken out of real life. It's all about imagination, and in this case, imagination in the form of fiction, let's you bend the rules. This is the world of buddy cops. It's just that these cops get 'buddy' together in a way that probably wouldn't get portrayed on screen or on the box...well unless it was an after midnight showing... Snort!
For fans of the first book, you'll all be very happy to know that we get a God, Day, Ro and Johnson fix! Although not as "graphically" as the last time spent with them *cough* ...but Day is just as sexy and funny as ever, God is just as gorgeous and gruff and Ro and Johnson are just as engaging and the banter between everyone, including our two new guys, is still a huge pull in the books likability factor. There's just enough of their presence scattered through the story to satisfy that need to see more of them but they never once overshadow Syn and Furi, who I now also have big love and the hots for because I had another awesome time with all the gang, and even though book one still just inches slightly into the lead as far as faves go, I still loved this book a lot. Nice one Adrienne...if you were here, we'd certainly be fist bumping!

Syn was totally consumed, feeling drunk from his powerful orgasm. He didn’t think he’d ever come that hard before. No, he knew he’d never come that hard before. His cock was still twitching deliciously when Furi climbed onto his lap, ferociously grinding his stiff cock into Syn's hard abs. Yes, god he wanted to make Furi come too; make him feel just as good as he felt right now.
“Damn you come hard. Fuckin’ loved it,” Furi whispered against his cheek, some of his own sweet nectar dripping from the corner of that talented mouth.
Syn was just barely getting his vision to focus when he heard a loud knock at the door that had Syn yanking Furi off him while simultaneously pulling his gun from his holster. With Furi tucked safely behind him, Syn pulled his pants up, needing to get his dick back into them before he could fully protect Furi. He looked back at him. “Are you expecting someone?” Syn’s voice was firm but quiet.
“No,” Furi whispered back, looking nervously at Syn’s weapon.
Syn moved them both behind the couch into a better position. He thought for a second and then pulled his Glock’s suppressor from its holder and quickly screwed it on. He didn’t want to give Furi’s landlord a coronary if he had to shoot. He moved Furi along, keeping him safely behind him. Another round of loud pounding came.
“What the hell?” Furi hissed.
Syn put his hand to Furi’s lips and shook his head, telling him not to respond. Damn, he wished he'd had more time to plan how to handle Furi’s husband. “Who is it?” Syn yelled.
“Furious!” A deep voice hollered back as the person began trying to break down the door.
Syn knew the flimsy door wouldn’t hold up against the heavy banging.
“Furious! Are you in there?”
Syn barely heard Furious yell when a large body slammed through the door, splintering the wood around the knob. The man’s force propelled him forward into the apartment and Syn used that momentum to his advantage. He pushed Furi back and charged toward the intruder. Syn dipped low and used his shoulder to push the man back into the wall. The guy looked to be almost as tall and strong as he was, leaving Syn no doubt that the man could give him a good fight, but he was momentarily startled by Syn’s strength and he was weaponless. Furi was yelling something at him but Syn couldn’t focus on that, he kept his concentration trained on the intruder. Syn ducked a wildly thrown punch, spun and hooked his arm under his attacker, throwing him face first against the wall.
“Don’t fucking move.” Syn held the man’s thick arm behind his back and used his upper body to keep him pinned. He bent the man’s hand in an awkward angle, and used his thumb to apply pressure on a sensitive nerve in the wrist, making the man scream out in agony. He brought his Glock suppressor to the man’s temple and in a low, dangerous growl told him, “He’s mine now.”
“Syn stop it, you’re hurting him!” Furi was practically screaming at the top of his lungs, but it took a few seconds for the adrenaline to stop pounding through Syn’s ears enough so he could hear him. “He’s my friend!”
Syn took his eyes off the man for a second to look at Furi, who looked like he might be sick. He looked like he was scared to touch Syn, his trembling hand hovered over Syn’s shoulder.
“Please put the gun down,” Furi whispered.
Syn raised his gun and stepped back quickly, pulling Furi with him, tucking him into his side. “Then why’s he busting in here in the middle of the night?”
“I don’t know. If you let go of me, I can ask him.” Furi looked down at Syn’s death grip on his bicep.
Syn cleared his throat. “Sorry.”
