Caught in the Middle is book one in Kira Barker’s We Kinky Three series. This book is also her debut novel. Ms. Barker has penned a sexy “friends to lovers” story with a few surprises along the way. What happens when three emotionally stunted friends turn things up a notch and dive into unchartered territory? I’ll tell you….copious amounts of kinky play and a whole lot of complex dynamics.
Erin is a resident surgeon working insane hours at the tail end of her residency. Her life is all work and no play. She barely has enough time for the basics such as sleeping and eating. How is she supposed to fulfill her sexually frustrated state when she can barely get out of the hospital to catch eight hours of sleep? When two of her best friends, Jack and Simon, offer to help Erin take care of her sexual needs, she is too horny and in need of some good orgasms to truly think about what she is agreeing to. And, when their kinky afternoon leaves Erin breathless and hungry for more, Erin decides that she wants to experience more and explore her submissive side. But, commencing a sexual relationship with two men she has known for a long time and is close with is all well and good until emotions come into play. Can the kinky trio make it work and form something long lasting or is what they are venturing into too good to last?
The author writes this book entirely from Erin’s point of view. I really loved that. Erin is a strong female lead who takes no shit so it was nice to get into her head and experience this erotic journey through her eyes. This is the first time Erin is exploring her submissive tendencies and who better to do it with than Simon, a sexy man who is not only one of her best friends but a practiced Dom. Throw her childhood friend, Jack, into the mix and you have a recipe for sexy good times. What you also have is a recipe for complications and disastrous consequences. Erin, Jack and Simon may be all into the physical side of their new found relationship; however, when emotions that all three are uncomfortable with start to invade, matters get a lot more complex. Doubts, insecurities and lack of communication all lead to confusion and misunderstandings. Can the unconventional trio work their way to a happy forever?
I will admit that it took me a little while to warm up to all the characters, particularly Simon. They were good friends and part of their friendship was exchanging barbs and being snarky towards one another. I had a little bit of a hard time seeing the three friends as more than simply friends, despite the fact that they were all bumping uglies. As they become more involved with one another I did start to become more invested in their relationship. This author did write a not overly angsty book which I am thankful for. Yes, issues did arise but it was nothing over-the-top and nothing that did not make sense.
All in all, Caught in the Middle is a solid start to what promises to be a great series. Kira Barker does a wonderful job balancing the hot and steamy with the emotional side to the storyline. This book does not end in a cliffhanger; however, the ending is more of a happy for now rather than a happy forever one. These types of endings are usually not my favorite but I will definitely be checking out what else this author has in store for Erin, Jack and Simon.
“The only thing I knew was that there was no one else in the world I’d rather spend my life with than Jack and Simon. And for now, that was enough.”

Kira Barker has always enjoyed telling stories. It has kept her sane through high school and college, and has become a true passion since. A geek gamer girl herself, she feels at home reading sci-fi and fantasy as much as writing romance. She likes her plots gritty, her smut realistic, and doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty when it comes to research. When she’s not writing, she loves annoying her cats or cruising country roads on her motorcycle.
