4.5 “I Need You” Stars!

Trading Tides is book two in Laila Blake’s Breaking in Waves novella series. This is a series that explores dominance and submission between a reclusive American screenwriter living in a quaint small seaside town in England and a journalist who went to interview him. Like book one in this series, this second installment is not an overly long book; however, it is a very well written one. Also like in book one, I was amazed at how quickly this author drew me in and had me enthralled with her eloquent and lyrical writing style. I was swiftly entranced with the narrative and loved the rhythmic flow of this book. Nothing felt rushed. Nothing came out of left field. It was a simple continuation of the story between two individuals that captured my attention right from the start.

I hated being where he was not. It wasn’t so hard most days, to banish him into a corner of my mind – always there, but calm and patient the way he was in real life, too. But it just took a letter, or the prospect of spending the evening with his voice in my headphones to make the rest of my life feel a bit like Plato’s cave – dim shadows on the wall, until Paul came to save me.”

This story picks up where book one leaves us. Please note that the first book does not end in a cliff-hanger. This second novella is simply a continuation of what is occurring between Iris and Paul. Iris is back in the big city, back into the routine of her daily life. She is having a hard time being away from Paul and is struggling to define what exactly they are to one another. They keep in contact with various phone calls, Skype sessions and write letters; but, it is not the same as having Paul physically with her, enveloping her with his presence. Paul has this calm yet assured presence about him and Iris misses that, misses being in his arms. She longs for those moments where he dominates her and brings her into a mindset that she has begun to crave like she craves his touch. Iris longs for a time where they can be reunited once again. Until they are. Did their time spent apart allow for reality to set in and their feelings to dwindle or is what they share burning brighter than ever?

“I want you to be mine, Iris.”

Unlike the first book in this series which takes place in a small dilapidated fishing village off the coast of England, Trading Tides takes place in the big city. I must admit that I missed the serene setting of the picturesque and antiquated town where I could picture walking along the rocky shores captivated by the driftwood and other inanimate stray objects along the beach. With this being said, this second book was more of an emotional journey, particularly the one that Iris embarks on. She goes from longing to be in Paul’s presence once again to sharing erotic and emotionally passionate moments him. She goes from drowning in her need for him to surfacing under his firm yet guided hand. But, is Paul ready for the intensity that is them together?

I have come to adore the writing style of this author. Ms. Blake writes in such a manner that each word, scene, nuance has a purpose. For me, nothing was wasted or superfluous. Each moment is carefully planned out as Paul takes Iris deeper and deeper into the world of submission. I once again loved Paul’s calm and collected demeanor and ease with his need for dominance at this point in his life and this was simply exhilaratingly sexy. I again had no problems imagining how freeing it was for someone like Iris to simply let go and trust herself, her body, to Paul. I understood their powerful connection. Everything builds and unfolds into an intense and complex short period of time and I was enthralled with every word.

All in all, Trading Tides was a wonderful second installment to this series. I am not a huge lover of novellas but this author has made me fall in love with Paul and Iris and their tale of passion and need. There is one more book scheduled in this series and I for one am very much looking forward to more.

“I’m not scared anymore. I’m his. And he is mine.”
