“Life isn’t in the planning, baby. Life’s in the living.”
Then Came You by Jill Shalvis is book five in her Animal Magnetism series. I am a huge fan of this author and reading her books is always like coming home. This time we are back in Sunshine, Idaho revisiting the lovable crew at Belle Haven. This author seems to follow a familiar formula with many of her books; however, it is a formula that works and keeps me engrossed with the story and her beautifully developed characters. Jill Shalvis writes fantastically hilarious and witty tales, swoony romances and hot and sexy times that leave you all hot and bothered. This book is no exception. Another heart-warming gem of a read about a one-night stand that simply kept on giving!
“I’m thrilled to be stuck in West Nowhere, USA.”
Emily Stevens is a veterinary intern who now finds herself in Sunshine, Idaho for the next year in order to fulfill her scholarship requirements. The small picturesque town was not exactly her number one choice and she would have rather be treating animals in an upscale L.A. animal clinic where her father is still residing. However, never being one to draw the lucky straw in life, Emily has accepted her fate and is committed to completing her one obligatory year and after that she is off to L.A. This one year is just a little chink in her life plan. She can handle it. Can’t she? All her determination flies out the window when she encounters the sexy veterinarian who she will be working very closely with. Unfortunately, he just happens to be the same man she had a one night stand with a few months prior at a conference. The one night where she stepped out of her comfort box and let go of all her inhibitions has come back to bite her right in the ass.
“We’re going to need rules.”
He grinned. “Like?”
“No. No smiling! These aren’t fun rules.”
Dr. Wyatt Stone is one of the veterinarians working at Belle Haven. He is a little quiet, definitely a little goofy and quirky, but also a whole lot sexy. One irresistible doctor if the amount of dishes he receives from all the eligible women in Sunshine is any indication. When the new intern walks into the office, Wyatt is taken aback seeing it is a woman he knows….knows intimately. But, Emily is only in Sunshine for one year. Wyatt has been burned in the past by a woman with no staying power. The last thing he needs is to get involved with yet another woman who is not planning on staying in Sunshine, a place he has begun to set some deep roots in. But damn if Emily is not making it easy on him with her lust-filled glances and cute, stubborn demeanor.
“I think you’re magic,” she said.
“You came out of nowhere, knocked me on my ass.”
Seeing one another again was definitely an unexpected turn of events for both Emily and Wyatt. They both make an attempt at not giving in to their desire but the sizzling hot chemistry they shared that one insanely hot night of passion is still there and threatening to burn bright and incinerate anything in its path. Wyatt is a little gun shy as he is still dealing with watching the only woman he ever loved walk away to pursue her career. He is all for having some more fun with Emily; however, to put himself out there and have the courage to ask someone to stay is not something he is willing to do. As Emily and Wyatt become closer and their connection only grows stronger, both are too stubborn to admit that what they share is more than just some sexy good times. Emily may want more from Wyatt but she is hesitant to change her life plan for someone who has not indicated he wants more from her than sex. Can the sexy laid-back doctor with alpha-like tendencies make the woman with a life plan have enough courage to change course and deviate from her carefully thought-out future? Will he be able to risk it all and finally ask for what he wants?
Both Emily and Wyatt are lovable characters that had me smiling for the majority of the book. Emily is this goal-oriented woman and not a risk taker. She clings to her life plan for a sense of security. Wyatt is someone who completely unravels her and somehow causes her to have verbal diarrhea. I loved the fact that Emily seemed to have no filter when around Wyatt. She became that unhinged. The fact that Wyatt worked this to his advantage only made things funnier and more entertaining. My favorite part about this book is the exchanges between Emily and Wyatt. Such as:
“Let’s go back to ignoring each other,” she said a little desperately. “Can we?”
“Absolutely,” he said. “I’m good at ignoring nuts.”
You do realize that I totally blame you."
"Sitting there wearing a goofy ass tie, driving like you do everything else, which is so stupid sexy I can't think"
All in all, Then Came You is a wonderfully executed romance by an author who has yet to let me down. This book is not bogged down with unnecessary over-the-top angst and drama. What you get is a sweet, fun and light-hearted love story that will leave you happily sighing and seeking out a veterinarian of your own. The next book in this series is about Wyatt’s younger sister and his best friend. I am definitely looking forward to more.
“I wasn’t sure where my home would end up being,” she admitted.
“You found it sweetness. Me. I’ll be your home. Seems only fitting, since you’re mine.”
