Librarian Elizabeth Williams is drinking her cares away at Perdition, a notorious biker bar in her hometown of Hell, TX. She meets Ryker, a member of the Four Horsemen MC and they start a fun, sexual fling. Ryker finds himself falling for Elizabeth, but an outlaw has no business with a “good girl”. Hell, he’s not even sure he’d be worthy of one. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is being stalked by her ex and Carl’s behavior is becoming more and more erratic. Can Ryker protect Elizabeth without losing his heart?
Sweet Perdition by Cynthia Rayne is book one in her Four Horsemen MC series. The quintessential good girl librarian meets a tattooed biker who is out to corrupt her. Set in the town of Hell, Texas, this biker book was a pretty decent start to a promising series.
Elizabeth Williams has just had the day from hell. Having to watch her best friend and her ex-boyfriend get married was bad enough. Wearing an awful and revealing pink fluffy bridesmaid gown was the cherry on top of her craptastic day. Elizabeth finds herself having a few drinks at Perdition, a local biker bar she has stayed away from in the past. Being a librarian and leading a relatively safe and quiet life, Elizabeth has never had to or wanted to venture into the notorious bar. At the bar Elizabeth meets Ryker while she is nursing one of the few drinks she has consumed. Damn if he isn’t a tempting package!
Ryker is a member of the Four Horsemen MC and is all about the biker lifestyle including having a plethora of fast and easy women at his fingertips. When he sees a cute redhead wearing a barbie-like pink dress at the bar, he is as intrigued by her innocence as he is by her sinfully sexy body. Ryker approaches the woman who has peaked his interest only to be turned down. Well, he has never backed down from a challenge and he was not going to start now!
After their one hot and steamy night, Ryker decides he has not had enough of the sexy librarian. The pair begin seeing one another and soon some more profound feelings develop. But, can they fit into each other’s worlds? Ryker has never been in a real relationship prior to Elizabeth and following the standard dating rules seems like something he is unwilling to do. Can he give Elizabeth all that she needs? And what about Elizabeth, can she develop the type of backbone required to be part of Ryker’s biker world?
This was a quick and entertaining read. I enjoyed the fact that despite coming from two very different worlds, both Elizabeth and Ryker somehow saw something in one another that was worth pursuing. It did not come easy and there was no insta-love. They have to put in some work and figure things out in order for a relationship between them to make sense. While this part of the storyline was what I enjoyed I did find that overall there were a few plot holes and things I found lacking. This is not an overly long book so everything happens relatively quickly and the intensity and grit normally found in biker books somehow gets lost in this one. The whole situation with Carl, Elizabeth’s ex-boyfriend, also fell a little flat for me. It was just too far-fetched to have him suddenly turn into this crazy stalker guy. And, the way it was resolved was simply too quick and easy. Perhaps if the book was a little longer, we could have had more of a foundation to build from as well as more room to explore matters in more depth.
All in all, I am glad that I read Sweet Perdition and am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
