A Word From Dex
Hello you sinfully sexy people! I’m Dexter J. Daley, but you can call me Dex. Thanks for inviting me to say a little something. I like the look of the place. Looks… naughty. Definitely getting some ideas up in here. Ooh, look at all those six-packs. What? Oh yeah! Right. Intro, me, stuff. Sorry. I got distracted by the uh… sweaty man parts. I’m Dex, and I’m a Defense Agent for the THIRDS, which stands for the Therian-Human, Intelligence, Recon and Defense Squadron. Say that three times fast. The government does love its acronyms.
Being a THIRDS agent is a far cry from my days as a homicide detective for the Human Police Force. For starters, I’m part of Destructive Delta, an elite team made up of six Defense agents and two Recon agents, one of whom is my little brother Cael. He’s a cheetah Therian. The three Felid Therians on Defense are all Alphas. Man, it’s hardcore. You don’t want to mess with those guys. They will bust you up.
Things started off rocky, but we’re good now. Except for Ash. Ash is an asshat. My partner is Agent Sloane-sexy-pants, and he’s a big broody jaguar Therian. His name’s not really sexy-pants. Don’t tell him I said that. His name’s Sloane Brodie and he’s our Team Leader. I am so wearing him down. No one can resist these dimples. I serenade him with the songs from my people—that would be anything produced before 1989, and I play air guitar for him. Yes, at first he does get that murderous gleam in his pretty amber eyes, but after it subsides, I can tell I’ve chipped away at his resolve just a little bit more.
Like the tag line says. Action. Comedy. Romance. And that one weird guy. Wait. Who’s the weird guy? Are you telling me that’s been about me the whole time?! Why didn’t I know this! I thought it was about Cael! How am I weirder than Cael? Cute? I’m cute, too. I’m way cuter than he is. Yeah, all right, he’s pretty adorable, but I’m not that weird. Am I? You know what? No Cheesy Doodles for you! And the term is “unique”. I’m unique. Don’t listen to Ash. He’s just pissed off they turned him down for the part of Simba in the Lion King. Crap. Ash is coming this way and has that crazy look in his eyes. Nothing new there. Gotta go! Enjoy the reading with the books and six-packs and things!
Hell & High Water by Charlie Cochet
Author ~ Charlie Cochet
When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.
Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.
I myself didn’t want to read it. I’m a contemporary kinda girl, I don’t do paranormal M/M romances, shape-shifters and vampires. Ever! Every time I see a book tagged as a shifter story I haul ass. Literally. Tina and shifter books? Doesn’t happen, it’s definitely a no-go. And then Charlie comes along and unhinges my neatly ordered M/M romance world. Charlie, how dare you!
Well, I’m bloody thankful that Charlie Cochet took a different route with a shifter story. She constructed a modern day world where shifters live amidst the humans. The idea of the Therians is anything but romanticised, they are shifters who were created by mistake when a vaccine to cure a worldwide pandemic altered DNA. Humans and Therians co-exist, though not always peacefully, which is why the THIRDS exists. THIRDS stands for Therian Human Intelligence Recon Defence Squadron, an elite government agency consisting of Therians and humans to fight crime as a team.
Dex… how to describe Dex, just writing his name makes me a drooling mess. Okay, stay focused Tina, I’m gonna try! After a tragic occurrence Dex, a police detective, gets recruited to the THIRDS. He’s all kinds of sexy, funny, tough, just an all around hero, and holy fucking batman, he swept me off my feet, totally overwhelmed me. I fell soooo hard for him! He is so funny but has these moments of such beautiful seriousness and compassion. I loved how he interacts with everyone, especially with his brother and dad, the relationship they have is really quite special. He just made me smile and laugh so very hard, I guess I never laughed so much while reading a suspense novel. Dex is amazing, insightful and kind, behind the over-the-top humour he is a guy who is incredibly observant, competent, and pretty sensitive. Of course he has his quirks, but he is genuinely a happy guy.
Dex is partnered with the team leader Sloane *drools* (I think I need to mop up the mess on the floor after finishing this review). Sloane, a Therian Jaguar, is awesome and hot with a touch of adorable. In the outside all alpha male, but on the inside he is heartbroken and sad. He's got the broody-moody thing going on and he's got a lot of psychological scars and a lot of baggage, but it's clear that he is just a wonderful guy. You want him to recover and you want him to be happy. Dex is just the perfect match for him!
Still suffering from the death of his former partner Sloane knows he needs to keep his head in the game, but he is intrigued by his new partner from the start. While Dex makes him mad most of the time, there is also a mutual attraction that Dex (in his anything but subtle persistence) refuses to ignore. OMG, he drives Sloane crazy with his dry sense of humour.
“Tonight, you laughed. I made you laugh. Knowing what’s in here, and that I could make you feel good, for a little while… I was wrong to dismiss guys like you. You need love.”
Sloane swallowed hard, not quite understanding what Dex was babbling on about, but feeling uncomfortable with where it was heading.
“Guys like you need love,” Dex repeated. “You need love…You got good shoulders for leaning on, you know that?”
“Not really. No one’s ever leaned on me before.”
“I’m leaning on you now,” Dex murmured.
Dex narrowed his eyes. “The force is strong with this one.”
Sloane laughed. “All right there, Yoda.”
“Please,” Dex scoffed. “We both know I’d be Han. You can be Luke.”
“Ash would be Vader. Ew, Ash would be your dad.”
Dex chortled at his own joke then sucked in another sharp breath. “Ow.”
Very quickly you can feel the chemistry between them building up. Chemistry? Did I just write chemistry?!? I guess what happens with those two is more a nuclear explosion, a burning-the sheets meltdown, so scorching hot that my eyes started to smolder while reading! It’s like those two are my own brand of heroine. I’m hooked! Did I just quote Edward Cullen? Seriously, I think I need help...
The supporting characters, both human and Therian, are just amazing: Cael, Dex’s adopted brother and teammate, Tony, Dex’s dad and commanding officer, Ash, a big jerk but, holy hell, he grew on me, kick ass Rosa and Letty, not forgetting Calvin and Hobbs. What a gang! Charlie gave them all individual personalities, yet never took the spotlight away from Dex and Sloane.
I wasn’t swept off my feet from the mystery part because the bad guy was quite predictable, he was fairly easy to figure out. Hell & High Water was more romance and action than suspense and mystery but who the fuck cares when the heroes are so adorable and funny? :)
Holy Moly! What a marvellously wonderful book! It kept me entertained and I was impressed by the outstanding dialogue and the fantastic world building. The writing has an exceptional flow and pace, never getting boring or shallow.
Overall, this was sooooo freaking awesome! Thx Charlie for introducing us to tough and sexy Dex and Sloane. THIRDS is a kickass series and those guys from Destructive Delta Unit Alpha don't need to fear some has-been heroes. Rest in peace, T&Z. There are so many excellent characters we have been introduced to in this first book that I am very excited to see how the series progresses. Can't wait for Blood & Thunder, the first of FIVE sequels so far, due on August 4. :)
Want to know a bit more about the Destructive Delta Unit Alpha team? Then look at the special site Charlie has created for the book: THIRDS HQ. There’s also a little quiz going on. Which Destructive Delta Agent are you? I’m Dex, btw… :) Or follow Charlie on Facebook and Twitter, she loves to talk about her guys.
As always, Dex has the last word:
I’m now off to munching some greasy Cheesy Doodles. And no, Dex and Ash, they are M.I.N.E!
I've never had a Therian threaten my life over cheese snacks before.
Well, except for Cael, but we're family.
