What Doesn’t Destroy us is book one in this new biker series by M.N. Forgy. Two broken and skewed individuals fighting against their own inner turmoil and haunted by their tragic pasts. One is trying to push forward and forge a new path into the future. The other desperately clings to all that he believes makes up who he is. Can they take a chance on each other? With so much standing in their way such as dark secrets, danger and betrayal, will they simply be the trigger for destruction or absolution?
“My past has also negatively affected me, yes; but hope in a different future still burns bright. I can be the fire; the light.”
Twenty-one year old Danielle Lexington (a.k.a. Dani) has lived a sheltered life under the thumb of her over-protective and over-bearing mother. When her life is turned upside down by the secrets her mother has been keeping, she finds herself coming face to face with her estranged father who had no idea she even existed. Dani is quickly ensconced in the biker world her father belongs to as the President of the Devil’s Dust MC. When she meets Shadow, he is everything she knows she should stay away from; but, there is something about the forbidden biker that calls to her. His darkness is like a beacon reaching in and taking a hold of her. Can she take a chance on someone so dangerous or will she simply end up getting shredded to pieces?
“They said I was the kid that lives within his Shadow, no soul, no remorse.”
“I’m the fucking Sargent-At-Arms of the Devil’s Dust Motorcycle Club. I’m a murderer, an outlaw, a fucking beast. There are no white picket fences and Sunday brunches on this side.”
When Shadow’s father passed away when he was younger, his mother quickly dove into a dark world of drugs, addiction and violence. Having been left to fend for himself, Shadow learned quickly about survival tactics. The Devil’s Dust MC were his saving grace and he is now fully committed and loyal to the brotherhood. When the daughter of his President shows up, Shadow can’t help but be attracted and intrigued by the green-eyed vixen who is as charming and sweet as she is feisty and temperamental. But, club laws demand that he stay away from her not to mention the fact that she comes from an entirely different world that he does. His darkness can destroy her.
As Shadow and Dani embark on a journey into the forbidden so much stands in their way. Will they both be able to let down their guards and allow the other in. Can they trust one another with their darkness?
“I don’t know what this is, if this is even anything to put a label on, but I would be willing to put my life on the line to find out where it goes.”
“I look up at him staring at me, needing me to accept him. I love Shadow, even if it comes with a darkness. Who am I to judge, I have dark shadows as well. Who's to say mine aren't as messed up as his.”
I enjoyed reading this debut novel. It had a bite of edginess to it that added to setting the scene for a dark and violent biker world. I will state that while this book did explore some harsher elements, I did not find it extremely dark. Nothing really happened that made me gasp in disbelief. Nothing was too over-the-top. I loved the development of Shadow’s and Dani’s relationship. Both realized that getting involved with one another was a dangerous move on their parts; however, they both were willing to take the risk. Neither one of them expected more profound feelings to develop but when they did, they both owned up to them and became even more willing to fight for what they were just beginning to share. This author throws a few surprises at us, some of which I saw coming while others were indeed a shocking revelation. I will say this, I wanted to punch Dani’s mother right in her self-righteous vagina! Damn, I hated that woman!!!
All in all, What Doesn’t Destroy Us is a great debut novel by M.N. Forgy. I did go into this book thinking that it was a stand-alone. Wrong. We get a big ole CLIFFHANGER at the end. I wish I knew beforehand that this book would end in a cliffhanger. It would not have hit me as hard. I felt cheated and so disappointed. Frankly, I am still a little pissed. With this being said, I completely respect the choice this author made. It can be difficult to decide as an author where to take your story. It truly is a personal thing and any great author will always go with what is true to themselves and the story. I do believe that this is what the author has done here and I truly respect the decision she has made. It remains to be seen whether the entirety of Shadow’s and Dani’s story could have been told in one book. I will have to hold out on book two to form an opinion. A wonderful read overall. Again, M.N. Forgy has written a must read book for lovers of the biker MC genre.
