He’s someone she can’t trust…
She’s someone he thinks he knows…
Violet Wilson is a wallflower. Shy, serious, and accident-prone, she’s got a bad habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The night she’s forced to pose with her friend might just be the worst time of all—that’s when she meets Jet Blevins. She knows better than to get involved with someone like him, but he touches her in ways she never expected, neverwanted before.
On the outside, Jet is a typical rocker, an arrogant lead guitarist who unapologetically lives a wild lifestyle. But on the inside, he’s battling demons and using the stage to escape the troubles of his past and the addictions of his present. Until the night he sees Violet standing at the back of the room. She brings his life into focus. She knows his secrets. She’s the girl he can’t forget, and the one thing he craves more than his addiction.
But can they ever hope to have a future when their very foundation is nothing but lies?
“Sometimes people can surprise you in a good way.”
There’s Wild, Then There’s You is book three in M. Leighton’s The Wild Ones series. When I first read the synopsis for this book I was super excited to get my hands on it. I am a sucker for the shy and innocent girl meets bad boy trope. Unfortunately, when all was said and done, I felt like something was missing when I read this quick and sweet tale of love. The execution of the story fell a little short for me. Was it a horrible book? No, absolutely not. But, it wasn’t that memorable either.
“But he reeks of danger and hedonism, two things I avoid like the plague. Two things I’ve never wanted not to avoid.
“Females don’t deny me. They never have. But this girl, I know she would. She would shoot me down if I even attempted to engage her. And, like any stubborn forbidden fruit, that makes her even more irresistible.”
This is the story of twenty-two year old Violet Wilson and twenty-six year old Jet (Jethro” Blevins). Violet is a reserved, aloof and somewhat cold young woman who works as a social worker. Life has taught her to keep her emotions intact, never lose control and never give into your weaknesses. She may keep herself at a safe distance from life; but, that doesn’t mean that she is not there for the people in her life. She spends the majority of her time fixing the problems of others that she fails to see the fact that she is hiding. Hiding behind her cool façade. Hiding from temptations. We met Jet in book two of this series as one of Jake’s best friends. Jake is the quintessential bad-boy rocker who lives an unapologetic lifestyle filled with all the vices that come along with being in the limelight. Like Violet, Jet is hiding. He is hiding behind his arrogant persona. But, on the inside, he is battling his own personal demons. Music is his escape, somewhere he can tune out all his troubles even if it is just for a little while.
When Violet and Jet meet the connection is most definitely there. Jet is someone that Violet normally stays far away from. He makes her feel and he makes her want to lose control. Jet is drawn to Violet’s innocence and sweetness. Despite her cool demeanor, he knows that she is a good girl at heart. Someone who he believes is way too good for him. But, when it comes to full disclosure, neither Violet nor Jet have been completely honest and forthcoming about some things. As things progress between the pair, how long will it be before the deceit is unveiled and hearts are broken? Can their fragile and tentative relationship even survive with so much between them that is hiding in the dark?
It took me a while to warm up to Violet. At the beginning of the story she came across as this complete doormat who allowed the people in her life to take full advantage of her kindness. I liked Jet well enough; but, frankly, he was no different than many other rock-star bad boys I have read about. I feel like the development of their relationship was very superficial. Everything seemed to move too fast. So quickly that it was hard to get any depth from the storyline. I found it very hard to become fully invested. I would have liked to perhaps see more exploration when it came to the characters – more about their pasts, why they were the way they were, etc. Further, some sub-plots were briefly introduced into the overall story arc; but, as quickly as they were brought forward, they were abandoned.
There’s Wild, Then There’s You is essentially a book that I enjoyed but it is also a book that did not leave a mark. Even as I write this review I find that I am having a hard time remembering certain elements of the story. This will go down as one of those books that had plenty of potential but fell a little short for me. Please remember that this is simply my humble opinion. M. Leighton is a great author and if this book is one that interests you, definitely give it a go.
