Get Off My Case by Lisa Oliver ~ M/M Romance Group Love’s Landscapes Event.

This story was written as a part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

This is a fabulous event that gives M/M readers a chance to catch up with some of their favourite authors, experience new authors, and also gives those readers that have yet to dip their toes into the genre a chance to find out why so many of us are huge fans of Gay Romance… all for free!!! AMAZING!!!

The M/M team will be following the Love’s Landscapes releases and bringing you our take on some of these fabulous gems. We would also like to thank the Goodreads M/M Romance group who organise this yearly event and those authors that give their time freely for the fans enjoyment… Free eBooks from amazing authors is a gift we are all immensely grateful for.

Dear Author,

He was my nemesis all through school. I was the gay kid who he treated as contagious. Now I’m a successful detective, and he has just transferred in to my Police Department. Everyone knows I’m gay, but I’m a damn good detective so no one says anything. I refuse to be bullied again, and I’m not giving up the career I’ve fought so hard for.

Photo Description:
Two naked men lying on a bed; the smaller one on top of the bigger one, his head resting on the other man’s chest. The man underneath has his arms up around his lover. There is the hint of a white fluffy rug covering them from the hips down. The two are obviously lovers and are at peace with each other.

Monique’s Review

Demitri Polst was Shane’s worst nightmare growing up.

Shane was small and pretty for a boy, which made him the perfect target for the wolf shifter and his gang of thugs. The fact that Shane was also gay probably didn’t help, although at the time neither he nor his tormentors were sure of that, and with it being against pack law it was definitely not something Shane was going to discuss with anyone. Miserable in his own skin and feeling alienated from his family and pack, after his first full transition into wolf form at the age of seventeen, Shane came out and left home without a backwards glance.

Eight years later and the last person he expected or wanted to be introduced to as the new detective in the precinct was his nemesis… Demitri Polst. exasperating the situation more, it turns out the fucker, straight homophobic fucker at that, was his mate!

Demitri Polst is a womanising, alpha male, who is indeed straight… except his mate and the person his body and mind yearned for is Shane… a man. I found this whole situation hilarious, especially the interactions with his best friend and former lover Angela, because Demitri really didn’t have a clue about the mechanics of gay sex. But at the same time it was a little heart-breaking because he knows he is already at a disadvantage for being such a fuck up in school and has no idea about being gay, but he is willing to give up everything because his heart and his wolf craved Shane, sex and labels be damned!  Unfortunately, the object of his desire, Shane, is running in the opposite direction, his memories too painful to even begin to acknowledge the inevitable.

This story is a typical bad boy grows up, sees the error of his ways, is full of remorse and seeks out Shane, his mate, to beg forgiveness and complete the mating bond that neither can deny. We also have a homicide investigation into a serial killer targeting gays running through the story… And yes, it’s all a little cliché and we get the ‘mine’ thing going on too, but for some reason that never gets old for me, I just love all that male testosterone floating around.

This book isn’t over yet, it’s to be continued and that actually makes me happy, because there was a lot I enjoyed in this story, it’s fun, it’s sexy and the characters are likeable… and yes, even Demitri, and I’m excited for more.

Macky’s Review

This started off really well. I liked the premise of wolf shifters being cops, had high hopes for the love/hate/mate relationship between the smaller shifter and his straight teenage nemesis who had made his early years hell, looked forward to the background murder mystery and loved the idea of the sexual tension that was going to be generated from the two opposites MC's finding out they were mates.

I got quite engaged in this GFY story and have to say it was a pretty sexy read, especially when Shane and Dimitri finally got physical. But it dipped a little mid story and I did have a couple of WTF! when a stereotypical, homophobic nasty cop was introduced I did the eye roll but generally speaking it was enjoyable, even though it does ends on a "To be continued" cliffy.

I liked it enough to want to see what happens next because there's obviously more to come yet. The crime side of the story was probably the weakest in this short, because most of it was taken up with Dimitri trying to make Shane accept him as his mate, Shane coming to terms with their rocky past history and the two of them fighting the sexual tension whilst on the job but I think that when Lisa writes the follow up, the murder mystery will hopefully be more fleshed out and we'll get the answers we need. I just love the fact that there's so many diverse stories running through these yearly GR events and the fact that they're free is just brilliant.
