Synopsis

Bollocks as a word is a little naughty. It’s a little cheeky. It’s a little rude. And it’s the tongue-in-cheek theme for this collection of short stories celebrating all things English.

You'll discover a bonk is not a typo for somewhere to keep your money. A shag isn’t something thick and plush under your feet to keep them warm, though it is guaranteed to heat you up! And as for a snog, the boys of Bollocks! can assure you it’s worth finding out what that Brit term means.

The stories will make you laugh. They’ll make you snort. They’ll make you blush.Sigh—they’ll probably make you shake your head. They may even make you want to catch the next flight to England to find something a little British of your own! It's not just cricket, or jolly hockey sticks, it's more… it’s the very British, Bollocks!

Bollocks

The M/M Reviewing Team got together and chose two short stories each at random to review. What fun we had and you can read our thoughts on each story below and for each short story wrote a quickie review.

Healing by Tabitha McGowan

Monique’s Quickie

I have to be honest here and say I am not very good with anthologies, or should I say short stories. I am one of those readers that needs to connect to the emotion in a book and with shorts I seem to come away either unsatisfied or left wanting more. With Healing I definitely came away from it with the latter. It felt like a moment in time, a teaser into the lives of these two men. We don’t actually see the romance either, just the promise of what could come. I loved the whole premise of this short, and found myself curious about the world they lived in and totally smitten with both Tol and Immanuil.

This is a paranormal romance with a dystopian feel to it, again, I so want to explore this world they live in. Tol is a healer who unselfishly, and at the risk to his own health has dedicated his life to helping and healing others, but it’s not only his health that is at risk but also his life. Tol is resigned to his fate, but not in a bad way because he has such a big heart and vibrant personality, he’s funny and embraces life regardless of the dangers he faces. Immanuil, comes across as a warrior, fearless, a loner, but somehow Tol touches a place inside him that warms the coldness he seemed to be shrouded in.

Healing was a fabulous introduction for me to Tabitha McGowan and I was totally impressed with her writing in this short. All that remains is… When will you be writing the novel???

Sheep’s Clothing by Elin Gregory

Mark’s Quickie

Well the thing with choosing stories at random is you never no what you’re going to get. I always say I’m seriously not into shifter stories and when I knew that I had got one firslty I thought “oh bollocks” then I said well lets give it a go. If I’m going to trust any author then it’ll be Elin. I’m delighted to say that I was not disappointed. This shifter story is based in Wales and there are weresheep. So I guess I liked the irony in this for a start, if it’s going to be in Wales then you can't have a story without sheep – lol! Darren is a werewolf and plumber, disillusioned with his pack in London has moved to Wales. One problem as a werewolf and lots of sheep around then you would think he is in werewolf paradise.

Well, he starts to make friends and is attracted very much to Gethin a local farmer. When he changes and goes hunting one night he is defended off attacking a flock of sheep by a couple of very aggressive rams. They turn out to be weresheep and Gethin is one. As he falls for Gethin he is put in a complete quandary about how to control his urges and not harm the sheep when he changes and therefore comes up with a plan with Gethin to keep himself contained so he can’t go sheep worrying. I just loved the whole idea about Welsh weresheep fending off werewolves sort of made the story for me. It was very well written and enjoyed it very much. So my first successful foray into the shifter genre – thank you Elin.

No Worries Mate by E.S. Skipper

Oh, I liked this one too. How you can so easily confuse bullocks with bollocks. The Blue Lagoon meets M/M Romance. Jake goes to New Zealand as a photographer and is taken to a remote island protected for conservations reasons by a ranger called Rangi a local Maori. Again I loved the humour here, Jake is going to an island with no modern facilities, so city boy meets the country and this causes for some really funny moments. Well, I suppose if you’re on a remote tropical island then there is always the danger of attraction. But my did the fireworks fly with chemistry between these two very different characters. The place and setting was a dream, who couldn’t get all romantic and as for Rangi – phew!!! What a hunk!

I just loved the way Rangi would tease Jake about his lack of knowledge of surviving in the wilds so to speak. They spend a wonderful couple of weeks together, but alas Jake has to go back. Although Rangi loves his island he is torn when having to lose Jake, the loneliness of the island I reckon hits home. All is not lost and they find a way to be together with a very nice HEA.

It Could Be You by Anyta Sunday

Tina’s Quickie

What would you do if it FINALLY happens and YOUR numbers are showing up, your lucky numbers for years and you turn your pockets inside out and realise you must have lost your bloody ticket and fifteen million quid?

You’d scream BOLLOCKS, I’m quite sure you would.

That’s exactly what Ted does… Ted, who is madly in love with his best friend and roommate Jenson… Jenson, who is surprised when he learns about the meaning behind those numbers and has a few secrets of his own.

Anyta’s writing style is cheerful and witty and I really enjoyed reading her easygoing and entertaining short story. It kept a silly smile on my face from the beginning to the end. Those two were just too cute to be real and I didn’t want this little glimpse into their life to end. Brilliant done!

Just Like Pulling Teeth by L.J. Harris

Macky’s Quickie

Okay I think there was a conspiracy going on at Sinfully because I kid you not, in about two weeks I'm going to the dentist for an extraction and some work on a wisdom tooth.. So guess who got the story about the dentist?

"OH BOLLOCKS!!!!"

Mind you if my dentist was half as hot as Aiden Coopers new one in this cute short story then I'd be on the blower asking if they could bring my appointment forward ASAP! Oh my! Dr Sebastian Gibbs...tall, dark, tattoed and half Brazilian. Pass me the 'sucky up thingy' the nurse puts in your mouth because I'm drooling just thinking about him. When was the last time a dentist whispered these words in your ear:

"You're doing well, meu querido," (said in a sexy, deep, caressing, 'wafty' way!)

Mine just mumbles through his mask "Everything okay, down there?" while he pokes around and I try to answer his questions with my mouth wide open.. "Ahm oh-ay, ankoo"

Poor Aiden's having a hell of a time with all four of his aching wisdom teeth so who better to make it better and as painless as possible than Dr Seb. With his tattered jeans, tight tank top, gorgeous green eyes and his wafty dulcet tones. Aiden's going to lose all four teeth in the long run but he's also in danger of losing his heart as well!

This was a fun, sweet smexy read that had me smiling (wincing at times)and sighing happily as Adrien got his sexy man— in a slightly more unusual way. Let's just say Aiden losing his inhibitions under the influence of laughing gas gave Sebastian a snippet of information about Aidens anatomy that he probably wasn't expecting. *snort* A story of Ouch's...Owww's...Ahhhh's and Awwwww's! Oh and quite a few cries of " Bollocks!!! " as well. Very enjoyable!

Oh and there's a Brazilian Jaguar and a British lion too... What have those got to do with dentists? Read it and you'll find out!

DIY Delights by Taylin Clavelli

Macky’s Quickie

I can only say this story was a load of bollocks!! No... really ...it was...but not in that sense of the word! Haha.

Do you remember the scene in the film Roxanne with Steve Martin, when he comes up with the

'20 different ways to insult a big nose?' Well Duncan, the MC of this funny little short, does the equivalent throughout the story with the different situations you would use the word "Bollocks."

Accident...Frustration...Wonder...Statement...Action...Description...

Dunc says "bollocks" a lot! Mind you when he and Mike purchase their first house together, a little cottage they call Gayden—love that name—they pretty much go through all the above

Basically this is all about them lovingly renovating their quaint but dilapidated new home whilst living in a caravan as they do it, so there's lots of instances when those different uses of the expletive"Bollocks" gets put into play, as you can probably imagine. For example: at times they have to move back in with Duncs mum and dad and trying to have sex with the 'rents around is obviously going to produces a few frustrated cries of "Bollocks" from our two guys. Duncs favourite use of the word is when its used as 'Fact'...you'll find out why when you read it <winks> and I'm pretty sure its Mikes favourite way of using it too because our Dunc has a fascination with bollocks in the true sense of the word *cough*

"Bollocks are my kink, I love them. Walnuts don't do it for me. Give me something big, heavy and slapping."...

Aaaaaand, I might add, in the trouser department, Mike ain't no slouch! Lol.

Nice, laid back, fun read.

In the Blue Moonlight by H. Lewis-Foster

Monique’s Quickie

More than Bollocks were on show when Simon decides it’s a good idea to drop his trousers and moon the local constabulary, all harmless fun on a night out with his younger brother Sean and his friends, but totally out of character for our lonely, old before his time, boring accountant Simon. Now as students you can understand this moment of revelry from Sean and his mates, but Simon is a thirty year old, deputy finance officer, nice house, car and good standing within the local community…

And according to his best friend Chris…

Chris peered over the top of his spectacles. “You, my friend, are having a mid-life crisis”

The solution…

“…You need to meet someone. I’m not saying you need to marry him. Just have a dance and a snog”

The Place…

“We are having a night out at Preston’s

The last person Simon expects to meet there was the cute blond bobby who was more familiar with his bare arse than he was with his face…

“I didn’t recognize you with your trousers on”

This is a sweet, small town, rural community love story… and coming from one of those myself I could appreciate the humour and the issues both men faced in their budding romance.

It did all seem a little rushed, but it’s a short story, one which was fun and quirky, and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It’s Written in the Stars by Lily Velden

You say it was fate.

That led you to that date.

You call it kismet.

That made you take that bet.

Maybe destinys the word.

You would have preferred.

Doesnt matter which you use.

Its Written in the Stars.

Oh yeah, Written in the Stars!

Every time Sebastian hears this opening tune he knows it’s time for the Sunday TV dating show ‘Written in the Stars’ his best friend and roommate Declan loves so much. This Sunday is special, though. Declan is determined to coax Sebastian into applying to the show.

Of course Sebastian thinks that Declan’s idea is bollocks, because he is gay and ‘Written in the Stars’ pair up only guys and girls. If there wasn’t the Valentine special coming up where they are doing a guy meets guy episode. Sebastian gives in and the way is open for the most hilarious TV show ever…

Guys… I won’t go into more details but Lily’s short story is just… the dog’s BOLLOCKS! I enjoyed it immensely and can’t recommend it enough. Thanks Lily for this really funny read.
