“Is their bond strong enough to survive each other?”
Cut Too Deep by K.J. Bell was a book that kept me thoroughly engrossed with all the twists and turns that I often did not see coming. A traumatized and broken young woman learns to live again and finds that she is deserving of love and happiness and a man with secrets of his own who finds himself falling.
“Her experiences were like an ugly birthmark she could never get rid of, and when she tried, it left an uglier scar.”
“Miller and sex went together like cookies and milk, one decisively better than the other.”
Hadley Walker has a terrifyingly traumatic past that she is learning to cope with. She is moving forward with her life, holding down a job and is essentially choosing a better path for herself. Hadley’s absolute passion is dance, something that she is unable to do full-time due to the costs. Hadley lusts after the mysterious and gorgeous Miller Genetti from afar. He is a person she sees around where she works and she knows absolutely nothing about him. Despite this, there is something magnetic and appealing about him and Hadley can’t seem to stop her lust-filled infatuation. Miller has noticed the shy and beautiful young woman who seems to have taken an interest in him. He would love nothing more than to explore matters between them between the sheets but he can tell she is extremely skittish. An exchange of letters, an inexplicable bond and secrets that should remain in the past. However, secrets have a way of coming to the forefront for all to see. Can Hadley and Miller fight against the weight of all the secrets they both hold on to or will they simply crumble and fall?
I really enjoyed this story. I love it when a character can get past the horror and trauma of all that they have endured and come out on top. In this case, Hadley is the character who goes through this transformation. She starts off as this timid and delicate young woman and beautifully morphs into a brave, fearless fighter by the end. Despite his secretive aura, Miller was there for her protecting her and also allowing for her to stand on her own when needed. I loved seeing the development of the relationship between Hadley and Miller and the pair shared some great chemistry and passionate sexy times. I was completely immersed in the plot with so many unexpected connections coming to fruition. I definitely did not see a lot of it coming.
Where this book fell a little short for me was that I had a hard time with the writing style at times. I love it when we get multiple POVs in one book but in this book we get the different POVs in one chapter and it did get a little confusing at times as there was not always a clear indication that the POV had changed. This is just my opinion. Please don’t let it deter you from reading this book. Despite my issues with the writing, I still think it is a great book.
All in all, Cut Too Deep was a great and enjoyable great. We not only get a wonderful and passionate romance and a fascinating plot but we also are introduced to some intriguing and memorable secondary characters. This is my first book by this author but it will definitely not be my last. I am hoping that some of the secondary characters we are introduced to in novel will get their own stories.
“Miss, are you coming?” Miller asked.
Hadley dragged her gaze from his neatly pressed trousers, stopping at his rugged and handsome face. Miller’s come-hither smile suggested he could make all of her fantasies come true. Not that she would ask him to.
She sought out the jagged scar that started in the middle of his chin and disappeared under his sharp jaw. It intrigued her. She had a similar one on her right cheek, faded and usually covered with foundation. His, thicker and more prominent, reflected a whisper of imperfection on an otherwise perfect male specimen. Only the stubble that typically shadowed his chin, hinted it bothered him. Hadley often wondered how he got it, but dared not ask. In truth, Hadley dared not speak to him, period.
“Miss,” Miller repeated, “are you coming?”
Am I coming?
Of course, Miller meant into the elevator with him, but Hadley interpreted it with an alternate meaning. His question rang out literally—the way Hadley dreamt about the previous night, Miller making her come until she begged him to make love to her. Her trembling thighs had woken her from the tantalizing dream.
