Catherine Pope has never been enough. Every man she has ever loved abandoned her—from her father to her fiancé. She finally accepted the fact she would never be enough to hold any man’s heart and soul.
Then Catherine met Jackson Cole.
When her world literally collided with the sexy former Navy SEAL, everything she always believed is turned upside down and left scattered. He made her feel alive and desirable, consumed her with fierceness and loyalty—which completely unnerved her. Jackson got her in a way no one ever had, giving him the power to destroy her.
If she breaks down and gives him what’s left of her battered heart—will he protect it? Or will Catherine become an irrelevant part of yet another man’s life?
Will she get the one thing that has always evaded her – to finally be someone’s beloved?
"To belong to someone."
"All I've ever wanted is to be loved."
"To be someone's beloved."
Corinne Michaels' debut, Beloved, was fantastic!! It's the perfect blend of romance, humor, emotion, and spicy sexiness!
Jackson and Catherine were real, multi-dimensional people. They had flaws. They had strengths and weaknesses, and they had issues which many readers will be able to identify with, or at least easily imagine and understand. Though, just to note, the author did unveil Catherine's innermost concerns and hurts more so than Jackson's in this first book.
: "As a child, I had my father, who adored and worshiped me--I was his perfect little daughter."
"What happens to a little girl when all of that stops?"
"The man I love, the man I'm going to marry, is having sex with one of my friends."
"There is nothing to hold me together as I crumble to the ground in complete devastation.
All over again"
Not enough. Never enough. Catherine felt that so strongly. She internalized the belief until it was as much a part of her as her eye or hair color. It simply was. For my own reasons and in my own way, I so sincerely identified with that sentiment, that belief. There were moments I felt that author Corinne Michaels had accessed my very own thoughts, beliefs, and self-doubts. As a character, Catherine resonated deeply with me. What I loved even more, though, was her professional confidence and her personal demeanor. She wasn't cocky, arrogant, or bitchy. She didn't need to be. She was just that good at her job. She knew it, as did those around her. She was also funny, kind, nurturing, loving. She was someone I could easily know in real life, and we would be great friends!
And then there's Jackson. Oh, holy night! He's been added to my list of Book Boyfriends, guaranteed, and I may just fight any woman dumb enough to think he can be ripped from my clutches - LOL!! Jackson was such a real guy, you know? Even if he was wealthy, sinfully sexy, and a former Navy SEAL. Er, okay, maybe he wasn't all that real - HA!! No, seriously, even with all of that, he had his flaws, his secrets...and all of those characteristics which make a guy a guy. Like Catherine, he was a fully fleshed-out character. And, actually, I do believe author Corinne Michaels is some kind of evil genius because not only was Jackson a fantasy man as a former Navy SEAL and current security contractor, THE MAN WAS CEO OF A HIGH-END COSMETICS COMPANY, AS WELL!!! No joke! I mean, I would get ALL that was Jackson the man - AND - early access to all of the girly pretties I could possibly want or need?!?! Sign. Me. Up.
"Pink, huh? Well only real men wear pink, and I assure you, Catherine, I'm all the real you'll ever need"
"But when you touch me, I'm lost to you."
"His lips inch closer to mine and his words are soft and dripping with honesty."
"You're never lost, Catherine. I'll always find you."
"His mouth crushes down on mine as his words resonate through me, bringing tears to my eyes. And there he is--my hero."
"Now let me show you all the girly shit we make here."
As a note, I do want to mention that Beloved does end on a cliffhanger, and as much as I shook my fist at the author, I also LOVED how she handled it. The last scene is really perfect, and it had me itching for the next book!! Jackson and Catherine's story will take two books to tell, and the second book, Beholden, will most likely be out in late 2014 or January 2015. The rest of the books will be about other characters in the series. In the meantime, though, I would HIGHLY suggest not waiting to read this first book!! I would have hated missing out on all of the emotions this story made me feel!
Beloved is full of wonderful dialogue, great storytelling, and impressive writing from a brand new author! Corinne Michaels has poured her heart and soul into the first book of this new series, and I could feel it on every page, with every word.
