Synopsis

Sinning never felt so good…

A fortuitous encounter.

A meeting that should never have happened.

Many years ago, two children from completely different worlds forged a connection, a fateful connection, an unbreakable bond that would change their lives forever…

Salome knows only one way to live—under Prophet David’s rule. In the commune she calls home, Salome knows nothing of life beyond her strict faith, nor of life beyond the Fence—the fence that cages her, keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of misery. A life she believes she is destined to always lead, until a horrific event sets her free.

Fleeing the absolute safety of all she has ever known, Salome is thrust into the world outside, a frightening world full of uncertainty and sin; into the protective arms of a person she believed she would never see again.

River ‘Styx’ Nash knows one thing for certain in life—he was born and bred to wear a cut. Raised in a turbulent world of sex, Harleys, and drugs, Styx, unexpectedly has the heavy burden of the Hades Hangmen gavel thrust upon him, and all at the ripe old age of twenty-six—much to his rivals’ delight.

Haunted by a crushing speech impediment, Styx quickly learns to deal with his haters. Powerful fists, an iron jaw and the skillful use of his treasured German blade has earned him a fearsome reputation as a man not to be messed with in the shadowy world of outlaw MC’s. A reputation that successfully keeps most people far, far away.

Styx has one rule in life—never let anyone get too close. It’s a plan that he has stuck to for years, that is, until a young woman is found injured on his lot… a woman who looks uncannily familiar, a woman who clearly does not belong in his world, yet a woman he feels reluctant to let go…

Dark Contemporary Romance/New Adult Novel.

Contains sexual situations, violence, sensitive and taboo subjects, offensive language and mature topics. Recommended for age 18 years and up*

Lisa’s Review

5+++ “Heaven & Hades” Stars

You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you
Help me I broke apart my insides, help me I’ve got no soul to sell
Help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself
I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed

You get me closer to god

You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything
Help me tear down my reason, help me its' your sex I can smell
Help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody else
I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to god
Through every forest, above the trees
Within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
You are the reason I stay alive

Closer, Nine Inch Nails

“Sinning never felt so good….”

It Ain’t Me, Babe by Tillie Cole is a book that I was anticipating with bated breath. Being a huge fan of this author’s Sweet Home series, I knew that this book would be something special. I was absolutely correct in my assumption. What Tillie Cole has created here is an utterly brilliant and poignant tale of love that had me reeling with its raw, gritty and dark nature. Gone is Ms. Cole’s sassy and fun story-telling. What you get is an edgy, gripping and twisted story about survival and salvation. This book is nothing like Tillie Cole’s previous works so do not go in expecting that. With this being said, I truly feel that this author has definitely portrayed that she has some mad writing skills that left me utterly speechless and in awe.

River “Styx” Nash and Salome’s (or Mae) story began fifteen years earlier with a chance encounter that deeply impacted both of them. Styx was a young boy with a debilitating speech impediment and Mae was a young girl whose life had forever been changed by a cruel and terrifying incident. Styx was able to communicate with the clearly distressed and horrified Mae, marking her as the third person he was able to use words with (his father and his best friend, Ky, being the other two). Their happenstance meeting was brief but Styx was never able to forget the young girl with the black hair and clear blue wolf eyes and Mae was unable to forget the boy who had made her feel whole and alive even for a short period of time. The pair forged a powerful and unbreakable connection never truly understanding just how much their lives would change.

Salome has been raised in a strict religious commune under the rule of a Prophet named David never knowing what life was like beyond the fence that encompassed the commune. Her twenty-three years of life have been about rules and religious codes, rules she is meant to follow or else suffer the consequences – rules that keep her engulfed in misery and entwined with a destiny she feels like she is meant to lead. Mae truly awakens to all the wrongs and the poison brought on by the men of her religious sect and manages to barely escape after a final horrifying incident. Broken, bleeding and alone, Mae is found near a biker compound barely hanging on by a thread.

Styx is the twenty-six year old President of the mother chapter of the Hades’ Hangmen MC. Known as the “Hangman Mute”, Styx’s life is brutal and filled with violence, Harleys and vices. Styx’s world is turbulent and dark with no room for gentleness, passion and love. You live and die by the cut and with a speech impediment that could make him vulnerable, Styx has learned to speak with his fists. A formidable reputation and a cold and lonely existence is all he knows and understands. Styx has never allowed anyone to get too close, that is until a young woman is found barely alive on his compound. A beautiful young woman who radiates innocence and obviously does not belong in his violent world. A young woman who calls to Styx’s protective nature like no one else has before and one he wants to keep right by his side indefinitely.

Mae all of a sudden finds herself having to deal with the uncertainty of the outside world, a world she has been taught is full of hate and sin. She is confused, frightened and the only safety and security she is drawn to comes from a man she met as a young boy who is now rough, edgy and sin personified. Styx is captivated by Mae and despite attempting to keep her at bay, he is unable to completely stay away. He wants to do right by her and protect her knowing that he should let her go and find some safer pastures for her to start a new life instead of keeping her at the MC compound when there is so much existing turmoil and conflict; however, his obsession and compulsion to have her with him prevents him from ultimately letting her go.

“I thought you said, ‘it ain’t you who’s meant for me?”

He laughed. He rarely laughed, but when he did, I rejoiced at the sound of it: husky, deep…male. “Oh, it’s me, babe…Ain’t no other man for you…but me.”

****

“You have light within you, Styx, and I feel it shining through like the rays of the midday sun. It is beautiful. You are a good man.”

****

“I have only ever liked one boy in my life. I have only ever wanted one man to have as my own. I have only ever had one dream since I was eight. Styx, the dream is you. You stole my heart fifteen years ago and you still haven’t given it back.”

****

“We were always fated to be together. He is my everything. He is my entire world….Styx is my salvation.”

It Ain’t Me, Babe is ultimately a beautifully crafted tale of love and perseverance with two completely opposing protagonists who should never have had a chance at love with one another and, yet, they endure proving that they are fated for one another. Mae represents all that is kind, forgiving and good despite having had her innocence and childhood stolen from her by vile acts done in the name of a higher power. She is facing a huge battle within but deeply believes that Styx is the force to vanquish all her demons. And, Styx…my beautiful Styx…was this violent protector with blood stains tarnishing his soul. He was confined by his inability to speak with words but in no way did this hinder his fierceness and strength as the leader of his MC family. In the jagged and ferocious biker world, two souls find each other once again and give one another the faith and courage to move past the demons of the past and ultimately grasp onto a love that was predestined to be so long ago.

This story was captivating, unique and absolutely breathtaking. I was utterly entranced with its brilliance. Basically, Tillie Cole had me by the balls…er….so to speak. The plot is complex and yet this author manages a seamless flow from one scene to another. One of my favorite aspects about this book is how Greek mythology and religious undertones are cleverly interwoven into the intricate and detailed story enhancing my reading experience by pulling me in directions I never expected and resolutely drawing me in mentally and emotionally. The parallel references to the sordid myth about Hades and Persephone was intelligently executed. Ms. Cole took a risk with this storyline given her previous books and her reading audience. But, what a hell of a risk! This book is magical and the twists and turns left me on the edge of my seat.

All in all, It Ain’t Me, Babe is a literary feat that Tillie Cole should be extremely proud of. She sends a strong and profound message in this book about right and wrong, good and evil, perseverance, salvation and love. This is a book that stayed with me and I actually had a hard time writing a review in an attempt to do it justice. Frankly, I still find myself thinking about Styx and Mae. This book touched my soul and my mind with its sheer brilliance. A story that I am unlikely to forget. Ms. Cole introduces some fascinating secondary characters and I am hoping that this book is only the beginning of what I hope will be a series. So, are you listening, Tillie? Please do us all a favor and continue. I will beg if I have to!

About The Author

Tillie Cole Author PicTillie Cole is a Northern girl through and through. She originates from a place called Teesside on that little but awesomely sunny (okay I exaggerate) Isle called Great Britain. She was brought up surrounded by her English rose mother -- a farmer's daughter, her crazy Scottish father, a savagely sarcastic sister and a multitude of rescue animals and horses. Being a scary blend of Scottish and English, Tillie embraces both cultures; her English heritage through her love of HP sauce and freshly made Yorkshire Puddings, and her Scottish which is mostly demonstrated by her frighteningly foul-mouthed episodes of pure rage and her much loved dirty jokes.
