Antonio Spinelli blew through my orderly life like a cyclone.

Gorgeous and passionate, with a breathtaking brutality, he put me under his spell the moment he touched me, drawing me into his underworld of risk, violence and betrayal.

And I found, just as this sophisticated savage didn’t trust me, I didn’t trust myself. Something happened to me. Some alchemy from the heat between us.

I discovered I was a savage, too.

Becs’ Review

Welcome back, Ms Reiss.  It’s been a while!

Spin is the first book in the new Songs of Corruption series.  It runs concurrently with the Songs of Submission series and it is not necessary to have read that series to begin with one.  It features Theresa, sister of Jonathan from the Submission series, and Antonio Spinelli.  This is the first book in an anticipated three book series and, while there is no real cliff-hanger at the end, the story is not yet complete.

spin casting

A new book from CD Reiss is always hotly anticipated and she certainly doesn’t disappoint with this one.  It’s delivered with her now familiar dry wit which is really rather unapologetic in its style and we really wouldn’t have her any other way.  This is why we read her books – great character development, intriguing plots, seriously HOT sex scenes and her entertaining narrative.

Theresa Drazen meets Spin for the very first time at a scene that Songs of Submission fans will be familiar with.  It should have been an auspicious moment, she’s definitely wildly attracted to him but, rather embarrassingly, it’s all rather anti-climactic for her.  But she can’t forget that gorgeous face with those dangerous eyes as dark as felony and it’s not long before they meet again.

Theresa is the former fiancĂ© of Daniel, mayoral candidate, and had been helping in his campaign until he cheated on her with one of his staff. She’s a pretty clean-cut accountant but I actually found her far more ballsy and direct than I’d been expecting after the few times that we saw her in Songs of Submission.  She’s a little bitter about her recent brush with love and is left wondering if there’s something inherently unsatisfying about her – she’s fairly plagued with self-doubt.

Spin, her beautiful Capo, storms through her life like a cyclone.  She soon realises that his ‘lawyer’ persona is just a facade and that he’s very much a part of the Los Angeles Italian mob scene and she soon finds herself embroiled but Spin wants to keep her at a distance.  Despite his incredible attraction for her, he’s not ready to corrupt her.  Yet!

spin again quotey

Spin is a very dark and edgy character.  He’s incredibly volatile, simmering with barely-restrained violence ready to explode with anger at any minute.  He’s like an undetonated bomb and he really does stalk the sordid criminal underbelly with a commanding presence.  He’s absolutely delicious and, despite his felonious connections, he does try to do the right thing by Theresa by staying away but he can’t resist his Contessa and it’s not long before they come together and, oh boy, is it sizzling HOT!  This is one sexy, edgy ride.

I really enjoyed this twisty, edgy story laced through with raw passion.  I wouldn’t describe Spin as vanilla but he’s not as kinky as Jonathan but don’t let that deter you, this is still sexy as hell.  I love the way that this story runs concurrently with Songs of Submission and we get to see Jonathan dip in and out of the story and, if you’ve read that story, you’ll know where he and Monica are at with their relationship.  We see a little more of Deirdre who comes across as a boozy left-wing freedom fighter and we get to know Paulie Patalano a little better who you will have heard of if you’ve read Jonathan and Monica’s story.

It’s a fantastic and really promising beginning to Theresa and Spin’s story, which is likely to be fraught with danger and corruption as the series progresses and I can’t wait for the next book.

About the Author

CD ReissCD Reiss lives smack in the middle of Los Angeles with her children and husband. She likes to make pretty pictures and write dirty scenes. She eats dark chocolate and chili, together, sometimes with bacon, and doesn't care what you think about that.

There are a million more things she could tell you about herself besides that, but they're all too boring to mention in company.
