Tracy Brandt considers himself a lucky man. He has a wonderful family, good friends, and a dependable job. His love life, however, features a cheating ex who, though out of the house, is not yet out of the picture—with a past that just might get Tracy killed.
Homicide inspector Cord Nolan wants nothing more than to show his best friend’s little brother that he’s a reliable man, but to do that he’ll have to get Tracy to look past the player he used to be. It'll be a tough sell; reputation is everything, and Cord's is tarnished by his past indiscretions.
Tracy and Cord have spent five years trying to suffocate their fiery attraction under a blanket of grudging antagonism. When Tracy finds himself with a target on his back, Cord finally has the chance to ride to the rescue and break through the dam of Tracy's reserve. But he’d better be careful: if Cord is breaking the floodgates to wash away the past, he's going to have to hold tight to Tracy to make sure they're still standing when the tumult recedes.
If this book had no blurb, a blank cover and was only done in pictures I could STILL tell you within minutes that this is a Mary Calmes story!
I fell in love with her books the day I picked up A Matter Of Time and got involved in the long running, romance between endearing trouble magnet Jory Keyes/Harcourt and big gruff, "MINE" detective, Sam Kage and since then its a foregone conclusion that I have to have every book she gifts us with.
I'm a Calmes girl and I'm proud to say it!
So let's get to Floodgates and the members of the cast who make up this enjoyable story, and I've got to say like always I've just had the best time with Tracey and his tangled, convoluted love life, which in this case ends up putting him in more than a spot of bother and into the path of another gruff, possessive homicide cop, the hot, sexy "come to momma" Cord Nolan, and once again Tracey, who thinks he's just plain Mr Ordinary (with his deep brown, long, thick black lashed eyes and cheekbones to die for, LOL) is totally clueless about his appeal to all the guys in his life: The beautiful cheating ex boyfriend, who wants back in his life. The possibly dodgy, very protective Russian boss and business partner, who has you thinking there's much to him than meets the eye. The drop dead gorgeous brothers (one a famous actor and one a DEA agent) and the loving dad, each one of them willing to drop everything to have his back… and of course the close, really likeable BFF's, who form his little entourage, and their boyfriends/wives/girlfriends who love him to death!
Sound familiar? Well I suppose it is because let's be honest this is the 'Calmes formula' that keeps most of us coming back to Mary's books again and again, and you either love it or you don't. Simple as. Me? I adore it and even though there are times when even I find myself chuckling to myself at how the world, his wife, mother, kids and the dog, end up falling for the 'Joreyesque' character, I still can't help being glued to every page, thrilled by the sparking tension and chemistry between the two main MC's and the hot, sensual love scenes that she writes so well! And godammit, I fell just as much in love with Tracey as everyone in the book , because he's such a sweetie and so endearing. As for Cord... OMG! He's a hottie and a half. All Grrr and growl but still vulnerable in his need for Tracey to see him in a different light. He's been a player and Tracey can't see past that, despite the fact he's always had a deep down attraction for the big hunk, so you're feeling the magnetic push and pull between them right up until the moment when they finally give in and when they do....WHOOP!! Its hot! What more do you want in a sexually charged, love/hate, man on man romance? I was in my element.
To be fair, even though the Mary signatures are there, I don't think Tracey is quite as 'perfect' as a certain somebody so he does retain his own personality and I never thought of him as just another carbon copy. This was his story and it kept me feeling the loves!
Then there's the actual crime/mystery side of the plot. It was a bit OTT at times and I did have a few eye rolls, plus to be honest I guessed the bad guy as soon as he appeared on page but am I bovvered? Bovvered! Am I ? No I'm not... Because it was still fun, dramatic, entertaining, steamy, engaging and just plain enjoyable. I loved it and its another keeper for me. I was a bit disappointed though that we didn't get more of his Russian business partner Dimah. He wasn't featured as much as I thought but I'm thinking there's possibilities there for a story of his own and I'm pondering with the way it ended whether there's going to be a follow up with him and a certain Mr Gorgeous who seems straight, but who knows, this is Calmesworld so never say never!!! Or am I just projecting what I really want.... Hmmm?
Sooooo, final verdict...
Works for me so I say go forth Mary fans, indulge and buy! I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. I certainly wasn't.
