Reuben is a baker living in the slums of London, sharing a room with his father and an extended family of cockroaches. Poor, uneducated, and repressing all his sexual desires, he leads a life of misery, only sometimes sprinkled with gin and a rough tumble in a filthy back alley.
But when he is abducted into Bylondon to be the slave of a wealthy crime family member named Erik Dal, his values are put to the test. His new master is obsessed with all things equestrian, and Reuben soon learns that if he obeys and performs well as Erik's horse, he might just get everything he yearns for: pampering, foods he never even dreamed of, and shameless sex with a demonically handsome young man in leather riding boots.
As Copper, Erik's treasured dun stallion, Reuben must submit to his new master's obscene fancy of possessing another man completely. That is, if he yearns for treats and not the lick of a riding crop. Fake tails, harnesses, and a new haircut to his ginger mane help Reuben transform into Copper, but the fear of losing his dignity in the eyes of society might just prove to be a bigger restraint than any bit, bridle, or handcuffs.
All that for the small price of his freedom. Though at times, Reuben feels it's his soul that Erik is after instead.
How to Become a Pony in Ten Easy Steps
The book that introduced Kat and me to pony play was the second installment of the Sleeping Beauty series, written by Anne Rice as A. N. Roquelaure. It came up immediately upon the discovery that we both read the book, and we've been discussing the possibility of writing a pony-themed erotic short ever since. For me, there is just something incredibly appealing in a strong, beautiful man adopting the persona of a horse. It might be wild, or well-behaved, but whatever the personality, equines are animals I see as noble, elegant, and powerful. There are many kinds of pet play, and I enjoy reading many of those scenarios, but pony play has a special place in my heart.
The topic kept coming up in our brainstorming sessions until one of us basically said ‘screw it, why not just make it a novel?’ After all, even obscure fetishes don’t necessarily have to exclude plot. A brief survey of the market revealed that most of the pony play themed books available are single scene shorts, which doesn’t do justice to a topic so broad. Inspired, we chose to merge this new idea with an underdeveloped plotline we had on the backburner, and so The Copper Horse was born.
Pony play is a type of pet role play, which means that participants take on roles of equines and human handlers. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t necessarily have to involve a BDSM aspect, or even be sexual. It all depends on whether the person playing the role of the animal is interested in identifying with a horse, or whether they identify as a human playing the role of an equine. Sometimes, the scenes involve the sub being ‘forced’ into the role of a pony, which includes an element of humiliation. Handlers, too, can play various roles depending on the scene and preference: from grooms and trainers to veterinarians.
Human ponies can be trained in a variety of activities, but the basics are similar to training given to real horses. They are taught to follow simple commands, groomed, and learn gaits, but there are many possibilities. Ponyboys and ponygirls can learn dressage, circus tricks, western, and many other disciplines they might like. Additionally, they can identify with one or more types of ponies:
cart ponies - used to pull various kinds of carts, wagons and the like. Some prefer to work on their own, while others are part of teams that typically pull heavier types of carts, like in this example:
riding ponies - Four-legged ponies are ridden while on all fours, with the rider sitting on their back , while two-legged ponies carry the rider on their shoulders or in a special saddle designed for this kind of play
breeding ponies - used for breeding scenes with other ponies
pleasure ponies - in contrast to breeding ponies, this type has sexual contacts with partners who play human roles in the scene
bondage ponies - while most ponies are to some degree in bondage, this type tends to be heavily restricted in its movements
show ponies - trained to perform in shows and competitions. They can be trained in a variety of skills, from jumping to dressage
working ponies - just like real equines, working ponyboys and ponygirls pull heavy loads, remove obstacles from pathways, and are trained in overcoming obstacles in a difficult terrain.
Some ponies prefer one type of activity, while others try out different things. It all depends on the individual, but I suppose some might have a preference for disciplines that allow them to show off their dedication to performing certain skills (show ponies, dressage ponies), while others are more interested in the sexual aspect, and so on. Additionally, during scenes, both ponies and their human partners express themselves in a variety of ways. Horses might be wild, playful, affectionate etc., and depending on individual preferences they will like to be handled in various ways.
Each of the functions mentioned above requires specific accessories, but as with all role plays, pony play can be improvised with minimum equipment. Most of the tack is based on that used on bio-horses, the most basic being halters/bridles with bits, and reins. Additionally, the pony can dress in casual clothes, go naked, or wear a catsuit similar to the one in this video:
Visible in the footage are also pony boots (or hoof boots), a type of heel-less shoes designed to imitate the lower leg of an equine, as well as hoof-shaped mittens and a mask. The tail here is strapped to the hotpants, but in private, many ponies use a different variant. The tail can be also attached via butt plug. The possibilities are endless, and all depend on what the ponies and their partners enjoy.
In our book, the reader will get to know the world of pony play through the eyes of the main character, who doesn’t know anything about it, and he will go from a reluctant human forced into pony tack to someone who learns the benefits of being a pet. Animalization is one of the ways to let go of everyday problems, transcend one’s personality. In the case of impersonating a domesticated animal, it also involves giving up control. For someone like Reuben, the perspective of being cared for by someone powerful and kind is a major upgrade from the bleak life he’d led so far.
Erik, Reuben’s master, is obsessed with everything equine, so the training is quite diverse and addresses many aspects of equine role play, both sexual and not. And since it’s an erotic romance, we had lots of fun planning the scenes so that they work well with the non-erotic plot. Despite all the kink, The Copper Horse is essentially a love story, but also a story of Reuben’s transcendence, not only from a human’s persona to that of a pony, but also the transformation into a man who is not afraid to be who he is.
We are proud to present Copper, the dun stallion.

K.A. Merikan is a joint project of Kat and Agnes Merikan, who jokingly claim to share one mind. They finish each other's sentences and simultaneously come up with the same ideas. Kat and Agnes enjoy writing various kinds of stories, from light-hearted romance to thrillers. They love creating characters that are not easy to classify as good or evil, and firmly believe that even some villains deserve their happy endings. It is easiest to find them in galleries, good restaurants and historical sites, always with a computer or notebook, because for Kat and Agnes, every day is writing day. Future plans include lots of travel and a villa on the coast of Italy or a flat in Paris where they could retire after yet another crazy venture, only to write more hot homoerotic stories.
Kat and Agnes started as popular authors of online serials written in their native language, but are now focused on reaching a wider readership by writing in English. As K.A. Merikan, they have published a number of books, which cross genres while always staying homoerotic.
