Exclusive Excerpt from Market Garden #8

Nope, it doesn’t even have a title yet! This is a tiny little sneak peek at what we’re working on right now. Please note this is from an unedited work-in-progress.

Rahil, a friend of Mike and Geoff’s, is a bit of a paintball prodigy, and has joined the guys for some of their naughty games on the field. Frank’s brought some of his rentboys to play too…including the gorgeous Zach. The first time we saw Zach, he approached Spencer in If It Flies, and he’s had Rahil tripping over his own feet since the first time they played.

As those of you who’ve read Capture & Surrender probably remember, this is a winner take all brand of paintball. You capture someone on the field, he’s yours. All yours.

We now go live to the paintball field where Rahil is on the hunt…

Excerpt

Rahil peered out from behind the bunker, trying to work out where the next attackers were coming from. Nothing from the front. He thought he saw a moving camo to the left, where the trees stood pretty dense. There was a lot of dead wood there, and part of a trench, so he could easily outflank whoever was trying to outflank him from there. A quick, habitual check told him the hopper was still full, so he left his cover and ran in a low crouch towards cover.

A couple balls of paint zipped past him, so he dropped flat on his stomach behind another fallen tree and squeezed off some bullets just as the enemy was leaning out of cover. A muffled pained curse told him he’d hit, although the other player seemed very reluctant to acknowledge it openly. Several seconds passed. Then, finally, “I’m out.” The player who stepped out of cover with his marker raised was none other than Chris, that cocky son of a bitch everyone got a kick out of shooting. Rahil always got a little thrill out of adding a Chris-shaped notch to his barrel.

He used the pause to roll to the side and slide into the trench that was running along the side of the field. The trench was empty and offered him a lot of protection, so he ran along for about fifteen yards or so and climbed out at the end of it, ending up on his knees in the protection of another piece of plywood cover.

Yes, there was definitely one player trying to flank him from the very edge of the field. Rahil peered along the field. And that player came without backup, too. There was nobody in sight on that line at all. So he made his way behind the trees and covers, moving slowly and carefully. The bulk of the enemy was either trying to get through on the other side or tried to protect the flag, but a stray or two might still be dangerous.

He circled around the other player who was now flat on his stomach behind a bunker, squeezing off the occasional round likely when he thought he saw something. For the hell of it, Rahil picked up a stone and threw it to the side.

The player quickly adjusted his position and leaned out of cover to investigate the noise.

Enough time to cross the distance.

He extended the marker and touched the other player on the hip. “Captured.”

The other player almost jumped out of his skin, and when the man cursed, Rahil almost jumped out of his. That voice. Oh fuck.

Staying low to avoid a stray paintball, his “prisoner” turned around, and Rahil’s throat tightened as he met Zach’s gorgeous eyes through his visor.

Though the lower half of Zach’s face was hidden behind the mask’s grill, Rahil swore he could feel the grin that narrowed the man’s eyes. “Well.” He leaned back against the bunker and rested his weapon across his lap. “You have me. What’re you going to do with me?”

Uh. Yeah. About that . . .

About L.A. Witt

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.

L. A.’s backlist is available on her website, and updates (as well as random thoughts and the odd snarky comment) can be found on her blog or on Twitter (@GallagherWitt).
