Every dreary day, Zach Driscoll takes the elevator from the penthouse apartment of his father's building to his coldly charmed life where being a union lawyer instead of a corporate lawyer is an act of rebellion. Every day, that is, until the day the elevator breaks and Sean Mallory practically runs into his arms.
Substitute teacher Sean Mallory is everything Zach is not—poor, happy, and goofily charming. With a disarming smile and a penchant for drama, Sean laughs his way into Zach's heart one elevator ride at a time. Zach would love to get to know Sean better, but first he needs the courage to leave his ivory tower and face a relationship that doesn't end at the "Ding!"
Zach Driscoll is the Prince in the shiny tower… he may have all the trappings of wealth and the privileged family upbringing, and as a lawyer he was doing well, establishing his own practice… but Zach was so incredibly lonely leading a solitary existence, hiding his sexuality and any personality he might have behind a persona that was expected of him, one that has been ingrained since childhood by the two people in his life that should by rights have showed him how to love and be loved, because poor Zach hasn’t got a clue!
All the money in the world will not make you happy and for socially awkward Zach, so regressed in his own world dictated by a sense of responsibility and propriety, this is true... You get a feeling of profound sadness from Zach, a despondency and dejection that unless you are made of steel will hurt!!! Because Zach has a huge heart, it’s like an untapped well just waiting to be discovered, he may initially comes across as formal, staid, lacking confidence in the “real” world but the real Zach, wants just that, he wants “real” a real love, a real friendship and a real life to go with it.
It was raining, and in the cutting silver light from the galleria, the rain looked like slivers of crystal. Like wishing stars.
I wish a prince would rescue me, he thought, half in whimsy and half in despair. Silly wish, right?
And wishes do come true… well, in stories anyway, and this is such a heart warming contemporary fairy tale romance because he may not be a Prince, but Zach’s wish and his lessons in love come in the guise of Mr Cowboy Substitute Teacher, aka Sean, a man he meets in the lift on his way to work, a man who has no permanent job, little money, is living in an apartment with five others, yet he is happy… with the bluest eyes Zach has ever seen and his bright smile… dazzling! Sean just fascinates him and becomes the highlight of his day… and everyday that he manages to get a glimpse of Sean.
From floor fourteen to floor one, he had a relationship with someone funny, quirky, kind, smart, and surprising.
Zach has no idea how to have a relationship, the whole concept is alien to him, the only way he gets any bedroom action is via an escort agency, cold and clinical, a perfunctory release and less than satisfying. So watching him come alive and go against his parents, shaking off those shackles that had imprisoned him in that tower was a heart warming experience. Sean was so cute, sweet and adorable, I just wanted to smush him.. he animated Zach and gently coaxed the real man from where he had laid dormant. Sean became his teacher in all things loving and through Sean he saw the world in a whole new light, aided and abetted by Leah and Jenn… two secondary characters who were the most unlikely friends for Zach, and had me in a fit of giggles... Loved them!!!
“I need a gesture.”
Leah grinned. “A romantic gesture?”
Zach smiled quietly back. “Yeah!”
Jenn rolled her eyes. “I would be more impressed if you showed up at his place with a condom and said, ‘I’m sick of this shit with the elevators already.’”
Leah shook her head. “No. Jenn, hon, he wants something that lasts longer than it takes for the jizz to cool.”
Zach was such a lost soul trying to discover himself and my heart was crushed at his awe and wonderment that anyone would actually like him and want to be his friend, and watching him grow with just a few minutes each day, filling him with hope and love in the shape of Sean… well, I was fit to burst with the happiness I felt. Going Up is a feel good romance which takes baby steps, as Zach has no idea what he’s doing… but both he and Sean had me cheering all the way to the end as Zach pushed at the confines of his life to go for what he wanted, with Sean so endearing, and patiently waiting for Zach to get past his shyness and uncertainty… eventually giving him a nudge in the right direction, all resulting in a perfect fairy tale… happily ever after.
I just want to applaud Amy Lane and I am happy to sit here like an over excited seal doing it because I loved this book and the feelings she evokes with her writing is just truly amazing! Another winner from Ms Lane and highly recommended!
