beneaththisman
After the dramatic and devastating conclusion to This Man, we’ve all been biting our nails desperately waiting for more Jesse & Ava and we’re so very delighted to tell you that it was most definitely worth waiting for!!

The Blurb

She knew she was heading towards disaster. Every instinct told her to run, but Jesse Ward was a hard man to escape.

It has been five days’ since Ava O’Shea left Jesse drunk and raging at Lusso – left behind a man who drowned her in his intensity and blindsided her with his touch. Getting over this man was never going to be easy. And now he’s back in her life.

She has questions she needs answering, but her determination to get these answers will give the pleasure-seeking playboy the power to destroy her again. She needs to keep her eyes wide open and caution at the forefront of her mind, an ambitious intention when Jesse Ward is within touching distance. And he plans to be.

He’s dark, he’s broken – Ava knows this, but the only way to find out how dark and how broken is to get beneath the steely exterior of this man.

Here’s a little teaser quote just to get you all EVEN more excited for the release!!

Interview with Jodi Ellen Malpas

This Man left us with so many questions and left us desperate for more so we managed to convince Jodi to sit down with us and give us a few answers.  These questions were asked after we read This Man and before we read Beneath This Man.

SSBR: This Man has been a regular in Amazon’s erotica top 10 since its release. How has the reception been compared to what you expected and how different does it feel releasing Beneath This Man now that there so many people are eagerly anticipating it. Sorry Jodi!! No pressure or anything!!

Jodi: Straight answer? I’m ridiculously nervous. In October when I published This Man, no one knew me. There were no expectations or anticipation and no pressure. How I’m feeling right now, though, is making up for that! I could never have imagined the response This Man has received. It’s exciting, but daunting. The enthusiasm is incredible, and I hope it remains with the following novels in the This Man Trilogy. I think…will people love Beneath as much as This Man? Personally, I love it more, but it’s a matter of opinion. There are so many ways the story can go, so I’m aware that not everyone will be happy with where it does actually lead. But, you can’t please all of the people all of the time, even though I would love to. I sent the story in the direction that I really thought it should go.

SSBR: We love Beneath even more too!  How did the idea for the This Man trilogy first come about? Was it like an epiphany or a hazy picture that slowly started to come into focus?

Jodi: It was hazy for a few years, but then it just kind of landed in my brain. It was never meant to be a trilogy, but I got halfway through This Man and quickly realised that I was never going to fit it all in, so Beneath This Man began and after careful consideration, I decided that Jesse and Ava needed a third book. I had two lists when I started the This Man project. My 'A list' (Achievement list) and my 'X list' (Avoid list). An item on my 'A list' was to achieve a beefy novel, something for women to really get their teeth into. I wanted room to flesh out the characters so the reader could connect with them, but a late addition to my 'X list' was the important item of not 'beefing up' the read just to make it a Trilogy. Jesse and Ava need this time, though. They deserve it and so does the reader. I hope my readers feel the same way :-)

SSBR: Oh, I think we all do!! Ava’s a regular girl about town, working the 9-5 in London. How much of you is in her character and are some of her experiences based on your own?

Jodi: I’ve been asked this before…many times. When reading books like This Man, women get really wrapped up in the hero, of course, but I wanted a heroine that women would love too. I’ve had many emails and messages saying how much people love Ava. She's strong-minded, independent and sensible – except when it comes to Jesse. He is her only weakness. But what woman isn’t weak when it comes to a man who captures their attention, especially one like Jesse Ward. I’m a strong-minded girl, I’m sensible and I’m independent, so yes, I guess I am a little like Ava.

SSBR: In reviews for This Man, I saw a lot of references to Britishisms. As a Brit myself, I hardly noticed them, but do you find that there are challenges and difficulties being a British author in a mostly American dominated genre?

Jodi: I don’t think you could call it a challenge. Perhaps my US friends find a few words and phrases unfamiliar, but I don’t think a few pairs of knickers, the odd jumper or some British terms and slang detract from the fact that it is, essentially, a tale of intense feelings and love. This Man is a British story of love, yes, but love is a universal language. Everyone gets it.

SSBR: Absolutely, we completely agree. We’re all desperate to get Beneath Jesse in more ways than one! Are we going to find out how old he is and how he got that scar and why he is so secretive?

Jodi: No comment!

SSBR: LOL – guess we’re all just going to have to read the book to get those answers!! We know that this is a trilogy. What can you tell us about the third book? When is it likely to get a release and what will it be called?

Jodi: Book #3 will be released in Spring-ish. I’m deliberating on two titles at the moment, and I really cannot make my mind up.

Jodi has since announced that the third book will be called This Man Confessed.

SSBR: So we know that This Man was your first published novel. Have you been writing for long and are there old, unpublished stories out there that might get a revamp now?

Jodi: No. Short answer! I probably could’ve written 6 other novels in the time I was trying to work out where This Man was going, but I was determined to get there with Jesse. I wanted to break the predictable and have my readers wondering where things were heading. I hope I’ve achieved this.

This Man is my first – nothing before, but heaps to come after.

SSBR: That’s so good to hear.  We can’t wait for more! There are plenty of great secondary characters in the books. Do you plan on writing further stories with them as central characters?

Jodi: I don’t think I could. Everyone loves Sam and Kate, but if I write a story on those two, I’ll be making Jesse and Ava secondary characters and I could never bring myself to do that.

SSBR: They’re definitely never going to be secondary characters, that’s for sure!  Can you tell us what your influences are? Which authors that you’ve read have had the biggest impact on your writing style and story ideas?

Jodi: No authors have had an impact on my writing style. I write, that’s it! My influences are women who love this genre – who love to get swept up in the intensity of love. Since publishing This Man, I’ve learned that reading is an escape for many women, whether it is from work, motherly duties or just life in general, and it fills me with immense pleasure to know that my story telling can do this for someone. I write for them and for my own love of being consumed by the characters I’ve created. As an author, there is nothing better than having someone sending you a ‘Thank you’ message.

SSBR: Oh, we sure did get swept up in the intensity!  Tell us a secret!

Jodi: A secret? I can’t possibly give anything away about Jesse and Ava! All of the secrets are reserved for Beneath and Book#3. And I personally have no secrets. Do any authors actually answer this question?!! Oh! I just thought of one…A few days ago, I had complete clarity on my first standalone novel. The journal came out and I mapped it all out on paper. I need to finish book #3 of the This Man Trilogy before I can dive into that, though.

SSBR: Who is your current favourite author and which books did you enjoy reading the most last year and which ones are you most looking forward to in 2013.

Jodi: I’ve missed out on so much reading because I was so consumed with This Man. I couldn’t think of anything else, although I made time for Lover Reborn. I LOVE JR Ward and cannot wait for Lover at Last. My TBR list is ridiculous. I’m looking forward to Reckless by S.C Stephens, too. This has all happened so quickly, I’ve not had a chance to catch my breath, but once Beneath is out there, I need to get some structure back in my life, and part of this structure will be dedicated reading time. I really miss it.

SSBR: Thanks Jodi.  It’s been a real pleasure chatting with you.

Our Review

I want the woman with me who keeps my heart beating.

Wow!  Just Wow!

beneath this man quote

Before you read my review, please just open Massive Attack’s Angel in a new window and play it in the background as you read.  This song features frequently during the book and is Jesse’s song for Ava.  Play it LOUD!

This has to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2013. After the last desperate and devastating few chapters of This Man, we’ve all been waiting with bated breath for more Jesse & Ava.  The second book of a trilogy is traditionally the weakest, it’s neither a beginning or an end and can often be just filler but that is NOT the case here.  This book just blew me away, I DEVOURED it and I am now bereft that it is over and can’t wait for the third book to be able to finally conclude this intense and overwhelming romance.

We left Jesse & Ava in the depths of despair at the end of This Man.  Both of them are broken by what has happened and their relationship is seemingly in ruins.  They’re both in pieces and wrecked and, Jesse especially, hell-bent on self-destruction.  This was done so very well – their broken hearts and intense overwhelming sadness leap vividly to life right off the page and their despair is palpable.  They’re just lost without each other.

As they move beyond these events and attempt to get their relationship back on track I couldn’t help feel that their connection was one of the most intense and most emotional that I think I’ve ever read in romantic fiction.  I so wanted them to sort out their differences, to be open and honest with each other and to find that Happy Ever After that’s constantly drifting ever so slightly out of reach.  I read with a big grin, loving every minute that they were together and then again always with that ever-present worry that Jodi Ellen Malpas was going to rip the rug out from under us with some unforeseen complication and plummet them back down into the darkness.  It’s a story of unbelievably wonderful highs followed by despondent lows.

Jesse is back in all his arrogant, alpha, dominant controlling glory with sleepy sex, sense fucks, reminder fucks and now even retribution fucks.  The steam factor in this book is off the charts HAWT!!

The normally strong dominant playboy has been reduced to a frightened desperate soul by the intensity and depth of his feelings for Ava.  He’s lived a hedonistic lifestyle until the moment he met her, he’s never cared for the multitude of women that he’s had physical relationships with and was fairly self-destructive not caring whether he lived or died.  Now Ava has burst onto his horizon and he can hardly see straight, he loves her so much.  He’s terrified that he’s going to lose her, that someone will take her from him and she brings out all his extremely over-protective instincts.  He’s a troublesome, neurotic rogue and there were times that I wanted to scream at him, bang his head against a brick wall to knock some sense into him – he made me crazy.  Ava too.  I was just rooting for them to find a happy balance – an equilibrium that would ultimately ease their troubled souls but they’re so deeply connected to one another, body and soul, they have the power to absolutely destroy one other.

Ava continues to be a wonderful heroine that you can truly believe in.  She’s as overwhelmed as Jesse by her feelings and is completely bowled over by him.  She’s a feisty soul and despite Jesse’s dominant presence manages to win some of their battles.  She’s strong and independent and doesn’t take well to Jesse trying to micro-manage her life to the nth degree and it makes for a tortuous path as they argue and dispute every little aspect of their life together only to make up with seriously hot off the charts steamy bedroom action!  Ava feels a connection to Jesse that she has never felt with anyone ever before and he makes her ecstatically happy and allows her to feel safe at the same time as driving her totally barking mad.

Beneath This Man is a beautiful, captivating, conflicting, tortuous romance that had me completely consumed by their story.  I was totally absorbed by the words on the page, everything else just faded into the background as I lost myself absolutely in their fictional world, falling more and more in love with Jesse with every chapter.  There’s just something so open and engaging about what is passing between them.  It’s also funny as we get to see the little quirks of character from This Man building and growing giving you the reader a feeling that you’re getting to know this central duo so very well.  They feel like friends.  There’s also a great host of secondary characters with poor Clive, the much abused concierge at Lusso, John an absolute pillar of strength at The Manor and Kate and Sam and all of Ava’s riotous friends and colleagues.

As I was lucky enough to be one of the earliest to read this, I got asked over and over the same questions – how old is Jesse, how did he get that scar, did he sleep with Sarah, and more.  All I can say is – you’re just going to have to read the book.  I know you’re all desperate to know but you don’t really want me to tell you. You’ll want to experience it for yourself just the way the author intended.
So, this was my first 5 star read of 2013 and an absolutely stunning continuation of the This Man trilogy and I can’t wait to get my hands on book 3.  If you liked This Man, you’re going to absolutely love Beneath This Man.  If you enjoy your romance on the angsty, emotional and intense side then this book is most definitely for you.

5 stars super steamy and very special erotic romance

  72. Will Beneath This Man be available via ebook from amazon? I tried to pre-order it but could not locate it, HELP!

    1. It will be but Jodi is a self-published author and they don't get pre-order links. The book's only there when it's actually live. Not long now.

  74. I would like to say that I am very much excited that the 11th will be here soon. :) I am seriously thinking about taking the day off so I can enjoy the book. I am sure that I will be reading the book a few times over the weekend. You guys asked for someone who could play Jesse. Well honestly, I have no clue. I did see a few names listed but the only one I could see as Jesse with would be Alexander Skarsgard.

Oh also I would like to say that I loved that the book was written in "British-ism" ;)

  76. Eeps!! Love the interview and I can't wait for Beneath This Man!! I see a lot of favs above such as Ryan Gosling, Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill and I agree these are all great choices!! But today I feel like rooting for the underdog and he is none other than... English actor... holy hotness... Kit Harington!! Who is he? Perhaps you'll remember him as Jon Snow from the HBO series Game of Thrones. Oh, he's my perfect Jesse Ward *swoons* Love me some Jesse please? I'm having withdrawal symptoms and I need answers too!! Thanks SSBR and Jodi for the amazing interview and giveaway!! ;)

  78. First off I want to say how kick ass This Man was, being from US I thought maybe I would have trouble with it, I have read some books from UK authors and not understood everything. BUT NOPE. I read through it in a day which sucked cause I wanted the second book then.. Either way, Henry Cavill would make me quiver in my panties as Jesse.. I also really really love Sam Witwer from Being Human (US version) although his eyes are dark as sin, he is smoking hot. I am uber excited for Beneath this Man!!! So glad its almost finally here!!

  86. Loved this trilogy, couldn't put any of the books down, found myself laughing one minute and crying the next. Jodi Ellen Malpas has written an exceptional story and never seen how the story would continually through in another heart stopping moment. I just dare anyone to read these books and tell me that they didn't have a lump in their throat with this story.
